Deck Description

A fast-paced Gruul Beatdown deck. Hoping to make this my standard deck for the next year, so I'm making it use only m13 and Ravnica cards so that I don't have to worry about innistrad cycling and ruining things.

Spire tracer is fantastic one-drop evasion and the perfect creature to cast bloodrush or rancor on. Pyrewild shaman is fantastic reusable buff for late game, and this deck pumps out creatures so you should always be able to hit for something. Elvish visionary and zhur-taa are their for fluency and hand-size--this deck has a tendency to use entire hand by turn 3 or 4. Savageborn hydra is also fantastic--tossing a rancor or bloodrush on it is just crazy good. Borborygmos and Thundermaw are bosses for late game.

****DISCUSSION QUESTIONS****
- What about Alpha Authority? I know it's hoping for a lot to put rancor on a "flyer" and expecting them to live, as well as putting the hydra out there. Thoughts?
- Domri, anyone? This deck definitely has the means to keep him alive.

UPDATE (4/29/2013)
Swapped Zhur-Taa Druid in for Gatecreeper Vine. Seems to give the best of both worlds and trumps gatecreeper and farseek--gets me the extra mana in play without having to sacrifice a blocker. Also started a sideboard of the Ancient, Naturalize, Gruul Charm, and Skullcrack (against extort decks).

UPDATE (5/5/2013)
I bought this deck, although I'm still short a few stomping grounds and a crag. also have proxied in Hellrider for Thundermaw, and I'm not sure which I like better. Here are my observations.
1. Pyrewild is only okay. Too expensive to sync with the tempo of the deck. Probably will drop down to 2 and swap in some flinthoof boars.
2. 22 Mana is too much. Dropped a forest to bring to 21. May even take out more if Zhur-Taa druids consistently do their job well.
3. I just don't like ground assault much. For one, I don't like that it's a sorcery, and I think searing spear is more versatile.
4. Everything else plays in nicely, especially with your suggestions. Zhur-Taa helps me get the hydra way bigger way faster.

UPDATE (5/8/2013)
Currently thinking against splashing black. Would be way too costly to buy all the shock lands, and I'd really only be splashing for one card. There are good enough red and green cards to fill the holes in this deck. Dropped a legion, pyrewild, savageborn and all ground assaults. Added in Gruul War Chant and 4 Flinthoof Boars. Seems to work well so far.

SPLASHING OPTIONS:
Blue - Gives me Elgaud Shieldmate to give the buffed creatures hexproof.
Black - Gives me Rakdos' Return for Direct Damage + Discard. Would probably swap with Ground Assault.
White - Boros Reckoner. Probably not as likely, both budgetwise and manawise, but it's still a consideration. Could also splash just for Boros Charm.

UPDATE (5/28/2013)
Finalized deck so far and added sideboard. Comments and suggestions appreciated!

How to Play

ALWAYS MULLIGAN IF YOU HAVE LESS THAN TWO LANDS IN YOUR OPENING HAND.

Turn 1: Always play first. Drop a spire tracer or legion loyalist. Swing with the legion if you can.
Turn 2: Most staples of this deck can be played on turn two. Burning Tree emissary is first priority, then Elvish Visionary or Zhur-Taa Druid if your hand. Or you can drop another one drop or put a rancor down.
Turn 3: Same as Turn 2. Keep popping stuff out.
Turn 4: Now would be a good time to think about playing the Hydra, especially if you have good board control. You can always mana dump later to pump it up, and bloodrush might just be all the buffs you need. Will also draw away removal from the tracer and loyalist.

Keep hitting them hard. Ramp up to Borborygmos if the game goes on too long, and Thundermaw is a great finisher too. Just keep hitting and play aggressive.

Deck discussion for Burning-Tree Beatdown

I would say Farseek over Gatecreeper imo because it can get Stomping Grounds into play which can speed up your land count. Plus if you Have emissary you can get a Creature and 2 land into play that turn [ 1 for turn and 1 from farseek] to put you at 4 mana on T3.

I had thought about farseek, and i'm still going back and forth. On the one hand, the extra land on the field is nice, but gatecreeper is a good blocker and makes me less worried about tapping out. I'm going to proxy this with farseek and with gatecreeper and see how both play out.

Thanks for the comment!

I'd use experiment one instead of spire tracer, and try to fit in 4 flinthoof boar. Also, skullcrack isnt necessary, clan defiance would be way better. Even mugging.

Flinthoof boar just doesn't seem very mana-efficient. Sure, potentially 3/3 for 2 mana is good, but if you're going to give it haste it's going to cost you 3, which is just average PT return.

Experiment one is a great card, but doesn't give near the evasion that spire tracer does. Granted the evolve mechanic is fantastic, I think that the creatures in this deck aren't consistently big enough to evolve it, and it's not worth giving up evasion for.

As for Skullcrack, It's really just there for a mana dump and there to take out life-gain/extort decks. It can probably be sideboarded. I'll swap in clan defiance.

Thanks!

Put madcap skills. Turn 1 play spire tracer. Turn two burning emissary and mad caps on spire tracer. Do quick damage everytime

Madcap skills is good, but for one extra mana over rancor it gives an extra +1/+0 and doesn't give trample, not to mention it doesn't have the failsafe of always coming back to my hand. And its second ability doesn't really do much since spire tracer has minor evasion anyway.

You should add "Zhur-Taa Druid" to side to change with "Gatecreeper vine". Since you'll go lower on lands when you put "Zhur-Taa Druid" put "Skullcrack" instead of "Ground Assault". Then you can swap "Borborygmos Enraged" with "Zhur-Taa Ancient" so you can use your lands even better.
Since this deck runs on creatures, add "Domri Rade" or "Garruk, Primal Hunter" to help your creatures and overall get the upper hand.

Flesh and blood might be better than ground assault, considering it can hit a player and can do crazy damage if the hydra gets strong enough or if you get out tmaw or borbor. Also, imagine turn 5: bloodrush ghor clan rampager on a 4/2 hydra with rancor, then blood for a total of 24 trample/burn damage

That's an interesting idea. I like blood more so than flesh. It could definitely get some synergy--more with borborygmos than the hydra though. The only thing I don't care for so much is that it doesn't synergize with the double-strike very well. I dont' quite see the point of flesh, though. If I wanted to take this in a scavenge approach, I could add in varolz for much cheaper than flesh, and it's more permanent.

I'll play around with the blood idea. Thanks for the comment!

No problem! Yeah I don't even run black but I still use flesh and blood just for blood. The way they balanced the split cards was by making one side really good but the other side overcosted for what it does. Here, blood is obviously the good ability and flesh will only be used rarely.

Alright, so the deck here is the official current version of the deck. I've begun to see that Hellrider is easily the best card in here, and I should probably get more copies. I can't see myself losing the game as long as Hellrider stays alive. I also officially made the sideboard and I could really use some help. In my playtesting, I've found that this deck usually outruns most everything but control (specifically supreme verdict) and some faster junk rites. So those were the decks I sideboarded against most. Here are my thoughts:

Grafdigger's Cage - There is a lot of ammunition against a lot of decks with grafdigger's cage. Effectively takes out flashback, snapcaster, undying, and reanimation all in a single card. It also helps that its an artifact and pretty hard to kill with black and white. The one mana cost is pretty good as well since most of this deck's action happens on turn two. Overall great choice against junk rites and flashback IMO.

Ancient Grudge - I can't really think of an archetype that's artifact heavy, but I have 2 there for the day that I find one.

Gruul Charm - Just like ancient grudge, I have no idea when I would use this, but I'm glad to have it. The third ability might be nice to clear a way for spire tracer early game--other than that I don't think it really hard counters anything in the format too much. Maybe cloudfin raptor?

Skullcrack - The perfect shutdown for sphinx's revelation. Mainly there against azorius control.

Gruul Keyrune - One of the only things in this deck that would survive a supreme verdict. Also there against azorius control.

Wolfir Avenger - Would also usually survive a supreme verdict. Flash is fun against aggro, and regeneration is pretty good for removal as well. Not sure about how well the three mana will fit into the curve though... although, then again, flinthoof boar is usually three mana anyway.

Well, that's my sideboard. Thoughts and suggestions appreciated!
