Deck discussion for Fish!

Maybe a few suggestions?

Cold-Eyed Selkie
Lullmage Mentor
Merfolk Sovereign
Merrow Harbinger
Reef Shaman
Riptide Pilferer
Stonybrook Banneret
True-Name Nemesis
Bident of Thassa
Merrow Commerce

Cold eyed is to weak for 3 mana, lullmage is not what this deck wants, sovereign is alright but to many 3 drops if I put it in, bident is to expensive, merrow commerce slows the deck down, true name and reef shaman aren't modern, the others don't fit well. Maybe riptide pilferer, but idk yet.

Cold-Eye Selkie: 1/1 for 3 mana. Not good enough.
Lullmage Mentor: ability is too late-game
Merfolk Sovereign: A bad Lord of Atlantis or Master of the Pearl Trident
Merrow Harbinger: Steals your draw, a 2/3 for 4 mana
Reef Shaman: Not Modern and not as good as Spreading Seas or Aquitect's Will
Riptide Pilferer: ~ Sub-par
Stonybrook Banneret: Is really only going cheapen Merrow Reejerey
True-Name Nemesis: Not Modern Legal
Bident: Really expensive for very little value.
Merrow Commerce: Now we're talking! The question is what to take out . . .

I'd replace Thassa with Stormtide Leviathan

I was gonna suggest that as well, but it's so big. Such late game.

Yep. I had a merfolk deck. Pretty much stalled the game for a long time before able to get Leviathan. Then just hit with all unblockable merfolks

Not playing for late game, it's more of an aggro deck.

It's actually not good in this deck. Maybe if he was playing something absurdly big like stormtide leviathan (dont, its bad), but with such a low curve there is no reason to use it.

yea, no reason to use it

May I suggest using Spreading Seas instead of Aquitect's Will ? It makes the land an island and only an Island - potentially setting three colour decks or those which are 'greedy' with mana back a turn or two - and it is also a guaranteed draw a card too :) And also... where's Mutavault dude !!/!???!

Here is my modern fish list :) http://www.mtgvault.com/buzzgsc/decks/modern-merfolk/

Didn't realize that it left the other land types. Also, mutavault puts too much pressure on the land base.

But when you're either hitting one of 15 islands or an aether vial (which reduces pressure on the mana base) the mutavaults become more than playable

Id put some Tidebinder Mage sideboard. Tapping a Tarmogoyf or Deathrite Shaman.
Coralhelm Commander looks a little slow. I think, more Phantasmal Image would be better. Copying a real lord for 2 is better than paying 6 for a 4/4 lord.

Definitely agree but the fact the Commander can gain flying can be extremely relevant so it's best to keep them no more than a two of. I would probably just swap the third for a fourth Cursecatcher.

I've got to agree with Lucy93, although I'd probably put Tidebinder in the sideboard, if anything. As for Commander, he truly is too slow, and all he does is eat a removal spell the moment you dump mana into him, making him extremely inefficient.

But again with the aether vial you can drop him in and allow for mana to either 1) pump him up or 2) drop a merfolk in addition to the commander - you've got to remember after you drop him with aether vial he becomes a 3/3 flyer for 2 mana which grows with lords ! There are decks which will only run lightning bolts as removal in modern, so a 4/4 flyer on board is extremely relevant, and if he does draw a removal spell then thats one more lord for you!

He has his upsides, yes. I'm just telling you, as someone with a lot of experience with the deck, that he is often underwhelming, and the slot could be used for more potent cards.

in my testing, i almost never pump mana into commander, i just play him as a bear and use him as a beater after some lords are out.

I've been playing merfolk for a while and I have a few suggestions (you can look at my modern fish list here: http://www.mtgvault.com/raginggoblin/decks/merfolk-3/)

Anyway, I'd try this:
-Coralhelm Commander is honestly too slow, trust me.
-Add ~2 Cavern of souls, even with vial there are times when you want to cast your fish, and UWx control is already a rough matchup for fish.
-Mutavault is a must, if you're worried about too many colorless lands then only use 3. But definitely use some.
-Kira, Great Glass-spinner is a great 2-of for mainboard, you can also use spellskite (and whichever you don't use put in the sideboard).
-It may be understood from the lands I'm telling you to add, but go up to 20 lands.

Otherwise it looks fine. Good luck!

Coat of Arms would work nicely

Coat of Arms has always been a trap of a card. At first it seems like it could be great, but in the end it is extremely slow, and doesn't really help you win much faster (great example of a "win more" card).

That said, CoA is still a fun card to play in casual tribal decks, something silly like tribal Bears may use it. Overall it's pretty weak though.

All i'm going to say is .... mirror match...

0

The key to the Merfolk mirror match is to either board out, or save, your Lord of Atlantis.

I'd disagree. I've never been one to use it, but I've seen it finish games on far too many occasions for it to be considered a trap.

Thinking of switching out the Coralhelm Commanders with Cosi's Tricksters. Thoughts?

0
Posted 23 January 2014 at 00:18

cosi's tricksters just seem a bit too unreliable. sure it can work well sometimes but even against a lot of decks the ability may only go off 2 maybe 3 times. there aren't too many shuffle abilities other than ghost quarter, fetch lands, PtE, and ... I can't even think of any others

you should switch the commanders for inkfathom infiltrators and a sygg river cutthroat. maybe 1 sygg and 2 inkfathom?

-1
Posted 27 January 2014 at 09:02

Cosi's Trickster is actually super reliable. Against every single tier deck you are going to get a ~3/3 for 1 mana. You what that is? It's called Wild Nacatl. And it's banned.

Also, inkfathom is pretty trash, though a couple Sygg's have had success in fish.

There's plenty of aggression already in the list, I think what's best right now is to cut the Commanders, add one more land and 2 Kira, great glass-spinner, or 2 Spellskite.
