Seconding this. Thromok is probably the best Gruul legendary creature and I want to see 'Northy' make a deck for him.

If your plan is to kill Child of Alara to trigger the ability it must enter the graveyard to do so. If you choose to put Child of Alara in the command zone it actually doesn't trigger the ability since putting your commander to the command zone is a 'replacement effect', thus Child of Alara never actually "died" (entered the graveyard). So yeah, you might want to run some reanimation in order to use the ability.
