Deck Description

Id like to start off by pointing out that this is my first extraction deck ever, so no haters :P

That being said, please help lol.

So right now the main focus is clearly extracting with some nice U/B control thrown in to keep my opponent at bay. Then my win conditions are based off of the Ghastlord smacking them down to size (supported by blue control and black discard to keep him alive), Quest for the Nihil Stone combined with some discard that also acts as lockdown, or a potential mill win (mostly in the sideboard).

Help and comments would be very much appreciated as I'd like to start trading out some of my newer mythics (including a foil Chandra =D ) to build this. Thanks :)

I've been toiling quite a bit with extraction, but haven't built anything yet to actually play with. So my experience is limited to second hand knowledge and advice. Also, if you don't mind, check out my modern extractor, called subTraction :) It's on the first page of my profile.

One thing I do know is that extraction relies extensively on stall to slow the opponent from gaining any battlefield advantage before extraction can neuter their deck (Rishadan Port, Trinisphere, etc.) I think Echo Mage will be too slow to accomplish this -- you'll have spent an additional nine mana before you copy your first spell (casting cost 1UU, level up twice 2UU, copy the spell UU, for a total of 3UUUUUU). He is an exceptionally good and fun card to play in casual, but for competition he should be left at home.

IMO, your extractors are too dependent upon graveyard removal. I would drop Surgical Extraction for Praetor's Grasp, Sadistic Sacrament, or Memoricide or the likes.

Regarding discard, drop Cry of Contrition for Thoughtseize. It is hands down the best discard spell along with Hymn, though Hymn is not modern legal :( Also, cards printed in expansion sets (like Commander) are not legal in Modern unless they were also printed in a Modern legal set. I'm talking about Riddlekeeper. Dropping Riddlekeeper, I'd suggest either 1 more Iso and Thoughtseize, or if you like Sadistic Sacrament, a Panoptic Mirror and Thoughtseize. The latter isn't as competitive as it just is fun :) You can pay Sacrament's kicker cost as you copy the spell for free.

Really, I think Joe's idea of combining Thoughtpicker Witch and Bitterblossom is the best place to begin with modern extraction. Milltraction might work as well, using Haunting Echoes as a slower bomb in place of Bitterbomb.

Wow bro. i REALLY appreciate your input on this one a ton. My biggest concern in building a modern deck was actually just not knowing a lot of cards that were legal... Thus, this kind of comment was exactly what I was looking for =D I've already thrown in several of the cards you listed as they are all very competent. As for the Bitterblossom Thoughtpicker combo, I really like it and will probably end up using it in another deck, it just seems like this deck isnt the place to neccessarily to drop it. Thanks though :)

check out my extraction deck, not modern (idk wat any of that stuff is... i just know the names, standard and casual lol) i think you need to put life's finale in maindeck, it is really good and prolly will save u a lot (unless creatures have haste) i also suggest taking out gitaxian probe for 2 dark rituals or more memorcides my opinion and also i dont know anything about modern (rules and the like)

i have made a extract deck too, although its not all that i think.
i went with a mill format instead that way i get the pick of cards in their graveyard and surgical extraction to get rid at any time. mine ahs also taken a turn for controll as i felt i needed some in to keep it in check.
one good creature i do reccomend though is circu, dimir lobotomist very good in a extract deck.
check out my deck if you get a chance as i need some imput my self
