Deck Description

As we all know, the current meta game is full with opportunity. I have had the chance to see many rouge decks fighting their way through Star City Opens and States. This being said, I have put together three decks I have had consistent success with. This is the first deck of three that I will be posting this week. This deck focuses on the control aspect of the meta. I originally structured this deck to mock the popular Solar Flare deck that has risen this past month. In this posting I will cover the main highlights I think really give this deck potential.

Starting with the life-gain; I main-boarded Timely, Engine and Batterskull as ways to live through early aggressive decks. This has proven time and time again to be the right choice. I don't fear the turn one Stromkirk Noble nearly as much on game one knowing I have 5 options to audible to in a search deck. Next is the infamous Sun Titan combo with Phantasmal Image. This is just a silly combo that keeps your field full of threats. Blade Splice also makes amazing target for Sun Titan's reanimate ability; which also happens to be great against the red match-up!

Next on topic are the planeswalkers. I'm sure you first thoughts are "WAH?!?!", but hear me out. Like I stated before, the decks that post the biggest threats are aggro and wolf run; therefore Gideon Jura becomes a god send in the proper moments of the game. He also makes an awesome beating stick against other control match-ups. Gideon's best friend of course is Venser! As my friends have found out, he is a STUD!!!!! In this re animator-Esq deck his +2 (flash) ability is extremely useful. Notable targets are Gideon, Sun Titan, Frost Titan, Oblivion Ring and my favorite Batterskull. May people, including myself, forget he has a -1 ability. USE IT! By the time you have Venser out for two turns you should have a decent board state and unblockable creatures can be a great finisher. And everyone knows that an emblem is VERY hard to comeback from.

Moving along to the spells. This is a control deck so the usual "F**K YOU" cards are present. I have found that dissipate is just stronger than leak in this deck. Mana leak is a useless counter late game when every opponent has ample mana options, where dissipate cancels all together. Dissipate's exile sub text isn't awful in the current meta either. I like doom blade over throat for a few reasons... the main being that their are many more targets with a blade, while the only threats it doesn't hit are Grave Titan and Wurmcoil. I added the throat for those pesky UB control decks that curve out with Grave Titan. Now comes the clunkiest part of the deck: Unburial Rites. Not sure if they should stay, but I wanted to keep it close to the Solar Flare Idea. It does help late game and since I'm only running two mainboard I don't have to live by it, like other Flare decks.

The sideboard is open to suggestions and ideas. I still think we have to let the meta settle itself before too much is decided for the board, but these are what I feel works for now.

Like all my decks prior I look forward to comments and suggestions. I will post the other two decks before the week is out.

Thanks guys and enjoy,

David

Deck discussion for Esper Flare Conrtol : Part One

Great main board. I feel like the sideboard could use some help. Trinket Mage into Nihil Bomb after an opponent's alchemy is pretty nice. I normally run surgical, but only because I hate getting leaked more than once. You should SB a Karn for late game trumps. I've never liked revoke because it's speed kills it. I'd swap at least one for a ratchet bomb to sit at a healthy number of counters till I want to blow it up. The curse is def to high cc. Add more DOJ if you're worried about creature heavy opposition. You could even splash heartless summoning in this deck and venser it out when you attack. Oh and spellskite instead of more counters in the SB. Gotta keep your fatties protected :)

I know you're trying to make this to "mock" Flare... but minus the your choice of a couple cards (Venser, Frosty), this IS Flare. The only cards you aren't running at all are Lili and Snapcaster. XD

Other than that, though... I like that you're being more straight forward with the deck. Flare is all about tricks and bringing stuff back cheap. I was ripped apart by a Flare deck running Elesh Norn this weekend, so I'm perfectly happy seeing one without her. XD

Agree with bdub. You need more DoJ. And do you want Blade Splicer competing for the 3-spot with Timely? I've made a similar build, minus Venser and plus some others... http://www.mtgvault.com/ViewDeck.aspx?DeckID=248790
