Deck Description

Starter Budget -series is variation of my famous(?) Budget Decks -series.
In this series, I attempt to create decks that go great for starters:
They do not have extremely valuable or complicated cards. Most of them are simple commons and uncommons.
Though, this doesn't mean that these decks aren't threat. In right hands (and with some practice, of course,) they can overwhelm very tough opponents.
These decks are meant for those who have just dived into the mysterious depths of Magic: The Gathering, or to those people who like simple and cheap decks. Or to just anyone!
Budget is meant to be low! (Less than 15 bucks.)

So cheap, so simple, so much fun.

(Remember: If you are new player, do not be afraid to ask if you have questions. Northy has always time for newbies!)

How to Play

This deck attempts to teach new players the main points of playing a soldier deck.
Get a group of soldiers, hold your opponent down with spells and buff up effects, then go in for kill and win the game. To perform these steps, the player must handle the cards of this deck. Luckily they do not bear too complicated abilities.

Players playing this deck MUST understand at least four keywords: vigilance, first strike, flying and hexproof.

-Flying is a keyword that allows creatures to be "unblockable" by all others except those with flying or reach. Flying is a handy ability to deal some free damage through.

-Vigilance means that the creature won't tap when it attacks. This means that it can BOTH attack and block.

-First strike allows you creatures to deal their combat damage before creatures without first strike. This allows them to be efficient against same sized creatures, since if a creature with first strike kills another creature with its attack, the creature killed this way won't have a chance to attack back.

-Last but not least is hexproof. Hexproof is an extremely handy keyword, since it makes your opponents unable to cast spells or activate abilities that target the creature with hexproof. Though cards that do not target like "Destroy all creatures" still destroy creatures with hexproof.

Deck discussion for Starter Budget: Soldier Boyz

Paragon of New Dawns is a little expensive cmc wise but it would fit well here, you could swap out Rhox Pikemaster for Archetype of Courage. Aegis of the Gods might be a cheaper alternative for Aven Fleetwing if you are pushing to teach the fundamentals of Hexproof. The deck cost on this deck is pretty low so you have a lot of room to work. I think this deck could be a lot of fun. I'd also recommend Sejiri Merfolk. I would try to fit at least 3 in this deck. Plus I love Soldiers. they are my favorite tribal. If you weren't pushing for certain abilities I would say that ANY Soldier deck needs to be running a set of Boros Elite. they are insurmountable in a Soldier Deck But I can see the premise of this deck and I think it's great. None the less. Kudo's on a fun deck.

How about I create a mighty sideboard for those who are a bit more skilled starters?

Thank you for your compliment.
: )

And my brother would so totally agree with you about the soldier tribal... He started playing with soldiers, and even now it is still his best deck. Some golden memories with that tribal. My archnemesis tribal.
*chuckles*

Oh I'm right there with you. I made a "Throwback Thursday" Deck on here that's a replica of the Soldier deck I used to play before I quit. Which was right around mirrodin Cycle. As soon as I got back into magic and knew I really wanted to start playing again, did some research on all the stuff I missed I build an updated Soldier Deck. and It is by far my favorite. I'm always tweaking it, But I have it to a point where I'm really enjoying it and can pull off a turn 4 kill. it's called Honor of the Legion. Soldiers are just so versatile, one of the most vertatile Tribal in my opinion. Granted they are mostly white but you can splash any color into them. Mine is W/R with Assemble the Legion and Spark Trooper. but you could go B/W human soldiers and throw in Xathrid Necromancer for fun. You can go W/G tokens with Sigil Captain. Something like this http://www.mtgvault.com/horizonblue/decks/gw-swarn-2/ . It's not Soldiers solely but it looks damn fun. I think you personally could make that deck cheaper and just as fun. cut the expensive dual land, Hornets nest, Push hooded Hydra back to two. cut Launch the Fleet. and you could get it under $20. Anywho. I'm ranting. time to get back to work.

Why don't you put in soldier of the pantheon instead of elite vangaurd?

First of all, I'm trying to be as cheap as possible.
Second of all, I'm trying to be as simple as possible.
