Deck discussion for Dimir Mill (Modern)

I like it!

Take a look at my page, especially the "current" decks.

This weekend I ranked number 29 out of 86 players in a legacy tournament!

I looked at some of your decks, especially design 7. Mesmeric Orb is just the best isn't it? I don't like Brain Freeze or Dream Twist just because there are better cards. They aren't terrible, though. I would definitely agree with Propoganda since it would help with Mesmeric Orb and helps defend a little bit better against aggro decks which I think is your weakest point. I also think that it is my deck's weakest point. I am using No Mercy instead, they both work. I also have more creatures and more mid-game spells. You could also use a few more of those. May i suggest Damnation or Control Magic (if you have any). Looks great though

COLBS35:

Legacy is very competitive, and about 66% of the meta has counterspells, making it very hard to play both removal and mill at the same time. Since if you do, they will just counter your most heavy mill-cards, and then you are left with removal, which won't win you the game. That's why I favor a "pure-mill" approach! (Which means I have 4-5 turns to mill away aggro!)

Mesmeric orb is a very good card, and there are very few decks that it is useless against, but I favor it for two other reasons, being
dreamtwist and darkblast!

Lategame my designs tend to run out of steam, and I suddenly have no cards to play. Dream twist buy's me some extra attempts, especially if I have mesmeric orb in play. If I get the orb, I constantly tap out during an opponents end, to get as many dream twists in the grave as possible. I have won several games just by getting 1-2 twists in the grave this way.

Darkblast is one of the only removalspells I would dare play against a deck with counterspells. It's dredge ability allows me to play it during my upkeep, then i can dredge it into my hand and recast it, effectively allowing me to make a critter -2/-2. And most importantly, when it dredges there is a slight chance for me to dredge dreamtwist into the grave as well.

This "flashback" setup works so well that I'm considering to add "increasing confusion" a lot!

Also think about my ranking! A 29'th place doesn't say much on it's own, unless you think in reverse. It means that 59 decks had a worser day than a milling deck had ;) And how many of these decks were actually know, archetypes with a lot of powerfull cards and thoughts put into them? A lot has to be the answer. Maybe about 1 third of them have been rogue or kiddie-decks, which still means that 40 classical decks fared worse than my mill...

Very true to all of your points. I like the flashback idea. That is why Increasing Confusion is sideboarded. But, I don't think I will be entering any tournaments with this deck sadly bc I do'nt think it is as good as yours and like you said, there are so many counterspells and just decks that are better in general. This is more of a play-with-friends type deck. I tagged it legacy bc that is what is legal in (besides vintage)

You are in luck, COLBS35

I have recently "discovered" leyline of singularity while searching for 3 sideboard cards for my modern mill.

The leyline will be valuable in legacy as well, because it seriously slows down creaturedecks, and that is something I have been searching for in a long time, and it's not likely to be countered :)

In modern it allmost cripples token-decks, give egg-decks a hell when they play second sunrise, and elfcombo will also suffer a lot.

Maybe you can use it too?
