Deck discussion for Better than Sex: Tits and Pastries.

I see it is sex because it has a birthing pod well played my friend well played. i wouldn't use see beyond tho i would probobly use...divination. it works better... check out my warstorm wave deck. plz

See Beyond puts things back in the deck that I want to Birthing Pod out or get out with the Forgemaster. Combining that with an instant-speed buff/debuff with Norn or a Sheoldred-induced Rise from the Grave AND Gatekeeper of Malakir effect on the same turn. then swinging with Swiftfoot Boots...

THAT'S better than sex.

See Beyond was like the condom to my infinite lust. Now I'm going bareback.

What will you be sacrifing to use the Forgemaster? Well the Simulacrum I suppose, but everything else seems needed. Maybe toss in some Wellsprings and take out some See Beyond.

Hmm Birthing Pod, Forgemaster, and Quicksilver Amulet. Good choices IMO.

See Beyond IS a nil point with Amulets. Good job.

My inner Timmy likes Mirrorworks too much to give it up ;)

Heck, with the quicksilver amulets you might not even need see beyond. I never even really considered that.

Alllll this mana ramp ... in a blue artifact/ counter deck.... it's really pretty damn disgusting.

Who needs draw when you've got the Forgemaster?

You know? I've been wracking my brain trying to find ways to help protect Praetors from removal in a similar deck, you think it might be worth it to add a couple of Brass Squire so you can swap Swiftfoot boots to Sheoldred or Norn in a pinch to protect them from removal? I like having options on the board, a lot of players wouldn't even see that interaction till it was too late.

That's sounds like a really good idea to me, though I'm sure you were directing the question to Awz?. As long as you play the stack right your creature would live, just make sure they declare who/what is being effected then do it.

1

yeah, Sheoldred is just BEGGING for an O-Ring or a Condemn. 6 counters might not be enough. (thankfully she is immune to doom blade AND dismember) The whole thing kind of falls apart without her.

Might be fun to pop out Norn 1st to bait the counter, THEN pop out Sheoldred and dredge Norn thhe next round. :)

Brass Squire might kick ass.

Hmmm.

Er - and by condemn I mean dispatch of course. Damn white removal spells all sound the same.

1

I was actually considering taking out the blue draw all together, loading up on more counters, and throwing in a couple Myr Battlespheres/Spines of Ish Sah. That might fix things, and make it Standard legit come October.

Maybe you should splash some white to put Grand Abolisher in here. It seems like you are very open early game even with the 8 counterspells. Maybe Porcelain Legionnaire instead. Just seems like you need some early defense.

1

That's a fantastic idea. However, I'm trying to keep this as mono-blue as possible. Don't wanna be yet another punk playin' UW control.

Of my group that 'gasms over Birthing Pod, I'm the only one keeping it mono-colored. The_Stinkweed_Pimp has Esper down, and islaybanes rocks WG (with Grand Abolisher).

Find me a one-mana counter is Standard and I'll kiss you.

well there are a few but none that counter everything. Dispel, Mental Misstep, Spell Pierce, and Turn Aside.

There's also Sundial of the Infinite, though it only works on your turn.

Dude, if Sundial worked on an opponent's turn.

Maximum hardness.

0

What I have noticed is that you can afford to take some early punishment with this. Turn 4 Wurmcoil is not just obtainable here, its actually the norm. Once your combo hits (usually around turn 5) norn will wipe the board. It's almost worth taking a little turn 1-2-3 beatdown to see people shit their pants when Norn comes out turn 5. (when they see the Wurmcoil they mistakenly think *its* the real threat, I've eaten a pacify on the guy before and couldn't stop myself from giggling a little)

1
Posted 19 August 2011 at 01:44

Indeed.

Grand Abolisher IS a problem, though. And anyone running whit is gonna be running Abolisher. Hmm.

Is Unsummon in M12? Pop it back on my turn, then counter it the following turn.

Horrendous card disadvantage, but I'm tight on options.

There's something better than Unsummon actually. Vapor Snag =]

1

Norn wipes it? unless there is equipment or a global buff on him, he should go bye bye when you pop her out. Abolisher cant even resolve with norn out.

Also, I was thinking about ratchet spellbomb as a way to deal with general threats too. (like 0-ring)

1
Posted 19 August 2011 at 04:31

I'd much rather lose Norn that be denied counters the whole game. Abolisher typically comes out turn two. Which blows if I take the draw.

Ratchet Bomb is an option. However, it's too damned slow in an already slow deck.

HMMMMM.

Vapor snag is pretty sweet, till you need it to get one of your own guys out of a jam...made that mistake once :(

0

It's problematic.

Upon further consideration, I think that the probability of drawing a Wurmcoil nulls the point of having Treasure Mage in the deck, and therefore Vapor Snag. Replacing Treasure Mages and Islands with the Cretarchs and Phyrexia's Cores.

Grand Abolisher is a major stumbling block.

Oblivion Ring, when it gets though, messes me up something terrible.

Mimic Vat with an Acidic Slime loaded into it is the absolute worst thing.

Anything that can win by turn four, like goblins. Hurts.

This deck has a lot, lot, LOT of counters, but I bring it upon myself by insisting upon using both Birthing Pod and the Amulets. Sexy, sexy cards.

Sex > Winning.

0

It relies a lot on the surprise. No one expects Elesh Norn to pop out of a Wurmcoil Engine. (Even better than the Spanish Inquisition) But once they see how it works, you can expect that birthing pod to get crushed/O-ringed. (having the O-ring on the field, taunting you, not being able to do crap about it, is maddening) If you are playing an abolisher deck, you could always grab some dismembers, spellbombs, and spines from a sideboard to replace your counters.

In duel, getting out that praetor is basically a win. It doesn't matter what your life total is when it happens, Norn + 2 5/5s in an un-counterable move that could potentially cost no mana is brutal when you pull it off.

1

Yep.

Then you throw in something like Sheoldred into the mix backed up with counters and Spine removal.

Chalices are rotating. I'm desperately trying to keep this T2-ready come October. No Chalices and See Beyond hurts me really bad.

The birthing pod wouldn't work because you dont have a sorcery in your deck.

0
Posted 21 August 2011 at 07:31

It seems you do not understand Birthing Pod. It can be used only when you could play a sorcery, if you had one. Such times are during your main phases when there is nothing on the stack already. It doesn't mean that you can use it only when you otherwise have a sorcery you can cast.

1

OhaiChai knows whassup. Those rules are a little incomprehensible at times. When all else, check with Word of God, i.e. Gatherer.

That arcana is put on cards that would be completely imbalanced at instant speed. (like most creature/artifact abilities are by default). If it were instant, you could get around destruction/removal with it, or block, then before combat damage resolves feed it into the pod.

God that would be pretty tits though wouldn't it?

Hurm, if you want some cheap blue drops I think Riddlesmith would be more useful than Certarch. (or Kraken hatchlings) Putting cards into the GY isn't exactly tragic with the Ruins and Sheoldred coming out. Then again, I splash Black in my version of this, so discard is a lot sexier to me.

Augery Owl or Azure mage would also be great choices. I don't like that the Certarchs are useful for a tap ability (which means you have to chose between it and the architect tap.)

0
Posted 26 August 2011 at 02:18

The Certarch is REALLY good defensively, and it's the best blue one-drop outside of Kraken Hatchling. I getcha, though. If it was a mana ability instead, I'd be stoked.
