Deck Description

This deck wasn't inspired by anything because it's a heavily modified version of the Commander 2014 Sworn to Darkness Deck. I bought this deck almost two years ago now and since I've bought it I have tried to make it the best Mono-Black Commander Deck it could possibly be! I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

How to Play

This deck works by slowly or quickly, depending on what you draw, building up mana and then overwhelming your opponents with an onslaught of flying Demons and an army of undead that you can sacrifice to activate various abilities. This deck is absolutely superb in multiplayer but it absolutely has No Mercy (wink, wink) in a 1v1 match.

There is actually only one key combo in this deck that I use to any real degree. This is a combo of my own creation, so before executing this truly marvelous card draw and mana ramp combo you'll need to be sure you have both Myriad Landscape and Ob Nixilis, the Fallen on the field. And in order to find the cards that are used in this combo, use my tutor cards, which are: Liliana Vess, Diabolic Tutor, and Increasing Ambition.

The combo works like this:

Step 1: Cast an Alhammarret's Archive

Step 2: Cast a Burnished Hart + Deathrender + Skullclamp to draw four cards first and then search for two basic lands. Depending on how you set this step up, playing Solemn Simulacrum, Sheoldred, the Whispering One, or some other really good creature for free with Deathrender is very good. This is also when you would then crack Myriad Landscape.

Step 3: Use the various regenerate cards that are abundant throughout the deck, which are: Dread Return, Sheoldred, the Whispering One, Victimize, Mikaeus, the Unhallowed, Profane Command, and Infernal Offering to repeat the process. Having Mikaeus, the Unhallowed on the field before cracking Burnished Hart is spectacular because you can bring it back again after it dies with Undying.

You can also use this same dynamic with Solemn Simulacrum. But the execution of the combo will be slightly different. Because, as with the aforementioned combo, you have to be specific with what you put on the stack or you won't get the full benefits of this combo.

Because Solemn Simulacrum doesn't have its own way to sacrifice itself; why not use him to build an Army of the Damned (wink, wink). After sacrificing Burnished Hart, attach Solemn Simulacrum to search for another land. Now attach Skullclamp and you'll have a 5/3 Solemn Simulacrum ready to make five Zombies over and over again with Ghoulcaller Gisa. I usually combine Deathrender + Mikaeus, the Unhallowed after this.

When your next turn arrives, with built up suspense, attaching Deathrender + Skullclamp to a Zombie and killing it with Victimize to bring in a free Sheoldred, the Whispering One, five more Zombies, and the potential to get the rest the your mana onto the field by implementing the Burnished Hart + Solemn Simulacrum combo combined with Mikaeus, the Unhallowed's Undying abilility is quite terrifying.

And having Reliquary Tower, Cabal Coffers, Magus of the Coffers, Crypt Ghast, and Nirkana Revenant on the field, you'll have a gigantic hand and far too much mana than you know what to do with, making you able to cast the deck literally without having to tap a single Swamp.

And once you get a sizable army of Zombies from the various cards that create the, which are: Army of the Damned, Ghoulcaller Gisa, Grave Titan, and Endless Army of the Dead, and Lashwrithe at a full 22 Swamps casting Cover of Darkness and naming Zombies is a surefire way of wiping out all of your opponents.

And that's it! A crash course in how to use my first ever Magic: The Gathering deck after first starting almost two years ago, is complete. I hope you enjoy using this deck as much as I do and discovering new ways to use it!
