Deck Description

Just building a standard deck for FNM and fun games. I really like the way the devotion mechanic works so I started with that and worked from there. I'm looking for help with building the side board and the main deck.

Any additions must be standard. Your help is much appreciated.

How to Play

Early game is all about stalling, creatures are expendable to a degree as they can be brought back with rescue from the underworld and the whip, I personally save this for the Merchants though as two hitting the field late game can be devastating.

Liliana helps with mana and thinning out your deck. Also she feeds corrupt, which I have found people don't often prepare for.

Erebos just had to be in there, helps with card advantage. The whip is great for life link and again bringing cards with devotion back to get those last hits in before they are gone for good.

Lots of fun to play with, be prepared to let attackers through and play towards those mid to late game winners.

N.B. Thank you to anyone who has commented. The deck has been vastly improved, I'm very happy with where it is at. Just need to play test and pick up my most recent additions.

Deck discussion for Erebos Devotion

Wow this is a cheap deck for FNM. All of the other decks on mtgvault going for FNM are $250+ , although I don't think you need all of that money to make a good deck. Not sure about all of these cards, also I wouldn't have one offs in a deck, there's not much point of adding cards if their will be only one of them. Small chance of drawing one offs, but then that's just my preference. For a deck like this, if possible, add as many cards like dark prophecy to this deck, devotion can get crazy high with cards like that and make a game winning combo with stuff like abhorrent overlord. A card I would add to this deck would be grim return. Great card, especially since it isn't targeting just your creatures. Other than that, great deck, especially for its price. Good luck In FNM!

Re: the one off cards I do agree. I am building with what I own and have been fortunate to pull these from boosters and feel if I do draw them they could be a massive help. I have 4 Diabolic tutors do you think I should main deck or sideboard them to pull those one drop? Re: Grim Return I can trade for them easily enough so will definitely add them. We have a new store just starting so we're all just starting out at FNM only a few long term players down there.

If I were you I would take out mind rot and shrieking affliction for 4 diabolic tutor and the quag sicknesses for either two more doom blades or 2 hero's downfalls, same mana cost but you know that the creature will be destroyed, even the choice of planeswalkers which are in a lot of decks at the moment. Also you may need to add cards to target agent of the fates to use it to its full effectiveness, otherwise you should probably take it out.

I have played with 4 Doom Blades. The Quag Sickness works well for me as I can deal with black creatures and indestructible with them. I do maindeck my downfall for planeswalkers. I do decently with mind rot, disciple of Phenax and shrieking affliction if anything I was considering more discard. Perhaps I can Sideboard these for Tutors as I somewhat you're saying about the one drops.
Re: the agent I can target him with rescue from the underworld and March of the returned, as far as i'm aware both trigger his heroic. Catches people off guard. Thanks a lot for your feed back. I will definitely play test your suggestions.

there isnt much indestructible in standard, though, and so you could possibly sideboard both doom blade and quag sickness for 4 hero's downfall, and mix and match according to decks you are versing. The only indestructible being used in current standard decks is the 5 gods and fleecemane lion, so again you could swap out cards for quag sickness in your sideboard. also, i looked up the rules, and unfortunately heroic is only usable while the creature is on the battlefield, so using march of the returned will not trigger agent of the fates. With the discarding cards, i would only be using a fair amount with shrieking affliction, or i would take all of the discard out, leaving you room for other cards. i understand that you want to keep those cards in, but if you are you should add 2 more mind rots and 2 more disciple of phenaxs so shrieking afflictions abiility will be more effective. and i would definately add that dark prophecy from your sideboard to your main deck, and get 2 more if possible. Very effective for this style of deck.

Added in dark prophecy, disciple and mind rot (bumped to 4). Added Ordeal of Erebos to sideboard and moved agent of the fates there too. Can add the Markers, agents and ordeal to main for the buff from heroic and possible extra discard. Death Touch is always good too. I have found read the bones is helping with my draw lot and may be over doing it with 4 Tutors so lowered to 2. Grim Return has been a great addition thanks for the heads up on that.

Also considering removing the staffs. But they do help me if I get a bit reckless when using my life to pay for spells. What do you think? Will play test without and see how it fares.

the staffs arent great cards, but it is always nice to have them in your sideboard just incase. this deck is definately looking great now, but the sanguine bond may not be best for the deck. You only have 5 cards for lifegain, and also snaguine bond is quite late game for what its ability is. i would either take it out or add more lifegain, maybe corrupt or even daagerdrone imp. both of those cards would work well with liliana, and could get you up to high amount of life reasonably early. if you dont want to add more lifegain, i would personally take out sanguine bond and add something like another abhorrent overlord. But maybe not, you could also try testing with these ideas if you wanted.

wow this deck price has risen fast. are you going to get those thoughtsiezes?

It has indeed I have been fortunate with a couple of my boosters and have done some savvy trading. Have one Thoughtseize from a booster have a trade set for two more. Ebayed the specters before their price peaked insanely, I knew it looked like a good card it seems everyone else clicked at the same time lol. So far this has been built on a much tighter budget than the price would suggest. If It is almost impossible to pick up the last Thoughtseize I will be happy with a duress. I am looking forward to running it at FNM, got some great players who are helping me improve my game.

Corrupt is quite costly have you thought about replacing it with Dark Betrayal for dealing with opposing black creatures? At least maybe in the sideboard, I don't think you will have to worry much about indestructable creatures as you should have plenty of chump blockers with the amount of Harpy tokens you can produce. Also a couple of Underworld Connections will help with card draw and devotion.

I have chopped and changed both ways, I even took it out once and the deck felt worse off for it. With Liliana churning out lands Corrupt has single handedly won me games. Because it deals damage and doesn't drain life it can deal with plainswalkers, creatures or my opponents. This deck is all about late game big hits on your opponents life total. It is costly mana wise, but I rarely struggle with mana. I think corrupt is one of the idiosyncracies of this deck and a lot of people don't see it coming. A lot of people think I only have the Merchants for the life bombs. Corrupt gives me a back up plan for board wipes. I often do sideboard it against aggro though.

Can't argue with those results lol :) Any reason for favouring the Shredfreak in the sideboard, would a Lifebane Zombie not have more impact?

Shred-Freaks are only in there because I owned them and I thought they fit the devotion theme nicely. I must admit they don't often hang around for too long to make a huge difference as I play them very aggressively. I can't believe Lifebane Zombie never entered my head and I play against G, W or G/W a lot. +1 for the advice. I don't think I'll need 4 though and I am prepared to drop all the Shred Freaks. Maybe 2 Lifebane 2 Ratchet Bomb? I have seen Ratchet Bomb played and it is a board wipe I currently don't have.

Ratchet bomb will certainly help against G/W decks and all those damn Wurm tokens they can produce! 2 of each would be a good fit. Means your sideboard will have an answer to both aetherling and token decks. If G/W crops up a lot may be worthwhile main decking the Zombie :)

Both in the SB. Will be able to get the Ratchet Bombs today easily. No one running lifebane zombies at my local store hopefully that means people have them and are open for trading them. Will mull over my deck and see where I could squeeze the zombies in. Thanks again for finding that glaring omission in my deck. I'm almost ashamed of myself lol.
