The idea behind this deck is to play a bunch of black cards onto the battlefield that have the swamp symbol in their mana cost. If you count the number of Swamp symbols, this will give you a total "Devotion" to black cost.Then you SLAM a Gray Merchant of Asphodel onto the battlefield and perform a massive life leach based on your "devotion to black" count - often killing the opponent in the process.Note: The Gray Merchant is known as "Gary!"Gary's awesome!Other Synergies with Pack Rat:Pack Rat is a disgusting (spits) card that can get out of control. - When you play him, he's a 1/1. - You make another pack rat - both are 2/2's.- You make another pack rat - all 3 are 3/3's.- You make another pack rat - all 4 rats are 4/4's. Things are getting scary now.- You animate the "Mutavault" which is all creature types - including a rat. Suddenly the 4 rats are now 5/5's. You can animate the Mutavault at instant speed - even tapping himself to animate himself if you want.Pack rats are deadly! If your opponent doesn't stop the Pack Rat engine, things can spiral out of control very quickly - especially if you're playing against a control deck who's sitting on counters, and you're not playing any spells for them to counter!
Pack Rat Variation:Turn 1: ThoughtsiezeTurn 2: Pack Rat (1 x 1/1)Turn 3: Discard a card - create a pack rat (2 x 2/2)Turn 4: Discard a card - create a pack rat (3 x 3/3)Turn 5: Discard a card - create a pack rat (4 x 4/4). The opponent should be dead at this point if you attack with all your pack rats - especially if you're able to animate a Mutavault to increase the size of all your pack rats to 5/5's.Devotion Variation:Turn 1: ThoughtsiezeTurn 2: Pack Rat (which will probably get nuked at this point)Turn 3: Nightveil Spectre (building up devotion to black)Turn 4: Descration Demon (devotion now at 5 assuming the Pack Rat died)Turn 5: GARY !!!
