Deck discussion for The Bolas Effect

What is the top end of what your willing to spend on individual cards for your budget? If it fits you probably are going to want fatal push in over tyrant's scorn. Lightning bolt may go well in also. If its in budget you could run damnation, or if that is to much I tend to be a fan of anger of the gods. Liliana, the last hope could be a good option but may be to high in price. I would start by looking at those but it really does depend on what you consider budget because of what the different views some people have on it.

Fatal push at least in my opinion is pretty much just better tyrants scorn so I would put in as many as you would want of the tyrants scorn. Its pretty popular though so the price is about $8 a piece.

You may want to look into a play set of lightning bolts. It is a good removal spell and good burn also with chandra's triumph only dealing five if chandra is out it will be a cheaper removal spell. Also if you are looking to win with chandra/bolas you might want to look into opt and remand. I am a fan of both since remand can slow an opponent down while cycling and opt is a good cantrip.
Also what do you think of tasigur? If you are going to have cheap spells and cantrips you may be able to get him down early and it could be a good engine.

I personally like 4 opts and I normally run 4 remands but I can see why 4 remands may not go in all decks. I also agree with rzm4hf fog bank is a really good budget card to stall the game for your walkers.

Rzm4hf also talked about putting in counters, what are some good counters?

Or will the 4 remands be good

Unfortunately modern counter spells are just not as good as in other formats because of the speed. Logic knot is a pretty good one because of the delve allowing you to use it almost like OG counter spell and it exiles so it can take care of any snapcaster targets or recurring threats. If your meta runs a lot of two drops than you may want to look into spell snare. Its really good in the right spot but pretty situational luckily modern is fast enough that most decks run at least a couple to several two drops. Negate and dispel are solid options but they will normally come in from the sideboard. Essence scatter is a good option if you meta is incredibly creature based because it just gets rid of the creature but is dead in hand in the wrong match. You could look into mana leak as well I ran that a lot when looking for budget counter spells.

I think it looks pretty spicy so far. Only having the one of chandra and bolas is a bit of a shame but the tutors to go get them are a good fix for it. It looks like it will turn out to be a good time to play.

Alright now time to add land, how much of each you reccommend

That depends on what duals you have if any. Do you have any fetches or shocks? If not what fast lands, pain lands, or check lands? Do you have any tap lands/guildgates?

Um, im actually not sure what lands I have, if anything, I could just buy more

That could pretty much go anywhere. Obviously not building around Nicol or Chandra since you only have 1 of each. Luckily they both are pretty versatile so they will compliment most decks. So you need to decide what you wanna do with this deck. Is it a control aggro or mid range deck? So far you have a bunch of removal, so whats your win condition? Creatures? What Kind? Zombies? are you going for Amass? Whats it going to be fighting primarily, casual multiplayer or 1v1? Start with narrowing down your creature base

1v1 mainly

I wanna have buff creatures but also I wanna try to keep the board clear as much as I can while trying to get bolas out

Ok but your going to need a different main win condition than bolas cuz you only have 1. Dread horde invasion is good cuz it is a repetitive threat that keeps coming back. Put at least a couple of those in and they can win you the game. Fog bank is a great card to keep you alive I'd put 4. Definitely put a playset of lightning bolts in. A couple fatal push might be a good idea but tyrant's scorn is great too I don't agree that it is a straight swap. Put some diabolic tutors in so you can find your bolas or removal in a tight spot. Some counter spells would be a good idea to protect your stuff, but also you need board wipes to clean up the turn before you bolas. Blasphemous act is great. If your gonna run Vraska's finisher the new tibalt goes well with her, generates devils to block or attack and then pings something for death.

Also, i dont think I should add blasphemous act only because it cost so much and i feel thats more for commander

Blasphemous act cost just 5 mana if there's 4 creatures out, between yours and theres it will often cost less. Board clears are important. Honestly, after a second look at tibalt I don't think he's worth it unless you have a way to get his counters back up like proliferate, even still probably not. I originally thought he created two devils per activation.

Maybe it's just me but I don't get why remand is a good card, obviously it's just me cuz it costs 6 bucks apiece. I'd cut those for negates, you have plenty of creature removal so negate would do the trick. Then you can use those savings to buy 4 baleful strix. That card will be supremely useful in this deck, unfortunately they're like 7.50 a pop.

Opt isn't really worth it to me, cards that only draw 1 aren't card advantage since they are simply replacing themself. That being said there are still a few reasons to run them a) cast triggers, something else in your deck benefits off you casting stuff, but thats not the case b) deck thinning, since they replace them self it's almost like you your running 56 cards in your deck, This is helpful especially since the scry effect is benificial. However, theres just better cards that do this if your not trying to make this standard/modern/legacy legal. Take advantage of the cheap price of ponder! You can get them for less than 2 bucks since they are banned in modern, and they let you go 4 cards deep to look for the card you need.

As for lands I'd run 22, your gonna want half basics, and half multicolored lands. As for which ones you should run, thats really up to how much you want to spend. Land can get stupid expensive. Crumbling Necropolis is a cheap way to get all three colors, I'd grab four of those. Now some of the best lands for their value are dragonskull summit, drowned catacomb, sulfur falls. They're still a few bucks apiece but you will always need land So I reccomend never trading it away. I'd put 4 drowned catacomb in cuz blue and black are most important to you and 2 of each of the other two. Or some variation of that, idk exactly what the final build will look like.

But cheers and good luck
