CATCH!

by msv4 on 03 April 2017

Main Deck (60 cards)

Sideboard (17 cards)

Creatures (6)

Sorceries (6)

Submit a list of cards below to bulk import them all into your sideboard. Post one card per line using a format like "4x Birds of Paradise" or "1 Blaze", you can even enter just the card name by itself like "Wrath of God" for single cards.

Deck Description

Nothing is more satisfying that yelling "CATCH!" and throwing a lava axe at your opponents face for the win.

My friend told me Lava Axe was a bad card, so I built this deck revolving around Lava Axe to prove him wrong!

Pro Tip:
The whole deck will be foil for added humiliation, so I am trying to keep the cards reasonably priced.

Spread the word, Lava Axe is a GOOD card!

My friend has decided to create a foil Thieving Magpie deck to combat against this deck, so the Sideboard is aimed at finding a way though a deck of nothing but counters and card draw.

How to Play

The basic idea is
Turn 1: Faithless Looting is the best turn 1 play, should mulligan if you can't play, Faithless Looting, Lava Spike, or Rift Bolt.
Turn 2: Pyromancers Ascension
Turn 3-4: Burn opponent's face / cycle cards with Faithless Looting and Cathartic Reunion.
(Idea is to get counters on Pyromancers Ascension and a Lava Axe in the graveyard as well as in hand)
Turn 5: Throw a Lava Axe at the opponents face for 10 damage.
(Don't forget to yell "CATCH!")

It is possible to do enough damage to kill your opponent by turn 4 without Lava Axe; but where's the fun in that!?

Deck discussion for CATCH!

I would suggest Nissa's Pilgrimage instead of Peregrination.

Good call, will help thin the deck out quicker!

Artillerize, Beacon of Destruction, Brimstone Volley, Thunderous Wrath and Unstable Footing are all inexpensive cards you should look at.

Have you thought about creature based mana ramp?

Arbor Elf + Utopia Sprawl generates a lot of mana very quickly (4 usable mana on turn two). Only problem is Utopia Sprawl has a pretty price tag ($4 normal, $13 foil) [so glad I got my set when they first came out].

Another two card, lots of mana 'combo' I'm personally wanting to try out is Viridian Joiner + Umbral Mantle. But again, one of the two (Umbral Mantle in this case) is pricy ($5 normal, $10 foil). A fun part about this combo is you can use Fling on Viridian Joiner once it's big enough.

Another three card combo is to have both Orochi Leafcaller and Sachi, Daughter of Seshiro out and enchant either with Freed from the Real.

Another route that I like is defenders. You wish to win with big burn spells, so a bunch of defenders isn't working against your gameplan. Overgrown Battlement and Axebane Guardian both tap for an amount of mana equal to the number of defenders you control. And depending on how heavy green you go, Traproot Kami makes for a great turn one play.

joraga treespeaker is best creature ramp. run 4x harmonize to draw cards. cut all creatures you are running now, there are better cards that ramp you more and probably cost less. sakura tribe elder, for example. (also a combo with your caravan vigil). id also cut fireball. lightning axe is a good card so is flame slash.

CATCH!

Well, Lava Axe IS a bad card, but I appreciate the effort to troll your friend :)

Then again, is ramping mana really the way to go? All that does is emphasizing that the more flexible X-spells are better than Lava Axe. The one and only quality about Lava Axe is that it deals 5 damage when you have exactly 5 mana. If you have more, there are better options. And even then you'd be better of playing with Beacon of Destruction ...

What's next, are you going to say Storm Crow is a bad card too!?

Ramping mana probably isn't the best way to go, but I believe it probably is the cheapest way to go. There are lots of good suggestions here though!

Well ... you could, you know, play with NATURAL BALANCE !!!
That way you are always on 5 mana where Lava Axe is King :D
Maybe even in full combo with Squandered Resources.

The other option would be to figure out the amount of lands needed to assure you have 5 on turn 5 and fill the rest of the deck with cheaper direct damage that, played in turn 1-4, deals accumulated 15 damage so Lava Axe will be the natural killer on turn 5. But that's a lot of math, so maybe stick to what you have or Natural Balance.

Another idea:

Imprint Lava Axe on Panoptic Mirror. Then use Paradox Haze to speed up the clock.

Or

Imprint it and any Retrace sorcery (like Flame Jab) onto Spellweaver Helix.

I know they're probably not budget options, buy they would be fun to pull off.

I like that thinking. You could also also discard it through Pyromancy to deal the final damage (where it does more damage than a Lightning Bolt or X-Spell would^^.
