The owner of this deck hasn't added a sideboard, they probably should...

Submit a list of cards below to bulk import them all into your sideboard. Post one card per line using a format like "4x Birds of Paradise" or "1 Blaze", you can even enter just the card name by itself like "Wrath of God" for single cards.

Deck Description

Honestly if your budget for an EDH deck is 20$, you probably should consider a different format. However this deck has some actual potential at the kitchen table. Gwafa Hazid is a very fun and political commander. This deck will not be the best at your commander games, but we actually aren't trying to either. With this deck we are looking to make deals with players to live longer and win with Approach of the Second Sun or using our opponents cards against them.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask. I will happily help with deckbuilding and gameplay.

How to Play

All removal and counterspells should be used politically. While a normal control deck MIGHT be able to play Archenemy and win with a combo, we probably can't. Removal should be used as bargaining chips in deals such as:

"I won't remove your creature if it doesn't swing my way, you can have your fun"
"Don't target me with that spell and I can help you get rid of that creature"

You can and should go into specifics of exactly what you want people to do when making deals. Always keep your word on these deals, this will make people more likely to collaborate with you in the future. Backstabbing someone for value is nice, but in future games people may not trust you.

The bigger effect your removal can make, the better. Try to abuse this, if a player would literally die and be kicked out of the game, you can save them. They will most likely agree to any deal to keep them alive in the game, but don't push the deal too far. This is also recommended if you are saving a weaker player. You may not be able to take on another player alone and you'll need some help.

Our commander, Gwafa Hazid, is also a great bargaining tool. His ability works much like removal and we already established the power of removal. If someone is potentially scared of him pregame or ingame, you can start out by stating that he doesn't have to stop creatures from attacking and blocking as long as they don't come your way. You could also place counters on opponent's creatures for card draw. An opponent's mana dork will likely not attack anyways so you could strike up a deal to give them a card for something in exchange. Or perhaps an opponent is desperate enough for cards that they simply do not care about Gwafa's effect.

Never kingmake in a game of EDH. If your opponent is not making your deals worthwhile, do NOT proceed to enable them further. Just handing out free card draw and getting nothing in return is not worth it and it will frustrate everyone who isn't getting it. Going insane with Soldevi Sentry might be fun, but use these abilities sparingly.

While I generally dislike direct grouphug effects in EDH as they enable others to win out of nowhere way too quickly and turn the game into absolute chaos, in small doses it can work as a deterrent. Giving your opponent's 1 extra draw a turn will want them to keep you around for some extra benefit, but giving Johnny 100 more mana each turn, because of extra lands and mana doubling will be seen as a problem. We don't want to go overboard on these effects, just enough to keep everyone going in the game and having a good time.

Now hopefully with these tips you will have survived to be the second player in an EDH game. Now it's time to take on the head honcho. Unleash the full force of your spells against your opponent, one on one there are no deals to be made and you're full of removal. Remove everything threatening and play the control game. Bust out your win condition when the coast is clear and win the game. This should be easily doable with all the removal and countermagic protecting it.

Win or lose, you will hopefully create an interesting game of magic. Where the rules go beyond the cards and comprehensive rulebook much akin to a tabletop game.

Cards like Magewright's Stone and Thousand-Year Elixir are useful to abuse an activated ablility.

Indeed they are, but they can't fit with the 20$ budget.
