How to Play

This is my personal list of best counter spells, based on CMC, special effects, and maybe drawbacks. This is in no particular order.

Currently Standard Counter Spells:

Cancel: Just plain bad. 3 for no other effects? Might as well spend that extra $ on a Dissolve playset.

Annul: Well, it was good in Theros with countering gods, but not really good anywhere else.

Negate/Gainsay: Negate is strictly better than Gainsay, you can probably see why.

Nullify: Countering Auras is okay in theros, but like Annul, not prominent anywhere else.

Countermand: I personally love this card for mill, cause its 1 more mana for 2 thought scours but no draw.

Statute of Denial: With 2 blue mana in the cost, you are most likely going to control a blue creature, so this is perfectly fine.

Stymied Hopes: Good for taking out high-costing things. Scry is helpful.

Stubborn Denial: Fun in Khans drafts. For 1 it's really good.

Disdainful Stroke: Good for countering Delve cards &/or dig through times. Or Siege Rhinos...

Dissipate: Exile? Meh. Not as good as dissolve.

Dissolve: 3 for a spell scry 1? Super good in decks where you want to control your draws.

SWAN SONG!!!: Best standard counter spell by far. Who cares about 2/2 birds? 1 freaking mana!
