Deck Description

This no nonsense Mono Black deck is death on tap:

Creatures:

Typhoid Rats - Turn 1 drop that has deathtouch. Very defensive card that often stops opponents from attacking as it kills titans (ignoring the Inferno Titan) / other heavy hitters with 1 shot. This card is brilliant!
Vault Skirge - Turn 1 drop (paying with 2 life) that can swing and hit on turn 2. The life spent getting the card out is quickly regained. Equip Lashwrithe at a later stage to have a heavy flying/lifelink creature!
Phyrexian Crusador - Fantastic card that ends games. Red and White can do nothing to stop this deadly creature. Equip this creature with Lashwrithe/Batterskull to quickly end the game with 10 infect counters (over 2 rounds)
Phyrexian Obliterator - destroys armies if blocked. Equip this card to make it even more deadly.
Skinrender - creature removal. Destroy this creature with your own removal cards if you must to mimic vat it for an infinite combo of -3/-3 counters on creatures every 2nd turn. What an evil combo!
Spellskite - protect your own creatures. Shuts down Wolf Run Ramp decks.

Removal:

14 removal cards allow you to efficiently deal with your opponents creatures either before or after they've entered the battlefield...

Despise/Distress - Look at your opponents hand and discard titans or Mirridian Crusador before creatures become a problem. Side note - Mirridian Crusador is a white card that has protection from black. This card is a serious threat to this black deck and must be removed from the opponents hand before it becomes a problem!
Go for the Throat / Cast Down - Instant death!
Virulent Wound - kills smaller creatures very cheaply. Can be cast on turn 1 if you opponent plays 1st and lays a card. Allows this deck to be active from turn 1 if no creatures are in your hand on the 1st turn.
Skinrender - 3 x -1/1 counters when entering the battlefield. Infinite removal if destroyed and then mimic vatted.

How to Play

Sample Play (defensive):

Turn 1 - Play Typhoid Rats (deathtouch)
Turn 2 - Play Spellskite
Turn 3 - Play Phyrexian Crusador
Turn 4 - Play Skinrender (removes a creature with 3 x -1/1 counters)
Turn 5 - Play Batterskull.
etc

Sample play (aggressive):

Turn 1 - Pay 2 life and play a Vault Skirge (flyer that can attack on turn 2 and has lifelink)
Turn 2 - Removal (Cast Down / Go for the Throat / Distress etc)
Turn 3 - Play Phyrexian Crusador
Turn 4 - Play Lashwrithe. Pay 4 Life and equip it to Vault Skirge. Attack for 5 flying and Lifelink

or

Turn 4 - Play Lashwrithe. Pay 4 life and equip it to Phyrexian Crusador and attack for 5/5 Infect and First Strike.

or

Turn 4 - Play Phyrexian Obliterator
Turn 5 - Play Lashwrithe. Equip it and attack with Phyrexian Obliterator

This no-nonsense deck is absolutely disgusting as it's a deck-killer!! Enjoy.

Deck discussion for Obliteration

I like the deck as I have been trying to do a mostly noninfect monoblack deck. I would suggest some sort of tutoring or card drawing for all of the one ofs you have. BSZ is an awesome removal card as well.

I'd forgotten about Black Sun Zenith. I run him in the side board for now whilst I work out what I would run out for him. Do you have any examples of tutoring/drawing cards? The only drawing card that springs to mind is solemn simulacrum (which I find too expensive for this deck - he works well in green).

Tutoring is spells like Diabolic Tutor, Rune-Scarred Demon...they allow you to search for any card in the deck. Good card drawing is Tezzeret's Gambit, which also proliferates, and Bloodgift Demon. All very cheap uncommons and rares.

If you are going for the somewhat infect route, try Virulent Wound instead of Dead Weight maybe. Instant speed removal for one Black.

This is a superb suggestion! Thank you for this tip. I think I will run out the Dead Weights and replace them with Virulent Wounds instead!!!

Some of my favorite sideboard cards are Memoricide and Surgical Extraction. I think the latter option is the more expensive of the two. Maybe for sideboard add more situational cards for your local meta, and less removal.

Word of caution Re: Phyrexian Crusader. None of your other creatures deal in poison counters, so more often than you would like, it won't co tribute to the plan when not equipped with Lashwrithe. The evasion is good, but it alone can't carry the whole game plan of poison counters. Having to effectively track 2 different types of life totals gets awkward VERY quickly.
Personally, if try including a few more other evasive creatures that don't deal poison counters, like Vampire Nighthawk.

Hey buddy,

Great comments! I really appreciate the feedback. It's always good to get some advice on how to tweak and better the decks :)

I'm keen on keeping Phyrexian Crusader in the deck for a number of reasons:
- It destroys red and white decks as they can't deal with him due to him having protection from red/white.
- Early on, even though I may not be pursuing the Infect route, he's still a great blocker. Due his first strike nature, and dealing -2/-2 counters... he can effectively kill 1 and 2 toughness creatures and still able to block 3/3's (as he'll reduce them down to 1/1's in his first strike phase.
- Late game - he becomes even more of a threat, as after you've equipped a +4/+4 Batterskull equipment onto it, he effectively becomes a 6/6 first strike, infect, vigilance, life link with protection from red and white! NASTY! This is a BEAST of a card to deal with.
- Throw in a Lashwrithe equipment too, and this guy is battering the opponent down each turn as he attacks for lethal (10+ infect counters) each turn.
- Keeping track of different health and infect counters isn't an issue with paper magic or a biggie either ;)
- Granted, this isn't an infect deck, so why is he in here - but that's ok right? His other qualities still make him a nasty card to deal with that can really mess red and white decks around.
- In summary, you're right... the synergy is missing when it comes to pure infect... but his presence in this deck still makes it uncomfortable for your opponents - especially when you beef him up later with some heavy equipment.

Vampire Nighthawk:
- What a GREAT card!! I love this card and glad you mentioned him. He has everything: Lifelink, deathtouch, Flying!
- Have you considered his slightly better upgraded counter part: Nighthawk Scavenger ?
- It has the same abilities as the Vampire Nighthawk, but has the potential to be a bigger, harder hitter.
