Deck Description

The name kind of says it all: get an Island on your opponent's side of the board and literally walk all over them with your islandwalking Merfolk.

How to Play

If your opponent doesn't have an Island on their own, use Aquitect's Will, Spreading Seas, or Streambed Aquitects to force one on them. Then land a Master of the Pear Trident and turn your Merfolk army into an unblockable nightmare for the opponent...while racking up other benefits from Scroll Thief, Stolen Identity, and if you're especially lucky, Wanderwine Prophets.

Since your Merfolk will be turning sideways to attack a whole lot, Merrow Commerce can then ensure they're still available if you need defense.

Master of the Pearl Trident is obviously great here, but perhaps a "Lord" that may see more utility early on (or if your islandwalking strategy just isn't working out somehow) is Merfolk Sovereign, who can simply go for the jugular by making creatures unblockable with no strings attached. Copy either of them with the repeatable Cackling Counterpart and/or Shapesharer (who happens to act as a Merfolk even when not copying).

Some additional help can be found in the sideboard, with counters specific to certain opposing gameplans (and even some potential feteching with Muddle the Mixture). If you end up going counter-heavy, Talrand, Sky Summoner can reap you some additional benefits (and works equally well with key card Aquitect's Will). Thada Adel can help if artifacts are a particular problem. Harbor Serpent and Stormtide Leviathan can bring some major, islandwalking muscle if you need it.

Perhaps one of the best parts about this deck is the price tag. It's not a true "budget" deck, mostly because of Cavern of Souls, but it's certainly not something you have to sell your soul to acquire either, even from scratch! Take out the Caverns and this thing is yours for like $30.

That's about it! Tried to build something akin to this deck in Standard, but it's really best when you have more control over forcing your opponent to have an Island...whether they want it or not! Mwaha.

Deck discussion for Walking On Water

nice i wouldve prefered adaptive automiton in here somewhere but it looks pretty solid for what it is perhaps a coralhelm commander and some aether vials turn it into an aggressive tempo deck, in anycase mind checking out my walking dead deck
