Deck discussion for U/B control (no jace/ no titans)

Wow, where do i start.
Why would you put skithyrix in there if your not running infect,and also id deffintly take out Inquisition for a duress.I would also through some creeping tar pits in there .And last, you only have 4, high mana creatures in there, sure you can hold then off for a little while, but if they do manage to get ride of them, your fucked.|

I agree with the previous post, your creatures are all wrong. Cryptologist suggests a U/B Mill deck, it's useless in control. 6cc Sphinx? Two issues, any other deck besides another slow control will kill you or have you so crippled that you scoop by the 5th turn. The second issue is, say you do get it out, it's not as if it can block 5 enemies by itsself. While I love Skithy, and use him in my U/B control/infect deck, he's not too useful here if he has no support. It too comes out far too late for any real use against any form of burn or agro. If you're going for infect here's what I'd suggest:
Cryptologist = Necropede
Sphinx = Plague Stinger
Skithy = Keep him if you want infect to be your end game.
Cancel
Doom Blade
Grasp of Darkness = While removal is good this doesn't take care of everything, I'd suggest Negate instead.
Into the Roil = If you ever actually kick this card you should be doing something else with that mana.
Mana Leak
Spell Pierce
Haunting Echoes = Good stuff, I need a couple of these.
Inquisition of Kozilek = I'd keep that over duress, duress's great limitation is not being able to get rid of creatures.

I think ultimately that either picking infect or what I think you are actually about, milling/discard, will really focus this deck and make it more playable.

kozilek does rock; it's staying MB
haunting echo's is dropped
into the roll has a cc of 3, regress is at 4; it's there in case someone gets an enchantment/ artifact/ walker past me and onto the board; i doubt i will ever use the kicker.
-4 -4 will take down most non-finishing indestructible's; the thing I do not like about it is the B(B) casting cost.
crypto's stay; the crazy card draws with multiples out rock and really help keep everything locked down.

I chose creatures based on their evasion abilities. skithy has built in regen while the sphinx has built in shroud; both have flying. granted after they come out it's still another 3 or 4 turns till game and they do not work together. I would run just 4 skithy's but i only have 2 atm and i need a back up in case someone is running grasp of darkness also. the cryptologist's guys give a massive card advantage once they come online and have a small casting/ leveling cost; they also tend to work as bait for removal that pops up on the draw. I pulled out haunting echo's; in testing today it turns out that it's a really bad idea to drop it on turn 5 since it weeds out all the smaller creatures in a deck leaving an opponent with large creatures and higher mana cost spells right when they can start using them. I changed around the side board and added perish the thought for a anti-planes walker card; memrocide cripples combo decks and the other side board stuff is very situational, smother is there for a vamps match up since it makes doom blade a dead card.

I see what you're saying with the evasion but yeah in my opinion, there just isn't a cohesive theme there. I had to work on my U/B deck for a while and I still am. U/B isn't good enough in standard at the moment but I have high hopes for the new tezzret in the next set to change that.

If you're not about standard then Ponder is so much better than the cryptologist early game, it's not a permanent though. 1 blue for top 3 look, one draw or shuffle, draw. it's gross.

If you have a Mimic Vat or two that could really help.

I completely disagree that u/b isnt good in standard right now. you can check my u/b decklist. it does quite well, lol.

mimic vat, as good as it seems, is a draw back.
it SEEMS good, up until you draw it, without a creature, then just think "oh, damn.. that would have made for a nice sphinx right now."

i say ditch both skithys, add 2 more sphinx, get 2 mistifying maze, ditch 2 darkslick, add 4 tar pit and either get some tectonic edges or some spreading seas. you'll need them.
id round it to 2 duress, 2 inquisition. just because. lol

some jace belerens for draw power are sweet.
and i know this sounds funny, but you have WAY too much counter. plus 4 negates.. suck. i'd rather a deprive, even with the draw back.

your absolutely right about the mimic vat; in a creature light control deck it becomes part of a 2 card combo. the odds of having a vat and a creature worth using it with are very low in this situation and it becomes dead weight in a deck. In order to make it work tutor would have to be dropped in at 4 of and more high cost creatures would need to be added; that's a bad idea since your messing with the odds of getting the control cards that are needed for defense. Statistically combo's can work only in situations where that 4 of center piece amplifies the effectiveness of everything else or where multiple interactions can make the combo go off such as card A and B; or card A and C; or card C and B

You could always use terramorphic expanse, no where near as good but they're super cheap commons.

removed the sphinx's and added stingers; I think I may add the 2011 core jace's in place of the cryptologist's since baby jace only goes for ten bucks and offers a much more reliable base for card draws.

alright, so, more tips. lol
in a control deck, you will definitely need 24 land.
if you look at the decks that won 2010 worlds, they all ran 26. so 24 is definitely needed.

you have 11 counter spells. thats a lot. i'd drop 4 cancel, make stoic 2, and have 4 mana leak.
this way you can add 2 more land, and get 4 spreading seas :D

id ditch grasp of darkness, too. just run 4 doom blades. they're faster and just better, lol.

id also ditch perish the thought.

BUT, CREATURES; you will definitely want to go all out infect. and the best way to do this; just play creatures. i know, sounds weird, but hear me out;
you have a hand of the praetors on the field, and play an ichor rats. they now get 2 poison counters, all because you played a creature. thats one fifth of your job done, in the means of getting them to 10 poison counters.

so, all together, this is what i'd do;
- 4 cancel
- 3 grasp of darkness
- 2 stoic rebuttle,
- 2 perish the thought
- 3 into the roil
- 2 diabolic tutor (even though it'll seek out a card, it just screams "hey, i have something good in my hand! in control, you should be able to stall long enought to draw the anyway)
andd -1 island and swamp.

total taken out; 18

and i'd add;
1 mana leak
4 preordain
4 creeping tar pit (making your landbase 24)
4 hand of the praetors
4 ichor rats.
and 1 spreading seas.

putting in 18 more cards. (:

if i think of anything else, ill let you know.
and sorry i wrote you a novel, lol
