Deck Description

So it's a thought, but this is what I think I'd run for a competitive vintage control deck.

This was a bit off-putting for me to design, as it resembles nothing of my usual control designs, so rather than fitting it to my usual design style, I fitted it to my play style. I think I've enjoyed building this more than almost any of my decks other than Reanimator and Lands, but I'll probably enjoy this least of them all :/

Until the Vault updates the database to include Mana Crypt I will be using Memnite as a placeholder.

Deck discussion for Erm, no you don't

How is Mana Crypt not on here? That's craycray.

So are all the one-of's restricted in Legacy/Vintage? I don't really know that much about it because most people my local shop just play Standard and EDH.

Pretty much anything that's a one-of other than Tezzeret is restricted yeah >_>

I don't really care for standard, but EDH has quickly become one of my favourite formats. So I support that.

Vintage is NOT a format I suggest delving into, but it is fun. The cost is insane, so I only use them on workstation <_<

I am NOT willing to pay loads of money, cause I don't have any, on magic. I quit on booster packs and will just make the most of the cards I have. In M12 I gotta buy some singles, and in Innistrad, then I'll trade for my decks I build on here :)

Bob works in here, of course.

I probably will buy from them, simply because with the reprinting of Call to the Grave and Smallpox I know what I'll be doing(hint: it isn't pretty for the others) XD

And Bob is just a boss wherever he is. I've been reviewing my view of cards, and I've found I place Bob in the top five most broken cards in all of MtG. However, I don't count Yawgmoth's Will in that list, as I think that really it truly is the most broken card ever printed.

Will you make this a standard deck? I would like to use the list as well. I assume it would have Bloodghast as well.

The one with Smallpox and Call to the Grave is going to be standard yeah, I've not decided much other than I want it to douche around with my friends who play standard. Also, it will work well with my friends trio of Zombie decks for casual play.

I'm really looking forward to this, I use so many fun tricks it's barely even funny

Well, if it's tournament quality and affordable, let's collaborate somehow. I need to see the zombies from M12.

It might wind up tournament quality, but I'm not sure what route I want to take yet. I suggest using the base site for mtg salvation and looking at the spoilers for m12 for a jumpstart.

I've been thinking perhaps B/r, or Grixis, but no decision yet.

Dude! Zombie Infestation. OMG>!!! Discard that Pharaoh and a Bloodghast!! Then we have Gravey Tits and Phyrexian Obliterator. :))

Also that could splash white for Gideon, or white could splash black.

mana drain is one of the most broken cards in Magic. seriously i loved using it until it was banned in my playgroup lol

I can seriously understand why, it's the most dangerous hard counter in the game, and one of the most accessible for the kicker!

If I could assemble the pieces of this thing, I have a strange feeling they would ban mana drain from use. Much like Nether Void usually finds itself in peoples play groups.

haha well it wouldn't surprise me if it were eventually banned:p its so broke

I've beaten a lot of decks with my newest Nether Void Deck, I was loving it. I didn't think Survival should have been banned, in fact since it was banned, I think you're right. It's more dangerous than Survival IMO.

Yeah, I was kind of surprised it was banned personally. It really wasn't that good of a tutor, and a lot of decks actually wrecked it... I think I find Entomb, a one use card, to be ten times the tutor it was.

Eh, I don't think they should've banned it, but the card was damn good in the right decks.

It was good, but from a competitive standpoint it wasn't really as dangerous as say; Enlightened Tutor. It messed a lot of people up, but I think skullclamp was even better than that, and I'm all for unbanning that.

I would like to be able to say the same thing about Mystical Tutor, but that banning was sadly quite reasonable.

I agree with you 100% WnB, entomb gives me much more consistent hapiness. I dont think it should have been banned either

Hehehe, if you ever want an easy way to make Wumps mad, bring up Skullclamp's banning =P
Sadly ET was a bit on the ban-worthy side. But only juuuust there =/

It's a real testament to someone's skill and understanding of the game when they can confidently say that Yawgmoth's Will, not Black Lotus, is the most broken card ever made.

...and that's because they're actually right. =P

Indeed. I'd like for competitive vintage to be possible without it, but it really is just that powerful... If any card other than an ante card should be banned in vintage, I think it's safe to say we can all agree which one it would be...

I've actually never found myself caring for Black Lotus, it's just a piece of acceleration. I know it's the most powerful one-for-one acceleration in the game, but really I've been thinking about taking it out. And maybe a mind scuptor, it's dangerous yeah, but Tezzeret just plain wins the game.

I completely agree, i've never developed a love for black lotus. It's always proved to be an early game excell that burns out and really only ultimately empties their hand super quickly

I've only really wanted black lotus in a hand if tezz was there, and even then as bait. I find more often than not, I'd just rather have Lotus Cobra, or a Claim. Hell, maybe even a Recoup in the 60, so I could improve my Gift situation game one.

So much Brokeness! Ugh. Do NOT let me play against something like this. Haha. To be serious though, it looks pretty sickeningly good. I am definitely not a Vintage player, but it seems like this deck would be quite good. Because some of the cards are those that are so broken they're banned everywhere else and/or super expensive, I've never played with many of them and thus have a few questions... Yawgmoth's Will - I know it's a sick card, no doubt, but I'm confused as to its purpose in this (control) deck. Seems better in like combo or w/e (not that just because it's "worse" in here means it can't be in it - any blue deck may want to play Jace though some are of course better than others).
Lotus Cobra - Love the card, but is it really that good for Legacy? Let alone Vintage! What's it for and what's it sided in against?
Inkwell Leviathan - Is this your main win condition? Is it fine in there with the Bobs? Why not Blighsteel as a Tinker target?
Recoup - Really? Why? It's only on your turn even and it's sorcery...

Again, solid deck. Probably perfect card choices for one reason or another but being fairly new to Legacy and never having touched Vintage, I just don't fully understand some of the them.

Yawgmoth's Will, the more you use it, the more it becomes 'yawg win'. By itself, it isn't broken at all, but rather when surrounded as such... Ye gads, I can replay Tinker, Time Walk, Black Lotus, and Demonic Tutor, and then have counter backup. It is the most insanely broken card yet to be printed.

Lotus Cobra... I kind of want to up it to three of them in the board actually, I plan to edit in a bit actually for just that. The reason I want the snake is so I can pop a threat quickly, AND have counter backup. Mana advantage is usually viewed as holding back a counter, so in this deck it's perfect actually.

Inkwell was chosen over Blightsteel because Shroud is just as useful in vintage as in Legacy. And it being a blue card for FoW is icing on the cake.

Recoup is here for a late game Gifts Ungiven trick, I pick Tinker, Time Walk, Yawgmoth's Will, and Recoup. No matter what you give me, I can either now, or in a turn. It's a late game bomb, and another reason to use the snake here.

Oddly enough, the usual route to victory in this deck comes through Time Vault, and Voltaic Key. It's an infinite turn setup, costing only three to put on the field, and one more to activate. It's simply brutal.

Oh, interesting. Thanks for explaining some of those. Especially Recoup. I never even considered using it as part of a Gifts package! And yeah, I've seen the Time Vault combo which just seems sick, although you do at least have to be careful not to kill yourself with infinite turns and a Dark Confidant. Haha. I have heard of it happening before so you wouldn't be the first! :P

0

Yeah.... The turn setup has you searching frantically for Tinker to end it quicker >_<

And I wish I could say the Gifts package with Recoup was my idea, but I have to admit I jacked that out of Stephen Menendian's playbook. He's one of the few people who writes MtG articles other than for the vault I care to even glance at. His articles are what inspired me to start doodling up vintage lists, mostly to see if I could make things run smoother/fit my style.
