Deck Description

Soul Sisters is a modern deck that has been around for a while now. Its namesake comes from the cards Soul Warden and Soul's Attendant. From those, we get a white-based life gain-aggro deck. It focusing on using all these small creatures to gain huge amounts of life, with that life you use it to win the game. Then, you swing in with your army. The deck gained popularity when it had some success in the competitive scene. It was also seen as a good budget choice because most of it's cards are pretty cheap. It is only one color so the absence of expensive lands cuts makes the deck very affordable. Most the cards are either commons or not so expensive staples. Viewed as a nice choice to start off with in modern, it was played by many newcomers to the format. The game plan can be very simple and straightforward.

From what I can find, the origins of the deck were a standard deck brewed by Conley Woods. Both the soul sisters where in standard at the time., so it had a decent selection of cards we use here. At the 2010 U.S. nationals Conley Woods, Gavin Verhey, and Tom Ross played the deck and it took the tournament by storm. Though it did not make top 8 it deserved a honorable mention. From here the deck was converted into a cheap and easy modern deck. And as it turns out, it's pretty good.

How to Play

This deck has a few interactions you need to be aware of.

Ranger of Eos:
So with this card you are going to need to be able to know which cards to search for. My main choice would be Martyr of Sands and Serra Ascendant. If you set that up the next turn you are in good shape. Now your choices could differ depending your board state. If your close to dying to an aggro deck you might go for double martyr. If you have no cards in hand and are at above thirty life you will probably get double Ascendant. There are many more scenarios.

Windbrisk Heights:
There are a few tricks with this card. The obvious one is that Spectral Procession completely sets us up for an activation. Another being the choice of card. The choice is almost as easy as the best card in the top 4 cards. A combat trick with Honor of the Pure is that you activate it in the combat phase, then pump your team surprising your opponent.

Deck discussion for Hey, Soul Sister

unfortunately, this deck looks like it wins more than it does. Its not very competitive in the current modern meta. Some people have tried adding red (myself included) for Norin the Wary, Purphoros, Lightning Bolt and Lightning Helix, and that model is a bit more consistent.

something you can add without adding a color is Genesis Chamber. the interaction there is very good against decks that run only a few creatures.

I agree. But for the sake of the original deck, I only posting this one, of course anything could make it better. That's why it's so good. It's such a flexible shell that you can go in any direction.

in what way do fetches help n this deck? you would have a valid argument if Windbrisk Heights was a plains, or if the deck was running Mistveil Plains, but neither is the case, and there is no need to run fetches in a deck with a mono colored mana base.

Fetches actively hurt this deck. Every point of damage makes it harder to turn on Serra ascendant

I would argue that fetchlands lower your land count, thin your deck, require you to play less lands....

and I would argue that its money you do not need to spend, and it does not improve the deck enough to do so, and as previously stated, any damage you take makes this deck worse.

The statistics of deck thinning and why it's not worth it

PhyrexianPossum normally I would agree that thinning your deck is a good idea, I just don't think this deck can afford to do so, since one of your main win conditions is to make serra ascendant a very large threat and swing in a bunch, fetching for plains a few times could actually hurt you by making your ascendant not able to become a 6/6 the turn you need it to. Just my thoughts on the issue, but honestly I love this deck idea, it's very cool and I've wanted to make it myself! :D

not like his brilliant $200 would be very helpful. at least I have EW around lol

First off you need 4 martyr of sands, it enables the broken start of Serra ascendant into martyr sac martyr swing for 6. It's te best life gain for the buck

Now the more interesting part
Do you think archangel of thune is good enough? If you have any of the soul sisters on board everything gets +x+x for the number of soul sisters just from archangel entering play.

My version I've been tweaking with

Archangel of the thine is just too slow. Sure, its a good beater, but instead of playing one big guy and gaining a bit, you could play a bunch of little guys and gain a ton.

The good part is it makes all your little guys big guys if you have any soul sisters in play, as soon as it enters

I really like your deck however I think if you take a more aggressive stance with life gain it becomes to overbearing for someone to deal with.

here is my life gain deck:

You see, in the current modern metagame, gaining tons and tons of life isn't as relevant with decks like Melira Pod, which can just deal infinite amounts of damage. I'd much rather have more life than my opponent and still be able to keep constant pressure, rather than have minimal pressure and have more life.

interesting take on it. With your deck it seems that melira pod will just run this deck over. Same with decks like jund or zoo. How will life gain matter against a deck like splinter twins?

this deck stomps on kiki-pod and twin. if you have any 2 soul sisters out, they cannot win the game. against Melirapod, you hold up for Path and deal with the problems.

The kiki-pod and twin decks both run a lot of creature hate, not just creature hate small creatures (IE bolt, abrupt, lightning helix, path to exile in some builds) I see this deck being a hard battle for you to win. Granted I'm not saying you haven't or couldn't win but on average (which is what magic is about) this deck would not have enough power to take the tier one decks. To stop that from happening you should run Auriok Champion.
