Deck Description

Building credits: Dedwards, KJSJ3, Granflux, Zarlax13, Puschkin

Janky modern deck from Hell. Assuming you get a good opening hand, you can effectively win in the first few turns. Still annoyed that I never thought of this until now...

How to Play

Myr Retriever + Heartless Summoning + Altar of the Brood = Turn 2 deck out
Myr Retriever + Heartless Summoning + Bitter Ordeal = Turn 3 deck out

Deck discussion for Mono Black Gravestorm/Mill

Krark-Clan Ironworks is another way to loop the Retrievers.

I also suggest a form of search, as the combo requires 4 pieces, two of which are the same card (Myr Retriever).

Hopefully I won't need to use the ironworks but I'll keep it in sideboard for the moment. As for search tools, it's going to depend on if this deck is going to be legacy or modern. I would like to keep it modern, but I have six copies of enlightened tutor that are tempting me greatly...

If you do stick with Modern, don't forget Transmute. Heartless Summoning and Myr Retriever cost 2, which allows for 3 cards with Transmute: Dimir Infiltrator; Muddle the Mixture; and Shred Memory (all have uses other than Transmute too). I'm looking to aquire a set of Beseech the Queen for the build I'm working on. Also some creature retrieveal (ala Disentomb), maybe Corpse Churn as it's an instant, to 'protect' the combo from graveyard hate. Needless to say, I'm trying for mono black.

Same here if I can. I feel that this would hold up better in modern overall, and not having to splash other colors would be a good way to seriously cut on costs.

So I came across shadows of the past. It proves to be an incredibly useful tool with the myr/summoning combo, allowing me to consistently dig did not only bitter ordeal but also my pact of negation. It's going in as a four of. Add in a set of street wraith and I can scry until I find what I need and then cycle wraith to draw it for two life

Nice catch on Shadows of the Past. I didn't think of using the deaths beyond Falkenrath Noble. I would use Blood Artist, but Heartless Summoning kills it) and Pawn of Ulamog (for more creatures that die).

Searching for Bitter Ordeal is important. Dimir Machinations provides the same Transmute trick here. I also mentioned Beseech the Queen already, and there's always the classic Diabolic Tutor.

Maralen of the Mornsong could be useful too.

Also, Infernal Tutor can help fetch the second Myr Retriever.

Don't forget about gitaxian probe. While you can't use it at instant speed, it could let you know if you can do the combo without any interruptions.

Very true. I'll add some

If you're looking for stuff that you can just put in the graveyard right away, deaths shadow and memnite are solid. Wish I had a better suggestion than those because this is a very unique idea.

I actually had memnite in here for a bit but then I swapped it for sire. With heartless and shadows out a single sire effectively gets me two free scry 1 vs 1 from memnite. I do like deaths shadow but it's not that I'm trying to make all my stuff die immediately. I feel he would shine best in a deck using phyrexian unlife and melira to hit zero life and not die.

Ok so there's only a few free slots left now that the near if the deck is finished. Now I'm liking at removal to add. I'm torn between using outright destroy and -x/-x stuff. I've thrown a few in the sideboard for thoughts

Edit: forgot I had dismember in the main. Considering dredge and noxious revival now. Also, spellskite is free in here, so I'm keeping it as a sideboard staple

I recently had success with Mutilate in my Korlash deck. -1/-1 per swamp you control to all creatures is actually pretty great, especially against creature heavy / dependent strategies.

Knew I was missing a good one somewhere. Tossing in to look at it. Hoping my games don't run that long. Hoping to be able to combo off by turn 5 at the absolute latest. Current big worry is aggro since the deck starts off slow. Especially worried about Eldrazi aggro since this deck will make full use of us life to speed it along

Ok so for now it's "done". I'm not sure what to do about the land base. I'm not splashing for anything so I feel I would be okay with mostly swamps. I am considering boseiju though since my key cards fall into it's ability

Random thought. Altar of the brood.

The Altar would supply a nice alternative win.

Which one? Altar of the Brood or Altar of Dementia? Both work

Edit: Brood. The other one wouldn't work with heartless out. That's also even faster of a win than using bitter ordeal. Effectively it's a turn two deck out for my opponent. That's...pretty damn fucked up. Adding it!!!

Don't forget Surgical Extraction to get rid of those things that shuffle back automatically.

so this is pretty cool.
some more sac outlets for myr retriever is a good idea, and things like blood artist and zulaport cutthroat are other wins than ordeal. good list though

Zulaport Cutthroat and Blood Artist die to Heartless Summoning, that's why I suggested Falkenrath Noble.
I also suggested Krark-Clan Ironworks as you can loop Myr Retriever in the same way with it.

hmm I was thinking cutthroat was a 2/2r some reason... krakclan works well, good call

You guys realize that you need TWO Retrievers in order to male the combo work? It says "another artifact" ... and since your 3 card combo is essentially a 4 card combo, that probably means swapping some of the filler cards likes the Probe for things like Entomb.

Sorry if I burst a bubble ...

We know. Sadly, entomb is not modern legal. Any other ideas? (Thanks for the entomb reminder. Meant to get a few more.)

Modern ... blerch.
Spoils of the Vault - but when searching for the second Retriever this will kill you quite often I guess.
Only other option I can think of would be Infernal Tutor. At least to fetch the second Retriever, pretty much useless for anything else.

Whatever works. I'll find room for it. Spoils is a no go in this case. I use too much life to speed the deck along to do a large chunk like that
