Merfolk control/token deck. Kinda strange, but I think I finally like how it plays. =]

Deck discussion for Fish N' Chips

i have a merfolk deck but mine is T2 legal as i only have cards from the current sets
http://www.mtgvault.com/ViewDeck.aspx?DeckID=82655

any way just wanted to know how u plan to use training grounds in this deck and how lullmage mentor works if u have no cancel cards in the deck

also cheatyface is the best sideboard card i have ever seen lol!!

The training grounds let me spam the Seastalkers' ability and helps me level up the Wavewatch a little faster. Now that I look at it, I should probably only have 2 of them in here...

And lulzmage works because I can get out so many merfolk so fast that I can just use his ability to tap merfolk to counter things.

Thanks, though to be honest with you, I have never been good a making merfolk decks. It's my hidden weakness. I personally think this is my worst deck. So if you want help on a merfolk deck...I would say I'm really not the guy to ask =/

The problem with Merfolk deck is that all the time I tried to make one I didn't know if to go the aggro way or the mill way...and ended up doing both really bad.

Ah, I just looked again at this deck and I remember that I wanted to ask you something. What do you think of the merfolks of Lorwyn and Shadowmoor blocks? I asked because I noted you didn't use any of them.

Oh they're insane. There's a "famous" legacy merfolk deck that is just plain crazy. I didn't want to make that though, since it's too 'cookie-cutter'.

Merfolk decks are plain tuff to do. What I think is 'refreshing' about this deck is that it is very straight forward in how it should be played and has a very clean cut in its strategy - not always easy with Merfolk from what I can tell and which is likely why you are underwhelmed by it...you seem to enjoy creating decks with more...flair.

I would also, if I felt so inspired, use this as a template. Its good. Keeping with your islandwalk theme Id recommend the following:

- 4x Merfolk Seastalkers (Your deck relies on being quick and unblockable - they are not quick. And the tap ability frankly sucks for 3 mana (unless you get lucky with 1:30 chance of pulling a training ground). Keep 2 if you must, but aggression is the best defense)

+ 2 Tidal Warrior + 2 Thada Adel, Acquisitor (just to make things more fun!)

- 4x Enclave Elite
+ 4x Grimoire Thief because it is only the most fun Merfolk card EVER! - and it could potentially combo nicely with the Lullmage Mentor

- 4x Halimar Wavewatch
and if you drop Halimar Wavewatch and Merfolk Seastalkers, you really wont have a huge need for training grounds
so - 2x Training Ground
and you can add
+ 3x Stonybrook Banneret and for card draw + 3x Cold-Eyed Selkie.

I dunno, you’re a smarter magic man than I, but I figure this would make the deck more effective and a whole lot more fun!

dude this deck is sick. i have made a merfolk deck of my own from Lorwyn/Eventide/Shadowmoor. might need something more, but it has been very successful 3/4 wins so far in actual play. give me some tips or let me know what you think.

Haha, I totally forgot about this deck. It's a lot different now to be honest. I should probably update this list =P

Still, even with the new version, I just don't like merfolk. I love tribal decks, but...eh, these guys just don't work with me =/

haha my favorite deck that i've ever build was merfolk lol i loved them because none of them were really that good on their own, they dominated as a group!

would yo mind taking a look at my go fish deck? i was meaning to make a legacy FISH deck but i think it turned out to be more tempo-ish:p

I'll take a look sure. I rarely play this deck, I honestly don't even like it that much. I just updated it to how it currently looks, but still, it's just..."meh" =/

hey thanks! well maybe i can help with this one, first merrow reejery is more useful than merfolk sovereign. secondly i would change enclave elite to wakethrasher. wake thrasher is just beast man. try that and tell me how it works!

Yeah I guess I should use those. I used to have this as a standard deck...then I changed it up...I think my dislike for it is that I just never have settled on how I want it to look. =/

This might be nice though.

Ask yourself this -- What's faster, the 60 card deck, or the "56" card deck? That's why.

oh. so you're using it to basically get two cards out from your deck

Fetch lands are often used for thinning purposes, so that you'll draw spells that you need instead of dead land drops.

Wake Thrasher. I wanted the deck to be an aggro token-ish design with the control-ish aspect from LULZmage. Until I had Wake Thrasher, I never had that nice balance between power-house aggro and control without over-doing one or the other.

Wake thrasher is a freakin hard-a he becomes huge a the beginning of everyturn. its like a sleeping giant that wakes up every turn

Infinite Counter combo = Lullmage mentor + lullmage mentor + Kicked Rite of Replication. you tap all seven, counter one spell, get seven tokens, tap 7 tokens, counter another spell, get 7 tokens. Rinse and repeat, opponent should concede or you just overrun with tokens

Would aether vial be any good here? Helps you get out your dudes a lot faster, and speed, from what I've learned from legacy, is really good.
If you have the cash, you could make it so all your counter spells are more or less "free". Like daze and fow. you can tap out to lay more dudes, and still have "counter mana" open. just a thought.

I think you maybye have too many lords... and only 4 token making cards.Eventhough the flutterstorm combo would b great I dont think it works . you could possibly splash green for tarmagoyf (I hope thats how u spell it :) )

Since you dig the "tribal symbiosis" decks, here's my W/U Merfolk Wizard deck that accomplishes a lot of what is done here, though more creature based.

http://www.mtgvault.com/ViewDeck.aspx?DeckID=136497

What's your thoughts on splashing white? Far more token generating options to feed Mentor/pump Wake Thrasher, that's not even getting into all the soldier buffs you could add.
