Deck Description

I have been tweaking this deck so I can have a go at modern, previous iterations seemed to slow for the modern format, other decks could win by turn 3-4 and so I endeavoured to make this deck do the same. The lack of fetchlands is annoying as the ability to thin the deck would be most welcome as it allows the combo pieces to be assembled more easily.

Let me know what you think, really want to try this deck out but want some help with the sideboard (have some obvious picks such as shattering spree etc but do not know the modern meta very well at all)

How to Play

The combo is Lilian's caress + Burning Inquiry + increasing vengeance, Can in theory combo out turn 3

Turn 1 - Blackcleave Cliffs, exile SSG play liliana's caress,
Turn 2 - Blackcleave Cliffs, lilianas caress
Turn 3 - red mana source, burning inquiry + increasing vengeance = 24 damage

The rest of the deck is built to fuel or find the combo, street wraith and gitaxian probe to draw through your deck, Simian spirit guide and Lotus bloom for ramp, Ravens crime over thoughtseize as can be played from graveyard. megrim as backup in case Lilian's caress gets nuked (surgical extraction etc) Blightning and lightning bolt for extra damage.

So any thoughts? could this combo possibly work?

Deck discussion for Burning Caress

I like it. Its very different that the discard deck that i see, ones that run the Quest. I like the fact that Spells an come back, or go off twice, blightning and increasing vengance feels dirty together.

Yep with burning inquiry also hitting myself I wanted some graveyard interaction. I have thought about splashing blue for snapcaster just in case one of my combo pieces gets binned.

Blue would also make it so you dont get trolled by leylines as hard in games 2-3, I support the blue Idea. It will slow you down, but it'll be a lot safer vs conbo decks.

Would it be worth just keeping the blue splash in the sideboard to bring in on games 2-3? could bring in snapcaster and some bounce for simian spirit guide and Megrim/blightning.

Have you been testing this out at events? or just on cockitrice? I wouldn't be able to say until I knew what bad matchups you have.
I assume you have a bad match up vs affinity and some of the faster aggro decks(infect, boggles)
you would need at least 3-4 anger of the gods** in the sb for affinity (you just side out bolts or maybe street wriath)

Maybe staying R/B would be better, you can just side into IoKs or thoughtseizes, then maybe want graf diggers or some other cards.

If you know which decks you've been having trouble with it'll be easier to figure out.

I just assume affinity is a bad match up because they normally dont have a hand by turn 2-3

I haven't tested this deck out yet, I do have it proxied and will test it at my local store, I am not too bothered about the opponent having a hand as burning inquiry is the main discard engine for liliana's caress and burning inquiry forces them to draw three before the discard. Was staying away from thoughtseize as my draw engines (street wraith and probe) already force my own life total down. I imagine affinity would be a bad matchup which is why I thought of shattering spree ( can target the drums and other non creature artifacts). Control would be a bad matchup for me but blood moon (I think thats what it is called) appears to be an auto include in the sideboard. Zoo might be problematic as well as I run very little removal, might include some terminates to come in for the blightnings. The other card that will cause me problems is Leyline but reading burning inquiry and caress again neither target so that should not be too much problem.

These are my thoughts on the current big decks in Modern and I am only starting out in the format.

Thanks for the input :)

If you plan on playing blood moon, I would try to up the swamp count by 1-2(i know you have lotus but still)

I know inquiry is the main focus, and sure it is fine and all I just meant you can easily side out blightning and whatever else for anger of the gods as it will improve your match up.
If affinity doesnt have a hand chances are they are smashing for 10 infect or two turns of normal beats so you should sorta care:P.

I run the mono-black discard deck or 8-rack, so we do have a somewhat similar gameplan, mines just more grindy lol.

Thanks for the advice, being a bit new to the format I did not know affinity could hit for infect so quickly (I do try and do my research lol) will work on a sideboard tonight and try and get the deck updated :)

Yeah, they use inkmoth nexus and blinkmoth nexus. It really depends on their hand which route they go. sometimes it'll be infect, other times cranial plating beats, if they don't have a plating they can just use ravager to sac everything and pump up 1 creature (normally ornithopter, vault skirge or either nexus) and last but not least the slow hands consist of signal pest or steel overseer without the other pieces mentioned above.

The best way to beat affinity is with sweepers (drown in sorrow, anger of the gods, damnation, creeping corrosion, shattering spree etc.)

I might add some of the 8 rack pieces in the sideboard as more options against the more grindy/control opponents, as well as thoughtseize and anger of the gods/damnation in the sideboard, though these depend on your meta at your local play area! :)

Will look into control decks and the best way to combat them, good thing I already have a playset of thoughtseize!

8-RACK:

MONO-B CONTROL:

Obviously the decks can vary a bit depending on your own meta, the top is the deck I play in modern. 8-rack destroys combo and slower decks, while mono-b control has a better match up vs the more creature based decks.

8 rack was where I originally started from whichevolved into this deck, When I started to search for what discarded more than one card I came across Burning inquiry and then the brewing started :)

Waste not is amazing with Burning Inquiry, Might fit your deck when it's released.
I have checked out the different splashes for 8-rack I feel B/r or B/u are the best(at least until the other fetches get reprinted, in which case white will be better)

B/r gives access to Bolt, and a few spells like pyroclasm and anger to make the affinity/zoo decks a better match up.

B/u makes spellskit hurt less(and lets us main board 2) allowing us to have better match ups vs burn, infect, boggles.
blue also gives us Academy Ruins allowing us to bring back out racks and bridges.

Green gives abrupt decay and some artifact/enchantment hate but over nothing much that helps us in our worst match ups.

lets us actually cast our leylines lol, also enchantment hate ect.

Forgot white also allows us to play lingering souls and path in place of bitter blossom and our removal package.

Got round to the sideboard, I think it covers most bases any further suggestions? Also edited the main land base due to the inclusion of blood moon.

Seems fine, I wouldn't go messing around with it too much until you get more info on your meta and which match-ups are hard for you.
its a pretty balanced sideboard, if your meta is burn heavy you may want 4 IoK in place of Seize as it helps with burn, also cage is a secret tech agaisnt burn as it makes it so they can't unearth creatures.

You can get some testing in on cockitrice if you take the time to learn all the little functions on it.

Well have played a few games on mtgo and the deck is running very well, things I have learned; Do not keep a hand that has no combo pieces in, kept a few hands with plenty of draw etc but was dead before the combo went off, being able to play from the graveyard is huge, playing a discarded ravens crime pushed through the final points of damage a number of times. Not played against any of the big decks yet but hoping my proxied deck can get some testing at my local shop :)
