Deck Description

Cruel Control is a deck that is based on traditional control ideas and fundamentals. The original 5cc is a deck from way back that only ran a few threats to maximize the control cards that it could run. The main difference is that it had an approach of locking opponents out of the game with cards like moat.

Fast forward to LOR block constructed and you will find the first modern day version of the deck called Quick n Toast which was developed by Manuel Bucher with help from other french pros. The next version was dubbed 5cc or Cruel Control, but it was typically only 4 colors dropping green. Several "Grixis" versions were made popular as standard progressed from there.

Cruel Control is a very adaptive deck that can be built for any environment. The Grixis colors have just about every tool a good control deck needs to operate. The deck digs very well for the answers you need to be successful and doesn't rely on big creatures to win. It is a true control deck that rewards players for knowing the meta and making correct plays.

How to Play

Focus on getting your "come into play tapped" lands in early. If you have discard, it's best used before your opponent has the chance to counter it. Hold up mana for counterspells / removal for as long as you can, and try to play your spells on your opponent's end of turn whenever possible. Your goal is to answer your opponent's threats and run them out of cards until you can drop Cruel Ultimatum. Once accomplished, bait out / discard / Clique away all your opponent's counters, then smack them with Ultimatum. At this point it should be fairly easy to Snapcaster -> Ultimatum and seal out the game with manlands + burn spells.
