Deck Description

Hey!
wanted to make a shot at a kobolds deck.

I might use it in a my annual friendly old school format (EC 93-94 rules) tournament. Deck is made for 1-1 play!

I'm weirdly trying to go with a look down - Johan deck!

We play with no sideboard, so cards in the sideboard are there because I'm thinking about using them in the deck

How to Play

kobold control! try to tap your opponent's cards with kismet and leave big creatures tapped with meekstone. Lot of drawing abilities to draw free kobolds and clug your opponent's hand. Enough power up to take your kobolds at 2 power and use johan if they get bigger. Also added some castle to make them great blockers.

Deck discussion for kobold

Aw, that is cruel! Don't make me do that to you and your deck ...
Kobolds ... unfortunately, there is no good way to play Kobolds. The hard truth is, whatever deck you come up with, you'd still be better off if you replaced those Kobolds with other bure more useful small creatures. Especially in a 3-colour deck like this with Johann!
See, you might be able to drop some zero-cc-Kobolds turn one but they have power zero, so what is it worth? Nothing. So you add stuff to beef them up, but those buffers could as well buff something better. And as soon as the first board swipe comes, all your advantage is gone.

The best Kobold deck I've seen was a straigth mono red one with 4 Howling Mines, 4 Gauntlet of Might and 4 Alpha Orcish Oriflammes. Why Alpha? Because those have a casting cost of just 1R. The true cc is 3R but some people didn't know and the others let him go because it was a freaking Kobold deck and everybody wanted him to stay. So, basically, the best this ever got was a deck that was cheating. And the few games it actually won was because of Fireballs (that were huge because of the Mana Flare part of the Gauntlet) ...

So, no. This ain't work. I applaud the Johan Twist, but you'd still be better off running staples like Kird Ape instead of those Kobolds. BUt I don't dare to butcher this deck. It's not my style to tell someone to take out all his key cards. But Kobolds don't give me anything to work with. The only thing going for them is costing zero mana, which opens the possibility of some combo shenanigans. But even then Ornithopter is better than Kobolds.

haha I get that! I don't know why they made them this bad! Even the overlord is like not good haha! I have a good kitchen table kobold deck running along metallic mimic, mirror entity, steely resolve and protean hulk!

I'm always the one trying weird decks but this johan/kobold might be too much haha!

If you are okay with it I might try my hand on a Johan-weenie version without (most of) the kobolds.

I've had some experience with the 93/94 format, and can tell you that you should go with a very low mana base to have a higher amount of booster-spells and burn.

your one advantage is that you get enough creatures to ram through early defences much like the "steroids" decks that were used back in the day.

You will be needing lots of cards costing only 1 mana, 4 kobold overlord, 12 0-cost kobolds.

If you have berserk you will stand a much better chance with this.

You can probably make it work with howling mine, but focus on being extremely aggro.

The pump and burn spells win you the game but if your base consists of almost free but good weenies instead of free-but-useless-on-their-own-Kobolds, then the former has the edge. Therefore I am pretty sure that original Zoo or Granville's Explosion deck will be better than anything Kobold related.

I suppose it would be better with giant growth/unstable mutation/berserk/blood lust/holy strenght!
I'd be curious to see a johan-meekstone weenie! If you feel like trying to do one, I sure wanna see it! I've never seen anyone playing johan, might be a good card for your obscure card challenge! Trying to keep it old school as I'm not building new kitchen deck anymore!

Sure it would be better with giant growth, unstable, berzerk, blood lust. But it would even be better if it would ALSO run Flying Men, Kird Apes, Scryb Sprites, BoPs and Serendib Efreets instead of Kobolds (plus bolts, chain lightnings, wheel, ancestral and twister for carddraw). Aka Granville's Explosion deck.

I'll have a shot at Johan-Meekstone at some unknown point in time. I was on sick leave last week, can't say when I'll find the time.

There's also dark ritual + 3 unholy strength, though that isn't an instant.
Unstable mutation is also worth a shot, and adding blue will give acces to stuff like force spike.

PUSCHKIN:
The rate at which you can cast kird, flying and scrybs is beaten by kobolds. You will be able to attack with 2-3 kobolds AND pump them before the three stables can be pumped. You win by having excess mana to use at pump. If the kird-player blocks you boost the kobold being blocked ridding him of a creature while still being able to cast more creatures and boost the next turn. The weak part of the kobolds is that you need to produce one more damage with pump for every kobold you play to stay ahead, so it runs out of steam much faster than steroids, but can compete against it speedwise for a little while :D The secret to kobolds is to exploit that you get attackers for free and as a result can use that mana with boost.
Try to remember the impact ornithopter actually had back then (Now that I've mentioned it, it does fit well into a kobolddeck).
Especially with countersupport like forcespike and counterspells. Back then I played dark ritual+unholy strength myself with ornithopters, which was nice because path to exile didn't exist by then, so swords to plowshares were only present if the opponent got lucky :D
