Deck discussion for Decisions ... Decisions

Nice, I really like the theme. I tried to think about something to make this better while sticking with the theme, but nothing as of yet. Although, the cmc of a large number of your cards are quite high, and with only 22 lands, you may have a problem casting some of them. I suggest lowering the numbers of some of the 5+ mana cards to go up to 24 or 25 lands.

Ok, thanx, added land. I need lower cost creatures that fit the theme but I just can't find anything besides sin prodder. I don't want 12 3 cmc cards and can't make myself remove any blightning or browbeat. So if u do find or think of anything plz let me know. Thanx again

I've yet to come across something at the lower cmc's, but while sorting through some cards I found Archfiend of Depravity.

Definitely worth considering, but what to remove for it? Apparently I hadn't considered all the decisions I would have to make building the deck that forced my opponent to make difficult decisions. :)

On another note, thanks for all the likes guys and gals!

Was going through my cards looking for something when I found this:

Shivan Wumpus
{3}{R}
Creature - Beast
Trample
When Shivan Wumpus enters the battlefield, any player may sacrifice a land. If a player does, put Shivan Wumpus on top of its owner's library.
6/6

Kind of sucks that it can mess with your draws, but it does fit the theme of giving the opponent a choice.

I like it. Maybe more than Oracle. Would be interesting if sin prodded was in the deck as well.

That's brilliant. I didn't think of that. I'm so going to make a Sin Prodder deck with Shivan Wumpus... Wen I get back from WMCQ. Maybe even with Goblin Dark-Dwellers, depending on the spell selection.

Was going through my cards and I found Deep-Sea Kraken, which got me thinking, isn't there red and black Suspend cards that give the opponent options? After a quick search on Gatherer, I found these:

Pardic Dragon - the opponent gets the option to increase its Suspension time. Combo this with Eidolon of the Great Revel and he'll take damage for most of his spells, or you get a Dragon with Haste.
Nihilith - similar to the Dragon. Remember, playing nonpermanent spells results in cards going to graveyard. Same for permanents dying, which brings me to this one:
Curse of the Cabal - the opponent can sacrifice permanents to increase the Suspension time, and if he / she doesn't, they have to sacrifice half their permanents.

Crypt Ghast, Liliana of the Dark Realms, Braid of Fire, Vessel of Volatility, and the ever popular Rituals are all faster mana. Sure you have to trim down on your BIG threats, so perhaps Dark Petition as a tutor to help flood things out.

Also, http://www.mtgvault.com/rabidravingrabbit/decks/unless/ , is my Legacy version of the same thing. Maybe? Might try some of your ideas.

Not sure if I will use any of the mana ramp. Your legacy deck is awesome +1, all the life bidding is just sadistic. Forgot about temporal extortion and didn't even know about pains reward, which I can use in modern and might borrow. Thanx for the ideas and comment.

I feel you do have to lose the Blightning as it's unfair to not give your opponent the choice between discard and pain. Old school and expensive mana wise is Wand of Ith. But it has very nice art. I would also consider Magus of the Wheel. It will tempt opponent to empty hand asap, and subsequently you can just let him be. Or you get your new fill of annoying choices. I am actually just about to ditch the browbeats from my Taiga-Kird Ape deck myself, but this deck makes me reconsider. I like the mechanic a lot.

Although blightning, dreadbore, and bolt do not fit the theme, I feel they are the core cards in the deck. They are the little bit of early removal/control I need to make it to turn 4 or 5 in modern. I would love to find alternates that do fit the theme, but they aren't there or I just haven't found any. I like wand of ith, if it was modern, I would definitely try to fit it in. Thanx for your comment. I will have to check out your deck after I post this

I like the deck concept, pretty neat, hadn't considered that as a viable deck strategy. On the mana issues you mentioned, off the top of my head, here's what I've got as far as suggestions:
Jet Medallion/Ruby Medallion (it looks like black is the predominant color, so I would suggest that one)
Cabal Coffers
Crypt Ghast

I sort of feel like Phyrexian Obliterator fits the theme, but at 4 black requirement in a dual color deck, you might have issues getting him out. I just really like that card.

0
Posted 11 August 2016 at 07:44

Sadly the Medallions and Cabal Coffersare not Modern legal, and Droc420 wants to keep this Modern legal. Crypt Ghast is worth considering though, and it'd help a lot with casting Phyrexian Obliterator. If going heavy black, Temporal Extortion is worth considering too.

I like what you've done here. I agree with the above comments and changes you've made. I might consider adding 2 more fetchlands (1 for black, like verdant catacombs and 1 for red, like wooded foothills) based on your red/black devotion. Also, at least 1 Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth, so your Mountains can tap for black. Have you thought about making some room for Inquisition of Kozilek or Gatekeeper of Malakir? Good work! +1 from me!

so sad this deck is modern, because one of my favorite ''make a choice'' card is Blazing Salvo!
There is even an Hym to tourach style card: Skullscorch that can be pretty fun to play.
Other than that, I really love you deck pal! I also have a deck based on Vexing Devil but more focused on a reanimator styled deck.

Talking about Hymn to Tourach, we Modern players got something very close to it recently: Whispers of Emrakul. I highly doubt we'll ever get Hymn in Modern, so I'll gladly take as close as I can get. (I know we have Wrench Mind, but it lacks the randomness.)

This is the first time I've seen something like my theme decks on the front page. Nice. I'm a sucker for theme decks that really stick to it.

Personally, my favorite to add was Blood Seeker especially with a Tempt with Vengeance

That's a very helpful observation

0
Posted 26 August 2016 at 06:10

Main problem being that most of your critters cost 4 but none cost 2 or 3. The logical conclusion to fix that would be to add mana artifacts that cost 2. In this case probably Rakdos Signet or Mind Stone. That way, you can do something productive on turn 2 and play some of your 4 mana beasties on turn 3.

0

My advice is helpful. Modern is an extremely fast format right now that destroys decks that are slow. My advice would be to atleast play some police cards in these colors so your strategy can go off. Otherwise you do nothing against tier 1-2 strats most games.

Its a theme deck (sort of) and certainly not meant to be played in tournaments.

This is just the sort of red/black deck I was looking to build. I love the evil choices theme. Since I'm just a kitchen-table-with-friends player, I don't need to worry about tournaments. I just want to make my friends curse my name, and this has some great options.

Vexing devil Brutal card turn one power o 4

0

Usually it's turn one power 0 because the opponent just pays the life.

0

either way a power 4 creature on field or auto 4 damage turn one sounds good to me!!

0
Posted 08 December 2016 at 03:42

Not really because it's opponents choice! If you have a Lightning Bolt in starting hand, do you fling it at opponent's face? No, you wait for something to destroy. In this case, you cast the Devil, the opponent decides to take the damage and then casts a creature on his own. Now you lost initiative. It doesn't matter much that he is down to 16 until his life become 0. Until then it's a buffer he can make use of while establishing board control.

He has his place in a few decks but is nowhere near as good as it seems.

In "normal" decks, I'd agree with Pushkin, but the whole point of this deck was giving the opponent a choice between bad and worse (for the opponent), so Vexing Devil fits pretty good here.
