Deck Description

These vampires are truly bloodthirsty, excelling in frenzied combat. They even take on the color of that which they seek!

How to Play

This deck is part of my new "off-color" series, featuring well-known tribes from Magic's history, with a big twist: they're NOT in their traditional color.

Vampires have a long history in Magic, and almost always in black. Other than the red/black Vampiric Dragon WAY back in the day, it wasn't until 2005's original Ravnica brought us the blue/black Szadek and Moroii that Vampires appeared in any other color at all, and only the blue/red/black Garza Zol (Coldsnap) and Blood Tyrant (Conflux) used any color but black...and all still had black mana in the cost.

Then came Innistrad. Suddenly, red vampires were everywhere. Not just red/black Vampires, but solid red. This deck features many of them, and while splashing in black would allow for some awesome heavy hitters, I opted to go mono colored for this one, for flavor.

And mono red is still plenty potent. Their "theme" is dealing damage and getting +1/+1 counters as a reward. Almost every creature here gets that benefit, and Rakish Heir doubles it up. Hammer of Purphoros gives them all haste so you can really punish the opponent if they leave an open field in front of them, and Vampiric Fury gives them serious combat advantage when they ARE blocked. Crossway Vampire, Madcap Skills, and Smoldering Spires also help clear the way for getting those counters, and Ordeal of Purphoros (which can trigger the same turn you play it if you slap it on a Vampire that's already gotten in some combat damage!) and Blade of the Bloodchief add even more counters.

And then? Ion Storm the opponent and their creatures to death. Lightning Bolt can combine with it for a sudden win.

What do you think? If you like this unusual color concept, check out my other Off-Color decks, including white Elves, green Goblins, blue Zombies, and Vampires' biggest rival--Humans--in the Vampires' traditional black! (Just go into my Profile and click on the "Off-Color" tag to see the rest.)
