Throw away the key.

Main Deck (60 cards)

Sideboard (0 cards)

No sideboard found.

The owner of this deck hasn't added a sideboard, they probably should...

Submit a list of cards below to bulk import them all into your sideboard. Post one card per line using a format like "4x Birds of Paradise" or "1 Blaze", you can even enter just the card name by itself like "Wrath of God" for single cards.

Deck Description

My first take at a prison deck. It's taken some tweaks since the original build, but so far, I enjoy this a LOT. I think meekstone is rather weak, but it helps against zoo and some of the faster decks. Suggestions?

I chose to throw in jace for the board control he gives. He can bounce away dudes that will re-enter tapped with orb of dreams. and winter orb also limits their landbase. (: Not sure if I'm doing this right, so all help is welcomed. (:
Also jace is the main win-con for this deck. He's just soooo good. Board control for dayssssss.
Bitterblossom is another win con. And surprisingly good against aggro.

originally threw in a tarbernacle, but then realized HOLY COW, THATS 200-300 BUCKS! and decided to take it out... this deck is supposed to be budget, as far as legacy goes. The fetch-lands are really the only expensive part.

P.s. I like esper, so what.

Deck discussion for Throw away the key.

For issues of redundancy I'd take out a Jace for a second Crucible. It improves your base speed to stabilize when you have a Crucible online, especially with Wasteland, and it allows a more gentle margin for play error(read: wrong time to play Armageddon).

I enjoy control like this, and used to make them all the time, just never in these colours... Might have to remedy that eventually, but right now I'm looking into goofing off with Pox again :D

The deck is pretty solid, but I don't think a black splash for ONE Bitterblossom is really worth it. I usually use it as an excuse to run Bloodghast as a finisher, generally as a trio, or discard. It's really amazing what a play set of Thoughtseize can do for your game.

hmm... didn't notice the only black card I had was bitterblossom.. LOL in the original build there were damnations alongside thoughtseizes, but I ended up taking them out.

I don't feel adding black hurts the landbase at all. Esper is so solid. Also black gives me access to leyline of the void post-board. But the more i think about it, the more I think I don't need leyline. Dredge will never get around double ghostly pirson, and reanimator will have a hard time, too.

I don't feel I have room for any thoughtseize... unless you see some, lol.
But going just w/u wouldn't be all too bad. (: then maybe I could add mishra's.

And 2nd crucible is a good call, but I feel going below 4 jace is... too slow. And I know that's weird in a prison deck, but I want to make sure I see them asap, lol. I'll cut a meekstone. I can tutor them :)

thanks :'D

Tried to think of something to deal with the problems, came up with nothing that hasn't already been mentioned. Listening to Moby is clouding my perception right now, and how his music can make me like even Gwen Stefani.

Alright, I showed this deck to my buddy Arty. As the builder of Alcatraz, owner of a $13,000 deck, and the only person to defeat every one of the "7 Decks"...I figured he'd be able to help =P

Hello Mr. Lewis,

I hope that the following advice presented to you will live up to 'surewhynot' (as you know him) waxing poetic about my talents. Enough about my so called 'résumé' though. On to the advice. I have prepared a list containing the various aspects of your deck that I believe are worth a mention, either due to being a hindrance, or due to being something which should be built upon.

/1. The most glaring mistake is your inclusion of Bitterblossom. It is an error on your part for two reasons. Below I will list those reasons.

//1a. Excuse my harsh words, but to splash a color for a single card, useful or otherwise, is simply an asinine choice. It seems to me this fault was largely an innocent mistake, but it is a flaw all the same, and to not address it would be an even greater flaw.

//1b. The true artistry behind 'Prison', as it is known, is to prevent your opponent from achieving anything tangible whatsoever. In order to accomplish this feat, you must at times hinder yourself as well, all the while maximizing any loopholes to hider yourself to a lesser degree. It should come as no surprise that a culmination of these tenets fosters long, drawn out games. Bitterblossom has little application in a deck that should expect prolonged games.

/2. If you truly require a full playset of Jace, the Mindsculpter in order to maintain dominant board control, then quite frankly, you have no more than a control deck and not a true 'Prison'. If you honestly must have it in, then a maximum of two, while in my opinion is still superfluous, is tolerable. I implore you not to use a full playset though. To do so places you into the same cavalcade of mediocrity that plagued Standard right up until its banishment.

/3. You could very easily divide Brainstorm in half. In its place, two copies of Counterbalance and, likewise, two copies of Sensei's Divining Top (commonly referred to as 'CounterTop') will achieve much the same, while introducing another angle of control.

/4. I see little reason to use Armageddon in the main deck, especially at such high quantities. It may function well on occasion in your side board, but otherwise, it is a hindrance.

/5. Grand Arbiter Augustin IV is, in my humble opinion, nigh irreplaceable in white-blue 'Prison'. It does not, by any means, require an entire deck centered on just it. In fact, such an effort would most likely have sub-par results.

/6. The dead horse be beaten, Fatespinner is an excellent inclusion.

Well, it seems that is the current limit of my advice at this time. Should you choose to continue pursuing Esper in this case, then I am certain referencing 'Alcatraz' should provide ample inspiration. I must give our friend his laptop back at this time, he is being quite the pest and I truly have had it for a considerably long duration. I am hopeful that my time was worth your while, I believe it was worth mine. Until next time, I bid thee adieu.

Woah, thank you a lot for taking the time to view this deck as in-depth as you did!

I agree, bitterblossom should go. Originally I had splashed for different control elements, but ended up removing them because that's what they were.. "control" not so much prison.

I use jace as a win condition. It may not be very prison-like, but it's a win condition that also aids in controlling the board. Once I have a lock, with a prison/propaganda followed by an amageddon he just always goes up. (and going up is also really great to protect him, as well. seeing what's in their hand)

I use armageddon in the main because of it's synergy with ghostly prison and propaganda. Alongside my crucible it's proven fairly useful. I am open to suggestions though, as always. (:

Grand arbiter augustin IV, never knew this card existed.. thanks! I'll be sure to include him.

Fatespinner is a card I love dearly, and am honestly surprised I forgot him o.o

It really shows you took the time here to offer some true advice, and I am greatly thankful. I may not update this deck right away, but I assure you it will be updated.
Thank you, a lot. (:

hahaha, probably not too highly.

I think jace is a great card. regardless of how people look down upon him, he's a great card.
I'm not going to not use a card just because some people think there are alternative options. There are, indeed more options, but jace is an option himself...

If I have a board lock, and jtms hits, I just fateseal them out of the game... it might not be very prison-like, but it works. lol.

Hi EthanLewis,

Nice beginning of a deck, but currently it's at 56 cards. Is there any reason you've left off 4 cards?
