Deck Description

When I bought my prerelease pack, I pulled a Prerelease Deeproot Champion and because of that, I wanted to build a more competitive deck with him as the central piece.

The deck is based on +1/+1 counters with Herald of Secret Streams and Deeproot Champion as my vanguard. There are some cards that can be interchanged without harming the deck idea or style.

Kumena's Omenspeaker (You can replace Merfolk Branchwalker) - It's a very good card, and also a very powerful CMC1 if you can play either an Island or a Merfolk creature on turn 2. However, I chose Merfolk Branchwalker instead simply because there's a relatively high possibility for Merfolk Branchwalker to become a 3/2 on turn 2 or draw you a land card in case of a bad hand. Also, Merfolk Branchwalker gives itself +1/+1 while Kumena's Omenspeaker just becomes a 2/2.

Vineshaper Mystic (You can replace Jade Guardian) - Vineshaper Mystic is CMC 1 less than Jade Guardian and can put two +1/+1 counters on up to two different Merfolk creatures you control. The only reason why I chose the Jade Guardian instead is that I like the inherent Hexproof it gives which I feel is stronger against spot removal control and can dodge Chandra, Torch of Defiance and other removals similar to Harnessed Lightning.

Metallic Mimic (You can replace Jade Guardian) - It is a much stronger card than Jade Guardian or Vineshaper Mystic. I just personally don't own this card because it's expensive to obtain right now and it's not a Merfolk Creature on cast which can occasionally miss Deeproot Water's trigger ability.

How to Play

The deck is mostly based off of Herald of Secret Streams, you put +1/+1 counters on Merfolk creatures you control and make them unblockable.

Some notable cards you could change if you'd like to play more expensive stuff

Metallic Mimic for Jade Guardian. The tradeoff of having Metallic Mimic instead of Jade Guardian is it will synergize well with Deeproot Waters as the 1/1 Hexproof Merfolk Tokens will come in as a 2/2 instead of a 1/1. The Metallic Mimic also cost 2CMC Less then Jade Guardian.

The Jade Guardian itself is Hexproof which makes it harder to remove at the cost of CMC4. It can dodge Harnessed Lightning, Lightning Strike, and other spot removals making it a harder creature to deal with.

Sideboard:
It's full of hate cards, Essence Scatter is used to deal with Mid-Range decks.

Negate is used to deal with Vehicles.

Duress is can be changed with Chart a Course to deal with Ramp Dinosaur by forcing them to discard their Enchantment Ramp. Also peeking at an opponent's hand gives you the ability to choose to play more aggressive against people who kept a good hand but bricked on lands.

If you change your entire sideboard with the more aggressive instants and sorceries in the main deck you can potentially change your deck into a Control Tempo. However, that will make it so your main source of damage comes from Deeproot Champion and you'd have to keep cards to protect it from being pinged off the board.

Deck discussion for G/U Merfolk Standard

Just so you know there is no reason at all you should be running Walk the Plank in this build since it requires BB . You only have 4 lands that produce black with no way to fetch them. The chances in having both out in order to cast it is so minimal. Not to mention having the Drowned Catacombs in the build hinder casting the rest of the deck efficiently as well.

That's true, you have a good point. I was mostly playing it in case I bump into Enrage Dinosaurs where lots of the stronger ones are CMC4 or more. I guess I'll just return Fatal Push back into my deck just to have a singular black removal.

What I play in my standard list is also Rishkar, Peema Renegade to also have a mana benefit from all the counters (and he brings counters when playing too) but it isnt a merfolk too so may not trigger Deeproot Waters. However, the mana benefit may make the game

Would you replace Jade Guardian with Rishkar, Peema Renegade in this case?

Not entirely unless you decide to go for Metallic Mimic
