Deck Description

Pretty inexperienced (make that very...) at making EDH decks, but I saw this card and thought it'd be a neat commander.

I own about 50% of the cards, so want some advice before I make any crazy purchases!

Advice VERY much appreciated and needed :)

EDIT: updated lands, spells & removed creatures on recommendation of morgoth424. Thanks for the advice!

How to Play

Get Kaalia out and protect her while she swings. Pretty self-explanitory. Tutor for situational cards.

Deck discussion for Kaalia of the Vast EDH

Interesting build. The thing about EDH is that most cards which are great normally like incinerate and dark ritual are terrible as one ofs, the only reason they are good in the first place is that you can run four of in a regular deck. EDH is the format where big, explosive, and expensive cards really shine, you want to be making the most out of your mana.

What you don't realize is that kaalia is an amazing general, so one card you can cut right off the bat is aether vial. amazing in modern and legacy, but pretty useless when all your creatures are being summoned out by kaalia. and that's another thing, i don't really recommend running other creatures besides dragons, demons, and angels, and a few other creatures who help protect kaalia. seriously, all you should be doing is summoning and protecting kaalia, she will take care of the rest. cards like dolmen gate and reconnaissance really do wonders for your deck. also, here's a little secret tech: the wording in reconnaissance makes it so you can attack and deal damage while saving creatures from getting dealt damage themselves. sorta like a pseudo-vigilance. you should also run a lot more dual lands, the secret to a great EDH deck is a great mana-base. another card you need is Sol Ring, great for one turn signets, it's an EDH staple. anyway, check out my deck for a good assessment of what cards you should be running: http://www.mtgvault.com/ViewDeck.aspx?DeckID=212043

Now, i'm not saying you should copy and paste my deck (you should run the cards you think you'll have the most fun with), and i don't recommend using these cards that i use: desolation angel, armageddon, and decree of annihilation. While they are absolutely back-breaking cards and usually win me the game, some people find that playing mass land removal spells is unfun for the exact reason that it usually wins you the game. EDH is primarily a casual format, and the focus should be having as much fun as possible, so don't run those cards unless the people you play against are really competitive and run decks like zur enchanter or azuza lost but seeking or some sort of esper artifact combo decks.

also, you have vampiric tutor!?! thats a crazy expensive card lol, i'm jealous

once again, i like your build, and run the cards you want to run, but i recommend taking out a lot of the one-of spells for more explosive, utility based ones. happy playing mate!

Thanks dude was totally not expecting a reply so soon! Good advice mate, I'll look into changes asap :) Yeah I've got lucky on several cards, also helped by the fact that me and my friends pool cards. We're pretty casual, always building and taking apart decks, but there seems to only be one guy who really has much skill... I will soon dethrone him lol
Never heard of Dolmens Gate and Reconnaisance, but will look into them.

Thanks again!

Np man, with a sweet general like kaalia, you shouldn't have any problems taking over, you just need to know how to run her correctly.

When you use Reconnaissance, target creature will NOT deal combat damage although if used with Kaalia will trigger her ability.

You could replace Emeria the sky ruin with something better. It is very unlikely you are going to get out 7 out of the 11 plains you have in the deck given that it is a three color deck.

The thought had crossed my mind, but I really wouldn't know of anything decent to replace it with, apart from another plains. Any ideas? Thanks for the comment :)

Well you could add one of the eventide lands Rugged Prairie of Fetid Heath. Reflecting Pool and Vesuva are great lands for multicolored decks as well. Kher Keep may have some utility if you have extra mana left over at the end of your turn. Sacred Foundry, Godless Shrine, and Blood Crypt are very good too. I would also take out Akoum Refuge as it can be rather annoying in the beginning of the game to have that come in tapped and you could even replace it with Blackcleave Cliffs and avoid that problem. The one life point you gain from it is trivial in EDH anyways.

Also I would definitely take out Archwing Dragon. Since you are going to be cheating in creatures with Kaalia, it makes no since to have him especially given that you must remove it at the beginning of your endstep. You could replace it with Bogarden Hellkite since you have Kiki-Jiki or even better Steel Hellkite for some removal options. Also you don't have that much of a need for things like fervor since again, you are getting in creatures with Kaalia and they will come in tapped and attacking.

Utvara Hellkite is another terrific card that could benefit this deck and could replace Archwing Dragon.

Honestly I just had archwing in there because it was something I had - the suggestions you've given me are great :) and fervor helps get Kaahlia attacking faster... But only if I happen to draw it early - so I see what you mean.
