Deck Description

This is my attempt at solving some of the problems I've noticed while playtesting typical Orzhov Midrange. Its greatest trouble is against hard control and burn, both of which are seeing a lot of play lately. Note that I haven't playtested this version yet, and I am concerned (even with mana confluece) about running a non-control deck in 3 colors without green for mana fixing. Suggestions are always appreciated.

How to Play

Against UW, Esper, or America control, a single Slaughter Games with Sphinx's Revelation named can disable them entirely, allowing you to play a long game that they can't win. Nyx-Fleece ram is to be switched in in four copies when against a burn deck in an attempt to better survive the early turns until you can get a lifegaining win condition out. In a match against more traditional aggro, it is supposed to win by merit of being a midrange deck that can play fat creatures.

Deck discussion for Orzhov Midrange (Red Splash)

I don't know if a play set mana confluence is correct here. The deck seems too slow to properly utilize it. I would suggest that you stick with the scry and shock lands. Mana Confluence is more geared towards decks that want to win in the first 5 turns or so (less if possible).

Yeah, I think you're right. With as much trouble as this deck has against burn, it could be self-destructive to open a hand with them. Thanks for the suggestion, just made changes. Any ideas about the creature list? I'm not sure I should be sideboarding all of my Blood Barons, but I'm worried to take out too many Archangels, particularly if the deck I'm against isn't in black or white.

Id take out one obzedat and one angel for the barons. If for nothing else, that the meta is heavy to black and white removal. Burn just wont be your friend either way as the angel and the baron have the same toughness.

I would also cut the slaughter games from the main and drop down to 2 elspeth, drop 1 connections and a downfall for 4 x 2 mana spell (lightning strike, doom blade, ultimate price, or even better devour flesh which can gain you some life against the burn decks).

Now that you mention it, I think I get where you're coming from. A deck running Rakdos's Return and 4 copies of Boros Charm is far more comfortable posturing as aggro than typical Orzhov Midrange or even Junk Midrange, so 6-mana planeswalkers and card draw need to show up less. The 2-mana removal is also important, and helps with that. I'm a little concerned about facing Azorius/America control in the first match without Slaughter Games or at least 3 Underworld Connections though, but hopefully the speed gained by a more aggressive playstyle will even that out. And Devour Flesh is exactly what I need against Boros Burn or other similar decks. I don't know why I didn't think of that. Thanks!

No problem. I am a control player myself (Im testing Junk, but I will most likely run Esper on Game day) so I do know what youre saying. If you have a lot of those types of decks in your meta, consider running a few duress (maybe -1 sin collector, -1 baron, -1 bile blight +3 duress...not sure on the bile blight though just seems tough for you to cast) in the side and just make sure you make the most of your thoughtseizes during game 1.

Just thought about brain magot too....that might be awesome in a lot of matchups. Id test that in the main in the place of demon. That might seem odd, but your top of the line creatures are way better that demon, so you really dont need it most of the time.

I understand your concern about Bile Blight. Its such a helpful card against Pack Rats that I sort of assumed it should be in there in some fashion. As far as Brain Maggot, its a really cool card, and I will almost certainly do some playtesting with it, that said, I'm nervous about removing my D-Demons in a lot of matchups, as in playtesting they have almost never been a draw I was unhappy to see. They can win games by themselves and give many aggro decks a lot of trouble simple by being huge.

True....but I would rather be playing better threats than demon. He gets locked out too easily by token producers like elspeth. That and he cycles soon
