Deck Description

Based on Melon57's Apostle EDH deck.

I've made some tweaks. Added some lands, swapped a few demons out for different ones, and added a few other cards that were a little less budget than he was going for. However, there have been a good number of releases, as Melon57's was posted before Theros, even, and thus I figured it'd be good to get some input now that there are new cards out there to use.

This is my current EDH deck and its pretty legit. But, new cards. New perspective.

I'd love to hear what people have to suggest.

Deck discussion for EDH-Shadowborn Apostle

IMO Cabal Coffers is just to absurdly good in mono-black to not run Vesuva and Thespian's Stage to copy it and Expedition Map to find Coffers or a copy land if you don't draw them. I've never been like "F*ck yes, glad I topdecked that Leechridden Swamp or Barren Moor!'" but I've certainly giggled gleefully pulling a way to copy my already-OP Coffers.

Black Market is pretty absurd in a Shadowborn deck, too.

IMO short of a Nekusar deck I'm not a fan of Seizan. The last thing I want to do is give out six free cards to the table for every two I draw . . . assuming I even get to draw them. Too often when I ran him someone else just takes the free Sign in Blood off him before killing him and I wind up getting nothing out of the deal.

Hm... You're absolutely right about all of that. I do have some vesuva's lying around, as well as some thespian stages, so Ill toss them in. The Seizan could be replaced with expedition map, of which I have plenty as well, but he's a hit or miss like you say. We play a lot of team-based EDH so, it helps my allies as well. I'll have to see how I feel about it.

add urborg, tomb of yawgmoth and some tutors would be good

I don't think the Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth would help me that much, being its already monoblack. My Shadowborn Apostles basically tutor all my demons! (:

urborg will turn all your non basic lands into swamps and it works great with cabal coffers. id use tutors to find cabal coffers or thrumming stone or 1 of your other artifact/ enchantments

I suppose that is true. I'll certainly consider adding it.

So, add things like...

Demonic Tutor
Diabolic Intent
Diabolic Tutor
Increasing Ambition

Oooh. That is a nice one for EDH.

It's Diabolic Revelation, though. ^.^

you are correct. on a side note, i was distressed when i saw 25 copies of card in a deck (especially edh) until i read the rules text.

The Shadowborn apostle is so nice! Especially since when it dies it triggers a ton of effects across all my other cards. :P

So, thanks to your suggestions, snuck in a Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth, an Increasing Ambition (because I already have one and it does have the potential to be played twice), a Planar Portal because of its re-usable card searching capabilities, and a Diabolic Revelations, because it can tutor a bunch of stuff at one time. ^.^

*Thumb's up!*

maybe want to add some cards like, ob nixilis, the fallen, hythonia the cruel, in garruks wake, gray merchant, and mogis's mauler

Ob Nixilis, the Fallen was in my list for a while, but I ended up swapping him out for something else. I had even considered Hythonia the Cruel, but due to her lack of demon properties she's a little trickier to get out, and I'd prefer to not destroy all creatures, because that destroys all mine, including Shirei and can wreck my field.

Board wipes aren't as important to this deck, because it can force people to sacrifice their creatures, or bypass their defenses entirely. Gray Merchant is usually neat, but I think I have more benefit out of my other creatures.

Your suggestion is good. I've considered most in the past. ^.^

ok, thanks. if it doesnt work out with your deck, its ok. those cards just work out with most of my decks. thats why i thought it would work with yours too.

I completely agree. I took out Ob Nixilis the fallen because I didnt feel that damaging on the library search would be as useful, especially since there are more useful demons for me to summon early on, so hed end up not as useful. Gray Merchant is a card I really do like, but... Idk.

Good suggestions, though. :)

One thing to at least ponder if you find yourself having problems with the deck is to change from Sherei to Athreos for the commander. You really don't need to alter much besides some lands to get white, and maybe slotting in Edgewalker and Remembrance, but at least for me I had a lot better luck once I made that move. Athreos is a lot harder to get rid of and works just as well IMO.

0

Its something I'll have to play around with.

It'd probably be less effective in my EDH meta, because half the players have large health gaining decks, so... They could just sacrifice life to eliminate my creatures under Athreos and disrupt everything without having to worry, really.

0

For me the problem was it becomes obvious that the deck kinda falls apart without Sherei, so people would just make sure to hold a removal spell. Athreos made that a lot harder, and it opened up some other really effective cards in white. HOWEVER you might not find youself having the issues I did depending on your meta, so it might be a non-ssue. I just thought I'd mention it as an option, as is Sekkuar, Deathkeeper.

0

Absolutely true. While some people might find Shirei to be my primary card to use to make my deck function, anything short of counterspells will be ineffective, since I'll probably just tutor out one of my protective artifacts to keep him safe.

I'm not sure if this will remain as my primary EDH deck, anyway, as I have another I just built that is probably far more competitive. I'd actually be somewhat afraid to play against it.

If Champion's Helm is primarily going to be used to protect your commander then I'd run Swiftfoot Boots instead. 4 to equip is a lot and you probably won't be able to equip the turn it comes into play, where as Boots cost 1 to equip which makes it a lot easier to get them on ASAP.

urborg, tomb of yawgmoth isnt that good in this deck since it is mono black, unless, you want it for your duel lands, if mana screwed

urborg is great in here it turns all her non basics into swamps and works great with cabal coffers

1

vaan is correct. It's mostly so I can use it with Cabal Coffers. Normally, it wouldn't be useful, but since coffers gives mana based on how many swamps I control, Urborg becomes more useful.

Maybe Crypt Incursion?
It stops reanimator decks.
Plus...the stronger creatures that are not affected by Caretaker will be removed.

Not really good with Edh advice.

Ah. Crypt Incursion is a good idea. I'll have to see if I can get my hands on one.

0

Yes, crypt incursion is a really good card, also an under-rated common. I have that in my green black deck. i gained 27 life once, because of crypt incursion.

volrath's stronghold might be another good land and eater of hope is another demon to look at. I also run whip of erebos in any deck that has black. whip has won me many games

0

Eater of hope is a good one, yes. I'll have to see if I can get my hands on one. Whip can be useful in certain decks. I don't know if I'd put one in here, because I don't /really/ want to exile my creatures from my graveyard. :P

Reliable and powerful. Has won basically every match its been in, even in hands of people unfamiliar with the deck. To me, that spells success!
