Deck Description

You know, at first glance, Glitterfang is pretty terrible. But! But but but! There are so many possibilities. Consider it with Door of Destinies. Or with any of the "Whenever you play a Spirit or Arcane spell" cards. It gets fun.

Deck discussion for Glitterfang

This looks like a really fun deck to play. heres some suggestions.
I would take out Scourge of the Noblilis for Cloudstone Curio. the curio would help play your one mana spirit spells more frequently on the same turn, adding more ki counters for your other spirits. I would also think about replacing Figure of Destiny for another one mana spirit creature, so that you have plenty of one mana spirits, but you'll have to playtest that to see if it's neccessary.

I'm really liking the Cloudstone! Very nice suggestion!

I didn't really see anything really worth throwing in for red and/or white spirit 1 drops. Figure may not trigger the casting and coming into abilities, but he does gain ALL of the potential buffs for 1 extra mana, red or white. He's a handy little tool to spend my spare mana on.

Maybe, but I'm not sure that I'd every really find time to play it, considering that I'll be replaying my one mana drops all over the place, every turn.

I know what you mean, but if you could just take a few mana and throw that in, you would be dealing a ton of extra damage every turn! If you're casting a 1/1 spirit per 1 mana, you'd be hitting with an automatic 3 damage each turn afterwards (at least) for only missing one turn of spirit launching. I think it's a good idea, but It does come down to you in the end lol. Another card that might be fun is scrambleverse, if you can throw out the mana. You wouldn't have to worry about someone getting your spirits, because they'd just go back to your hand anyway. Meanwhile, you could get a bunch of your opponents stuff!

This deck should totally make the front page. It has INSANE potential. I know there are LOADS of cards out there that would make this deck ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE... but I can't think of any right now :/

Oh! I know one! I would take out scourge of the Nobilis and replace it with Captive Flame. If you really do want to base this deck around Glitterfang, auras won't do a lot for you. Captive Flame would let Glitterfang get his bonus for that turn, and then, even after he goes back to your hand, the enchantment stays. Or you could use an equipment, like maybe Basilisk's collar? One of the Swords? Just something cheap to equip. Maybe even a whispersilk cloak.

0

Hmm, I'll sideboard Captive Flame. It is a very nice card. Not too keen on the Equipments for this deck, though I can see the advantage.

Another idea I have... maybe Jor Kadeen? If you get Door of Destinies and Cloudstone Curio out, his metalcraft should be activated, so he would give your spirits some added bonuses.

For Jor I'm going to have to say no. I have enough other buffs that don't require me to have 3 of my artifacts out.

This is just a thought, but what would you think about including sun titan? He would be able to pull your guys out of the graveyard should anything happen to them. You could have an army of very temporary spirits! XD

0
Posted 19 August 2011 at 05:41

Well, I sideboarded Sun Titan, Warstorm Surge, and Scrambleverse for big multiplayer fights where late game would be a strong possibility, and also where they would all be much more effective. My creatures are more likely to die in multiplayer(Sun Titan), I need to do more damage to more targets(Warstorm), and I'd have more stuff to steal and mess up with Scrambleverse.

Awesome creature buffer might make it better, such as AGRUS KOS WOJEK VETERAN!!!!! no he isn't a spirit or arcan, but he will make your glitter fang a 3/1 with haste and what not, not counting all the other buffs, I'm not very good at magic, but I do think you might want to look into this card =)

Grafted Wargear + Glitterfang = +4/+3 equip for free. When Wargear resolves from the stack, Glitterfang is no longer in play, its in your hand.

In the Web of War + Glitterfang = Glitterfang comes into play with a +2/+0

Death Match + Glitterfang = Glitterfang comes into play target creature gets -3/-3

Long-Forgotten Gohei + Glitterfang = Glitterfang comes into play with +1/+1

Ronin Warclub + Glitterfang = +2/+1 equip for free.

Shuko + Glitterfang = +1/+0 equip for free.

Door of Destinies + Glitterfang = Glitterfang comes into play with +1/+1

Nothing quite like an 11/6 Hast for one red comming into play and a potential blocker getting -3/-3. :)

does the deck need some removal ? red and white has great stuff, bolts swords ect id be hard pushed not to add some.

adaptive automation could be nice in here with the door of destinys they get boosted by the automation and the door !.

+2 Cloudstone Curios

It has been brought to my attention that I don't have enough removal. So, though it's not real removal, bouncing there stuff every turn seems like it should be satisfactory for this deck's purposes. So I upped the count on my Curios. Didn't even change the mana curve.

i understand how the clouds can bounce your own stuff and yes thats very nice increasing your spirit numbers, i appologise if i'm missing something (prob a combo with another card) but they only let you bounce your own stuff as far as i can see (like i say its prob me and i'm missing something so please point this out to me) but how do you bounce there stuff back, i agree if you are doing this it makes up for removal

oh, well we all do that sometimes, i guess, red whire really does have some great removal and would add to this very good build. your choice of course, this deck will still prob overpower most decks with whats on the board and i think the extra clouds and bouncing will help your decks function, however there are always things that need to be removed, it just seems strange not to add any when your playing such good colours for removal thats all, still very good deck.nothing worse than being shut down by a single card and having no way of shifting it.

Its an awesome concept, unfortunately it might be lacking in mid game, you could start out fast and take out quite a bit of health, but after turn 3 the other player could have out some blockers that would negate the damage, nice thing about glitterfang is essentially it cant die, or wont stay dead. I would pop in some Storm effects in, Storm Entity could wreck shop pretty fast here as well

0
Posted 04 September 2011 at 18:28

Actually forgot about Storm. Really, where this deck dies down for a moment in my head is turns 3 and four, if I get Cloudstone and Door by then. But, If I have both of those and at least 2 one mana drop spirits, I can get Door up to +4 on turn 5. I'll check out some storm though.

How about adding 4 Eternal Dragon and 2 Karmic Guide?
Dragons would be used to get more lands for 2 and come to play when you play karmic guide. Before you have to echo karmic guide, you bounce back to your hand with Cloudstone Curio and you can pick up all your dragons / big costly cards that you plainscycled or that your opponent killed?

0
Posted 07 September 2011 at 08:18

Also how about removing 4 Arid Mesa and replace by 2 Reflecting Pool and 2 Maze of Ith? That way you could mitigate some of the damage the opponent could do to you on third / fourth turn (weak point). Reflecting pools would copy the Plateau if possible or plains / mountains.

0
Posted 07 September 2011 at 08:22

Also, what would you think about adding 4 Mother of Runes? I know they are not spirits but treat them as spell cards for their effects. They can give protection of the color of your choice to your creatures in case your opponent try to cast a removal spell of any kind. You can also use the Mother of Runes offensively to remove any enchant creature card. For example, if your opponent casts a blue enchant creature on his white creature. You give his white creature protection of blue and he needs to remove the card.

0
Posted 07 September 2011 at 08:26

Mother of Runes could be great in here. That extra protection is awesome, and at the very least your opponent would 'waste' some removal on it.

0
Posted 08 September 2011 at 00:22

Your suggestions are nice and all, but they're way too expensive, Mother of Runes aside. The entire point of Arid Mesa isn't necessarily to get the right type of land, that's just a bonus. It's to get lands out of the deck so that I'm more likely to draw other, more important things. The dragon is just impractical for this deck because you will probably never actually be casting it, which means it won't trigger ANY of the effects this deck is built around, Balefire Liege, Door of Destinies, Oyobi. It'll only activate Cloudstone Curio, which I can activate with pretty much anything else.

At 7 mana, Oyobi will almost never get casted especially if you are removing lands in your deck with Arid Mesa. You will get stuff other than lands and the last two lands may take way too long to get.

You can see the Eternal Dragon as an Arid Mesa kind-of. It will remove a land from your deck when you plainscycle it for 2 lands tapped instead of losing 1 life but it will be reused with Karmic guide. Karmic Guide will syphon your graveyard every single turn +trigger and your opponent will be pissed about using his removals to kill the mother of runes instead of killing the glitterfangs.

Also consider the critters (Glitterfangs and Frostlings) are vulnerable to various removals. So far, you want to protect your artifacts with 4 rebuff the wicked but that may not be enough. Mother of runes is essential to make the spirit shenanigan continue the whole game and bypass opponent defenses.

As for price, you are right my suggestions are expensive but the Glitterfang deck proposed is already expensive with cards like Plateau notably. Ok the duals are staples but Maze of Iths would also be considered staples considering they will most likely always keep increasing in value overtime.

0
Posted 08 September 2011 at 22:34

By price I meant mana cost. I don't plan on buying this deck any time soon. I have a total of $0 dollars right now. Anyways, Your combo is reusable. For an extra 5 mana a pop that I'm going to need to be spending on recasting my little guys, not to mention that it would require me to remove 8 cards to get it with any consistency, albeit Karmic Guide is wholly unnecessary unless I have the ten mana to do it twice in a turn, or unless I'd like to do it 1 turn early . And you're right, I probably won't get Oyobi out in most games, which is why there are only two. Arid Mesa's value for this deck is much higher than the dragon, considering that it puts it IN PLAY, untapped, and speed is of the essence. The argument that those last two lands are going to be hard to find is generally invalid, because it would be the same thing if I had just drawn the lands, not to mention the fact the mountains are significantly more valuable than plains.

I understand, my little guys are vulnerable, and I probably will sideboard the Mother of Runes, when I decide what to take out.

Hey guys, I just had a great idea. What would you think about having:
+1 Cunning Bandit
+4 Scorched Rusalka
-4 Frostlings

Scorched Rusalka is a 1/1 red spirit you can bounce like the Frostlings. When you flip Cunning Bandit, you use your ki counter to gain control of your enemy creature and you sacrifice your opponent creature with Rusalka to damage him for 1 life. LOL That would be priceless, right? Since you have two ki counters on Cunning Bandit, it is basically like two terrors but cheaper and it does 1dmg! A terror is two black mana. Scorched Rusalka costs one red mana to cast and one red mana for this ability. Also you don't need to tap Scorched Rusalka at all! This means if you have two Cunning Bandit flipped, you can "terror" two of your opponent creatures PER TURN! This has insane potential!

With the Cunning Bandit + Rusalka combo, we found the most potent removal method that exploits the spirit mechanics. Lightning Helix should just be used offensively to burn most of the time.

Maybe another suggestion would be to sideboard 4 disenchants? Depending on who the opponent is (artifact heavy decks), it could be useful to destroy their mechanics with that simple spell.

At this point, since we have 4 cunning bandits, you should drop the # of faithful squires and drop kami of last hope in the sideboard. This will free up space for mother of runes and more cards.

The only part we disagree is how to deal with the high creatures.I would see it this way:
4 Figure of Destiny + 2 Oyobi vs. 4 Eternal Dragon + 2 Karmic
You know what, I will creature both versions and give it a shot. I will let you know which is more useful.

I really love this deck which is why I'm trying to offer as many suggestions as possible. In fact, I like it so much I am currently building it. I already have most of the cards, I should be done by next week. :).

This is my version called "Glitterfang Legacy":

MAIN DECK
4 Balefire Liege
4 Cunning Bandit
2 Eternal Dragon
4 Glitterfang
2 Karmic Guide
4 Mother of Runes
4 Scorched Rusalka
Creatures [24]

4 Cloudstone Curio
4 Door of Destinies
4 Lightning Helix
4 Rebuff the Wicked
Spells [16]

2 Maze of Ith
4 Mountain
4 Plains
4 Plateau
2 Reflecting Pool
4 Sacred Foundry
Lands [20]

SIDEBOARD
4 Disenchant
4 Figure of Destiny
4 Glory of Warfare
2 Oyobi, Who Split the Heavens
1 Pandemonium

I got a question:
Do you think 4 Cloudstone Curio is too much? In the sense that if you draw one, all the others will be useless because you only need one for the effect. In that case, do you think it would be better to only have 2 + 2 Enlightened Tutor? Tutor could help pick up as well a Door of Destinies in the worst case.

I played a few times with this deck and Door of Destinies I find way too slow to play. It would be awesome if it only costed 2 to cast but 4 is too much and by that time I'm about to die or I am in a weak position. I like the new card Curse of the Stalked Prey which does +1/+1 for every damage to the opponent for only 2 to cast, it won't work with glitterfang but still better with a deck using something like bitterblossom.

0
Posted 05 October 2011 at 04:43

Erm, Bitterblossom just, well, it doesn't fit. The deck was designed to break Glitterfang. The Door is in there for later game. Not early. Early game you should be playing your little guys that stay in play and setting up for the Glitterfang combos. Disenchant if they rely on artifacts and/or Enchants, Rebuff if they're removal heavy, Helix as your own removal, or just to keep them down and you up. I'm curious to know what you were facing. For instance, this deck would be just terrible against super early game decks, like infect. However, it has some advantages that you may or may not have been utilizing. Such as the Rusalka if they have smaller creatures or tramplers. I mean seriously, where are things really going wrong? There is more to the deck than the Door. It just happens to utilize Glitterfang to it's fullest combat capabilities.

0
Posted 05 October 2011 at 23:30

Okay let's put it this way: the other decks I played against were more efficient with cards that do more for less. I never was able to do the rusalka + cunning bandit combo ever. They would always end up removing either quickly. There is no mana ramp and no draw engine so by turn 3-4 I am in deep trouble as I am already top decking while my opponent is doing all kinds of crazy things. I think the idea of glitttefang is innovative but getting curio + doors out and bouncing creatures is very mana intensive. I will play it more because it is a fun deck but I would rate it a tier 2.5 deck. It is not competitive. I got owned with someone using 4 wastelands in his deck and being out out of mana too.

I see what you're saying with the draw engine and it not being competitive, but what would I use for draw/ramp? As for Rusalka, it's not just for the Cunning Bandit combo, it's also for, for 1 mana, dealing damage to them or their creatures whenever they try removal or attack/block with a bigger creature. It may only be 1 damage, but it's still something.

But seriously, anyone, if you can think of a good draw engine that would still fit in the deck, please, let me know.

I just want you to know that this deck gave me the inspiration for my own spirit deck. I don't know how it would stack up against yours, but I would love it if you'd give it a peek some time. Thanks.
