Deck Description

Laboratory Maniac is a 2/2 Human Wizard for 2U in Innistrad with the amazing ability: "If you would draw a card while your library has no cards in it, you win the game instead."
Hence we just need to get rid of our library quicker than our opponent can kill us...
(the best way to do it is looking for a card that is not in your deck with Demonic Consultation)

Deck discussion for Mill yourself

For Demonic Consultation, can you name a card you dont have in your library and mill yourself entirely?

that's a great idea, haven't even seen that as i intended to get Laboratory Maniac with it...
I'm not sure whether that'd work, but as there is a ruling "10/4/2004: You must name a card that actually exists in the game of Magic." i take from that you don't need to name a card in your deck (as long as it exists)!?

I assume that If you had Laboratory Maniac out already and then played Demonic Consultation and named say Mana Leak (not in your deck), you'd win right then.

no it would not work b/c you are revealing cards, not drawing them

0

actually it does work. yeah you are revealing them, but the end result of it is that you are removing them from play

0

yeah just to be clear: you don't win right away but in the beginning of your next turn because that's when you have to draw a card and your entire library was exiled the turn before

right, my bad, not RIGHT then, but the next time you had to draw (next draw step or when you played Trade Secrets, or Jace Archivist's Ability)

fine, i concede the point. how about gitaxian probe so you can instantly draw turn of even if your tapped out.

Also, Mind Funeral would pair well with Mana Severance to mill yourself in two cards.

Mind Funeral only targets an opponent. That would have been SO ridiculous though!

Laboratory Maniac...wow. I cannot WAIT until Innistrad :D

THIS IS SUCH A FUCKING COOL DECK IDEA

Love this deck. Umm, probably not necessary, but how about Treasure Hunt + Selective Memory? I guess Mana Severance + Selective Memory is better, but there's something cool about drawing your whole deck. Also, Treasure Hunt would trigger the maniac, since you would try to draw one when you had none. Then again, you might just want to add tutors for tainted pact instead.

Treasure Hunt wouldn't trigger the win, since it doesn't make you draw.

Demonic Tutors are the way to go!

yeah i'm afraid Majician is right about the drawing. in addition mana severance works quite well on it's own whereas Treasure Hunt only works well in combination with Selective Memory
tutors are indeed an idea, gosh i think i made this deck around 3am...

Yeah, sorry about that. Didn't read the card well.
Anyway, Innistrad's going to be an amazing set. It looks like the "mill yourself" thing will be a theme with Lab Man, Deranged Assistant, Mirror-Mad Phantasm, and etc.
That will be interesting.

A really simple combo. Have mentor of the meek in play. cast Leveler. cast laboratory maniac, and activate the mentor ability.
Or even faster/cheaper. have a horn of greed in play, cast a leveler, play a land.

in the end it's a badass 2 card combo. Laboratory Maniac/ Leveler.

Leveler is too expensive. Demonic Consultation costs 4 less mana and can do the same thing!

Puresight Merrow + Paradise Plume

Utopia Vow also works with/inplace of the plume.

Not only can you mill yourself infinitly - you can look for answers (and your maniac) too !

ok i can see how utopia vow and puresight merrow is gonna work but what are you doing with paradise plume? that's an normal artifact not an equipment, so it only allows to tap itself not puresight merrow!?

I think you are on the right track but the card you are looking for is Paradise Mantle. I actually think that Puresight with a Paradise Mantle on it could be the secret to making this a Legacy or Modern Legal deck.

This is a awesome deck and It would be fun to figure out a version that is legal in more formats.

Jace and Innistrad Liliana come to mind. Also Jace's erasure, and the join forces draw card and discard card.

yeah i thought about them, though they seem to be too slow compared to e.g. Demonic Consultation

0

I think leveler is much better than a bunch of your 4 CMC cards in there. Also- I think this should be pure combo rather than some combos and some attempts at a slow mill. The slow way will never be fast enough- you should just play ponder/preordain/brainstorm etc. to dig up the combo fast, a few tutors like you have, the combo itself, and protection for the combo. I'll take a crack at it and post back.

Here- I decided to build it for modern, not legacy, but the idea is there- it would work better with consultations and tutors, but I think there are better legacy decks out there, and probably better modern ones too but what the heck. Anyway, take a look: http://www.mtgvault.com/ViewDeck.aspx?DeckID=232212

Demonic Consultation is banned in Legacy anyway. This deck is for casual. The one I made has 4 Demonic Tutors in it lol :p

If you're already running 4 Selective Memory, you might consider running 1 Treasure Hunt as another win con.
I'm also building around a blue creature from Innistrad. Check out my Snapcaster Mage deck.

Hey reya,

Thanks for the heads up about this new card Laboratory Maniac it looks like a wonderful new card to abuse.

It's too bad that Demonic Consulation and many other tutors are banned in Legacy. But this is nice vintage deck even with out the Power cards.

Laboratory Maniac might even work into a painter's servant + grindstone deck with player milling themselves for the win with Laboratory Maniac out.

This deck isn't standard so that leaves you with some many options. Where is Leveler!?!!? 5 cost exile your library 10/10 creature.

yeah it was suggested several times already. it'd obviously be great in here, though i havent had the time to redo the deck after all the suggestions so far and there are several other decks based on this one using leveler already - anyhow as soon as i've got the time (and will) to redo this i will definitely add them
