Deck Description

Goblins are, indeed, back!

There are plenty who will say they never left, and they have good arguments. No one would say our favorite little rascals didn't take a serious beating last rotation: our chieftain, the wardriver, and who could forget the far-too-fleeting romance we once again had with Goblin Grenade? The shrine shouldn't be discounted in this discussion, either. It was a heavy blow to receive right after getting what is arguably one of the coolest goblins of all time--Krenko, Mob Boss. His synergy with chieftain (being hasted himself, and spitting out 2/2 hasties vs 1/1s) was a beautiful array of turning little green men with red backgrounds sideways.

We lost some steam over the past months, there's no doubt. Izzet brought some interesting gizmos, particularly Guttersnipe, but nothing that really lent itself to a Standard goblin tribal deck. Gatecrash, however, provided just enough to put Goblins back on their feet.

Deck discussion for Goblins are back!

I would consider Hellraiser Goblin - he gives all creatures haste (much like chieften) but with the drawback of forcing all creatures to swing every turn. But this is Goblins, so we should be doing that anyways.

I thought about Hellraiser, but here is the thing: he basically says, "creatures you control can't block." As it sits, the only way I will have creatures for blocking if I was running a hellraiser would be to tap Krenko on the opponent's turn. With Goblins, sometimes you really need that one token or Arsonist to sit back and chump for you, and hellraiser doesn't allow that outside of finding some way to give your creatures vigilance. I do really like him, though, and the fact that he allows Krenko to be useful a whole turn early is nothing to sneer at. I'll playtest him around a bit and see how I feel. Thanks!

Hellraiser is definitely worth considering for standard Goblins. Also, Banners Raised may be a good alternative for Dynacharge if you're looking for Battle Cry type effects. Banners Raised is only 1 mana, and gives +1/+0 to all of your creatures. That means that for just 1 Mana, you can probably pump out more damage than a non-overloaded Dynacharge. And other than the fact that it costs you two cards, a pair of Banners Raised will end up being better than Dynacharge in the long-run.

Hellraiser is too pricey for goblins

At 3 CMC, he is about the high end average for Goblins. All of my Goblin decks have always run a goblin "Lord" (i.e. Goblin Chieftain), and those are always 3 CMC. For giving all of your creatures haste, as well as sitting on a solid 2/2 body, he's a decently well rounded Goblin. And honestly, you're complaining about a 3 CMC Goblin when you already have Guttersnipe, who is also a 3 CMC goblin, and Krenko, who is a whole 4 CMC. If you ask me, without Haste, Kreno is way too expensive for a Goblin. But, with Hellraiser Goblin in play, you can drop a Krenko, and tap him for Goblin Tokens, and swing with all of those Goblin Tokens all in the same turn!

This is Standard, and both are no longer in Standard. If you read the description, I talk about how this deck misses both of them.
