Deck Description

Hello there people. I was wondering about the price of modern decks these days, so here's a budget "zoo" deck.
Slower than original zoo decks, but really cheap (You can buy it for around 25$) and cute. :3

Deck discussion for Budget Bestiary

I like the idea, but your missing tarmogoyf, which is a key creature for these decks (...and $600 obviously,I know your making a budget) but thats's one slow down. Also these decks rely on getting forest, plains, and mountains out early so the creatures are big very quick. You do have fetch lands, but they can't grab the lands that have (mountain forest) like stomping ground does, and temple garden (forest plain). This makes the deck even slower. Without testing it, I would assume that it "breaks" the deck. Meaning it won't work. I like the idea of trying though. To me there are other tournament decks that you could go budget on that would be more effective, like a boggle deck.

Perhaps you missed the word "Budget" in the title. Maybe you only worry about competitive Magic, but there are casual decks which are fun to play which don't run 4x goyf and no fetch lands whose purpose is merely 'fun to play.'

Now, in the realms of budget, I think he'd want to play something like Rancor. Just keep in mind that if the gentleman is making a budget deck, it's not really a consideration to run goyfs and shocks. $75 is usually a budget Modern deck, so try not to suggest anything that would break that cap and don't hate on the fact that deck chooses not to do so.

No I know its a budget deck hence the (...and $600 obviously,I know your making a budget) I'm not hating on the deck, and I totally get the fun/non competitive part. It just seems like the loss of the mechanic really harms this deck was all I was saying. I think some temple gardens or stomping grounds would really help. And at about $9 a piece doesn't really shatter a budget.

Goyf is not actually necessary to run a Zoo deck, Fetches are, which is an issue that is sort of addressed by the evolving wilds cards.

as for the actual deck, Steppe Lynx should be in the main board, Pridemage in the side. Lynx allows for super explosive starts, such as T1 Plains, Lynx, T2 Evolving wilds, trigger lynx, crack wilds for mountain, trigger Lynx, swing 4. even better is the turn 3 8, same scenario, but with a ghor clan on top

interesting idea, and this is one of the few decks that can actually still be competetive with a budget, because of the value cards. some Shock lands would really help, though.

I think George is making a fair point saying that the lack of fetches (more important, imo) and Goyf slow the deck down so much that it's "broken". I don't think he meant it to stifle creativity, it's just an observation that making it budget slows the deck down so much (from what I can see, an average 1-2 turns in the first 3 turns alone, in comparison to the "real" deck) that the archetype isn't really worth pursuing as budget.

That being said, I don't play modern, so all I can see is any turn 3 board clear messing up your day, and while your build is great and all, it just doesn't do enough damage by that time to justify the overextension that you would need to do. But maybe noone plays slagstorm (or similar) in modern? Dauntless Escort might be something for that, if it's something you have trouble.

I dont know how to follow up those big comments but I think that this would be a lot of fun to play and very easy for somebody who might not even be able to afford shock lands, to get this deck built.

I think if you put knight of the reliquary and lightning helix would be better rather than Ghor-Clan Rampager and searing spear.

Lightning helix over searing spear also chained to rocks over oblivion ring

Tectonic Edge and Ghost Quarter are both played heavily in Modern. Chained is a bad 3 for 1. O ring is tougher to deal with.

It is all good in my book. I´ve built something similar in the past, and if you´re worried about the dual prices, then I´d highly recommend 'Lush Growth' for the Puss Puss =) a turn two 3/3 is not bad ~_^

if your casual group allows proxies, you may wanna include the fetches just in case. Otherwise, very fast and nice.
I love budget decks, being a poor student and all- can you check out my Elves deck, please?

There are some things I hate and some things I love. I do not really like budget decks but this one, this one I do kinda of love... in a kinky, zoolike your wild loxodon lynx brings all the animals to the yard way. This is deffinently one of the best decks I've seen in the budget category ever.

My only thought would be to add a few vines of vastwood or phytobursts in to hit them REALLY hard round 2.

Heydood. I believe in budget decks. I also believe Aether Vial is a fragment of the one true god, not that bearded chump who grants wishes.
They're ten bucks now, son. Screw Goyf - THAT is how this deck explodes out of the gate.

Nice comment! xD
Aether Vial surely is perfect for these kinds of decks.... but, this deck in particular is destined to new players and those who really can't/don't want afford *more expensive* cards. ^^

Butforyou... I'm assuming you have a flesh copy of the deck. The landfall and thinning in here alongside the PURE onedrop creature base, this thing would explode with 4x Vial.
