My first monoblack deck was a control deck back in the Mirrordin block and it was amazing. I loved it and the best part was that I put it together, I didn't copy any other deck build for it. I ended up pulling 2nd twice at the local FNM with it. This deck is your average monoblack build that you'll see in Theros but I've always wondered why no one runs Liliana. Maybe she crowds up the four drop or maybe there are better options to play but I want to try her out. I love that she filters the deck, can remove a threat or buff up a creature, and if you pop her you're set on mana for the rest of the game.
Underworld Connections and Liliana filter the deck out pretty well. Build up your devotion and then throw out Gray Merchant for massive lifegain/loss. Rat, Desecration, and Lifebane put decent pressure on the opponent as well. The sideboard is pretty standard. Pithing Needle, Erebos, and Duress come in against control but against aggro you'd get rid of Thoughtseize and add in more removal.
