Deck Description

My inspiration for this deck was first and foremost: Mortician Beetle. Having a creature on the board that gets +1/+1 every time ANY player sacrifices a creature is huge in a deck with heavy amounts of removal that force sacrifices. I've also been working on a Legacy version of this deck that includes Carrion Feeder, Diabolic Edict, and as an alt win con, Life Drain. My local meta is really creature heavy and I'm hoping to run this in the coming weeks to see how it does. I know that this deck needs a diversity of win cons. As it stands right now it's a slow painful grind, unless Desecration Demon drops.

Maybe Board: Ob Nixilis - Unshackled, Fleshbag Marauder, Death Cultist, It That Betrays, Konti - Death's Vindicator, Sheoldred - Whispering One, Thought-Knot Seer, Reality Smasher, Drana - Liberator of Malakir, Fatal Push, Yahenni - Undying Partisan, Rite of Consumption.

New Card (Ravnica Allegiance): Priest of Forgotten Gods. Orzhov Enforcer. Considering splashing white for new Afterlife ability.

Edit (05/31/2019): In preparation for Modern Horizons, I'm updating this list again, mainly because two of the cards that were originally in this deck are being printed into modern (Carrion Feeder, Diabolic Edict) and another card is coming back too, Unearth! The only thing in this deck that Unearth doesn't hit is Desecration Demon. With these 3 cards I think this deck can really compete! Also considering Cabal Therapist and Feaster of Fools in this deck as well.

How to Play

As of now, only played this casually. Not sure how it will do competitively. Plan to play it at local Modern match up in the coming weeks and make notes of the pros and cons.
First Test Results: 0 - 4 (with buy) in first Modern match up. (Lost to Black/Blue 'Living End' deck, Lost to Delver Burn, Lost to Lantern).

Deck discussion for Mono Black Sac (Modern)

This deck seems fun! I don't know how it would perform in a competitive environment, but I do have a suggestion: Smallpox. It's proven good in modern 8-Rack before and is in general a great value card, especially in a deck like yours.

Smallpox wasn't even a consideration, but now I'm thinking it could be a great way to control the board. I've run up against it tons of times in modern and had forgotten it had the sac ability in there. Cheers!

I like the idea. There are some cards that you could consider that I noticed weren't in your maybe list:

Grave Pact (absolute house, and 3 black isn't a problem)
Skirsdag High Priest (would help solve the deck speed problem)
Bitterblossom (also helps with speed, and gives you fodder for marauder if you want to keep him. Unless you want to keep the deck budget...)

I would probably go with more of an attrition strategy, running cards like innocent blood instead of vile rebirth. Bitterblossom and Yahenni would be worth considering if this was the case. Then you can also run cards like smallpox to slow down the opponent and blood artist to help close out the game. Grave pact would then probably warrant about two slots. However, this would make the deck more expensive, and it might alter its strategy more than you might like.

Whether you decide to implement my suggestions or not, I think Skirsdag High Priest is a must. A 5/5 demon each turn is too much for most people to handle, and there are plenty of morbid triggers. Maybe take out Carrier Thrall?

Thanks for the suggestions! I had a Grave Pact floating around at one time, but must've sold it. Skirsdag High Priest is an awesome suggestion. Definitely would replace the Carrier Thrall. Bitterblossom is a bit out of my current budget, but is definitely on my radar now for this deck. Thanks again! :D

Love the deck synergy.

Might I suggest Footsteps of the Goryo as an added creature retrieval plus sacrifice effect.

You should also look into Disturbing Plot and Morbid Plunder to cycle through already dead creatures and keep the pressure on your opponent.

Wow these are all great options. I especially dig Footsteps of the Goryo. Having the ability to return any of my creatures from the grave and force sac them at the end of turn could be huge. Question: Do the returned creatures (i.e. the ones returned with Footsteps), do they having summoning sickness? The text says return to play, but it doesn't say they have haste... Plus, it's sorcery speed, so I can only cast on my turn, which doesn't help by providing a blocker. It still could be a cool option, but for a 3 drop, I feel like something better could fit there, like a creature.

Disturbing Plot and Morbid Plunder could be awesome in this too, I just wish they were a bit cheaper CMC-wise. It might not matter since I have so much removal floating around and can control the board pretty efficient early on.

Also, after browsing through my black sorceries I found Ghoulcaller's Chant, which returns two Zombies from grave to hand. Being able to return a Nantuko Husk and a Fleshbag Marauder could be pretty great, plus I can still return one of all the other creatures too. I think I'm going to replace Vile Rebirth with Ghoulcaller's Chant, at least temporarily, to see how it works.

From what I can tell, they do suffer from summoning sickness sorry. I was actually thinking of how good a pair Footsteps would be with Fleshbag as you could potentially sacrifice three times in one turn.
