Upon watching a short video essay on this deck, I was hooked. The basic story goes that a conflict arose in a playgroup where one person thought that buff spells were good in commander, and another thought they were bad. The first person went about trying to prove his friend wrong, so he set out to build a deck around them, initially with Pako and Haldan as partner commanders, which didn't work. However, upon switching to Xyris, the entire deck dynamic shifted to be one of the most interesting decks I've ever heard of - and it only costs around $20.

How to Play

For a full dedicated video on how the deck functions, see the above YouTube link.

The dynamic of this deck goes as follows: the player of the deck will ramp a bit to be able to cast Xyris and ask the table who wants to draw some cards, and generally someone down on their luck or missing key deck pieces will volunteer. The player will then swing with Xyris, perhaps buff him depending on how many cards the player wants to draw, and everyone wins... right? Well, the controller of Xyris also gets to draw that many cards, and with players now realizing how much of a boon his damage trigger is, often people will scramble to be the one to get attacked. According to the Snail video, sometimes the commander will even be protected from removal by other players at the table because they rely on that draw effect. Eventually, though, Xyris threatens commander damage death, and with one fell swoop, he can take a player clean out of the game and draw a bunch of cards for his controller. Usually at this point, the table realizes the threat, but it's much too late; the controller has had their selection of cards from the many they've drawn to protect and buff Xyris, and to remove threats, all but ensuring victory. Another reason he's never seen as a target is the fact that you still have to discard to hand size; with cards like Reliquary Tower or Thought Vessel, people will see you with a grip of 15 or 20 cards and immediately see a problem, but with only 7, people will not consider that to be a big issue, which all feeds into the gameplan. That's another reason the deck only costs $20 as well; look less menacing and sweep people from underneath without them even knowing it.
