Deck Description

This is my first EDH deck. In my attempt to come up with a deck that is competetive in multiplayer games, what started out as a mill deck gradually became more and more of a combo/synergy one.

The deck is pretty fun to play and is competetive largely because of the multiple synergies in the deck. It has a number of control/reset cards which can be used and re-used when needed. I did my best to utilize every combo potential I could squeeze out of the cards here.

Would love to hear some comments and suggestions from you guys.

Deck discussion for Brink of Insanity

I'm thinking of using Academy Ruins but i'm not sure if I really need it or what to replace if I do use it. Suggestions?

I was thinking of getting some smaller creatures because the deck has some difficulty against beatdown. Not sure if this will be good enough. Maybe a Mnemonic Wall would serve me better. Any suggestions on what I should take out of the deck?

I like the idea for this deck. Mill in Commander is so hard to pull off, but from the looks of it, you're giving it a damn good shot. My only issue with the deck is that many commander decks run eldrazi shuffle in their decks ( At least in my play group), so milling them out completely is basically impossible. I've found the only way around this is exile their graveyard as the eldrazi is being put in, or exiling the eldrazi somehow.
Another trick you've seem to come across is dealing damage through discard, but have you thought about dealing damage through the mill as well? Bloodchief Ascension is an excellent choice for that. Let your opponents damage each other, or maybe help out a little, and boom, any card that's put into a graveyard deals them two damage and gains you two life.
Other than that, I would merely suggest some of the Leylines, like Anticipation and Void. Both would help you immensely in this deck.

Thanks. I've have stopped playing the game for a decade so i'm not sure what the eldrazi is but you are correct, milling is a pretty hard way to win in commander. This is why I went for infinite mill combos like Deadeye Navigator + Peregrine Drake + Sands of Delirium/Mind Grind and the commonly used Mindcrank + Duskmantle Guildmage.

I did run a Bloodchief Ascension a while back. Not sure why I removed it since it also does infinite mill with Mindcrank. Thanks for reminding me. :)

There are still some cards that I would like to add to the deck, Leyline of Anticipation bring one of them, but i'm having difficulty picking out a card to take out. Any suggestions?

Other than that, the biggest issue I have is dealing against beatdown decks and being ganged up on. I'm trying my hardest to improve the tempo of the deck hoping getting the fatties out earlier than I usually do can help me survive long enough to play my combo/synergies. Soon i'll be so desperate, i'm going to start using Ensnaring Bridge and Propaganda which is the last thing I hope to do because they don't have any synergy in the deck.

From what I'm seeing, you have several mana rocks that really just aren't needed. I would throw in Thran Dynamo, Solemn Simulacrum, Palladium Myr, and Burnished Hart instead. They have mana correction and are fetch for lands. I would also drop Arcane Denial since it really doesn't help you that much. I think a Swan Song would be better.
I would just drop most of your signets and cluestones. I personally am not a fan of paying three mana for one later on. Just my thoughts though.
I have a mill deck that I've put up here, if you'd like to get some ideas from it, I wouldn't stop you.

I was thnking the same thing when I started with this deck. I kept getting mana-screwed mainly because a lot of the creatures require a couple of blue or black mana. I decided to get some stones and it has worked for me so far. I might do away with one of them and replace it with Burnished Hart.

This is the second time someone suggested Swan Song. This time, I will be giving it a try. Thanks.

Had the chance to look at your mill deck some time back. Left a comment too. :)

Small update, decided to take Rogue's Passage out and replaced it with Lux Canon. Hopefully this helps me in dealing with pesky artifacts and enchantments without sacrificing my own permanents in the process.

If you're looking for more combos there is Painter's Servant and Grindstone. Against cards that automatically get shuffled back into their decks like Eldrazi (you haven't got any idea what these are? look them up, you're in for a treat, they're basically what would happen if Lovecraft was put in charge of MTG) and Elixir of Immortality you can use Tormod's Crypt for one, there are other good cards for that as well.

I think Painter's Servant is banned in EDH. This was one of the reasons I took out Grindstone and replaced it with Keening Stone.

Tormond's is a maybe since I don't really rely on milling (unless it's a one-hit mill kill) to win. I actually need people to have cards (lots of them) in their graveyards since i'm running Keening Stone, Consuming Aberration,Diluvian Primordial, which I can sometimes flick, and Geth in the deck. What I could really use are cards can help me get rid of artifacts without having to destroy everything else.

Thanks for the suggestions though. I've been reading up on the eldrazi storyline and it is indeed Lovecraft-ish! Now i'm starting to regret taking that 10-year hiatus from the game. Missed a lot of good expansions/storylines. Lol.

Gate to Phyrexia seems like a better option than Lux Canon. Thanks! Hope I can find one.

Painters servant is banned. I havr to suggest trying szedek lord of secrets over wrexial. hell serve the purpose of milling a bit better as its similar to keening stone except it is its power which doubles when he hits. starting at 5 going to ten then twenty. also lot of players do run the legendary eldrazi as they can go in any deck and the abilities are overpowered and can usually hit the field. so maybe add a relic of progenitis a nihil spellbomb (i think its nihil) extripate and surgical extraction. the spellbomb and relic would be better since in response to the grave shuffling back in you can sacrifice them anf get the entirety of the grave. bribery might also be nice as well as you can take yhe best card someone has.

Thanks. Those are some good suggestions. Strange as it may seem, i'm not trying to get more mill cards in the deck. But now that you've pointed out wrexial, I am thinking of replacing it with Lord of the Void. Not sure if it's a good idea since it is harder to cast but it will help me get more creatures on the board, not to mention exile those Eldrazis.

I might use nihil spellbomb if I can find a card to take out from the deck.

Bribery sounds good if it wasn't so expensive. I have Praetor's grasp in the deck. Also using Archeomancer/Mnemonic Wall in the deck so that allows me to take out a couple of cards from an opponent. Another reason why i'm not overly concerned with decks using Eldrazi.

Looking at your lands it should be alright to put lord of the void in. You also may want to add isichron scepter as well. its an awesome artifact especially with something like cyclonic rift, boomerang and counterspell

Yeah, Isochron Scepter will have a lot of good uses in my deck. Now for the hard part. Looking for a card to remove.

Id have to say fellwar stone. it adds mana but that mana could be only adding colorless instead

0

I normally play multiplayer games so fellwar stone is pretty much a staple. And I really need to accelerate mana prod. I find that the earlier I get my fatties out, the less I get attacked which increases my chances of getting my combo cards out and eventually, winning games.

Update:
Lux Canon out, Isochron Scepter in. Was choosing between Gate to Phyrexia and the scepter but went for the scepter because... It makes more sense I guess. Lol.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. Keep 'em coming. Any comments are welcome as well.

So i'm going to use Swan Song. Need to replace 1 of my counterspells. Torn between Arcane Denial and Memory lapse.

Just thought about this, for a guy who constantly refers to himself as "the dragon", how come he is posting a deck without any?

0
Posted 09 March 2014 at 21:48

I might not have a dragon but I do have a drake (Peregrine) which, according to "literature" is a small, commonly evil, dragon that breathes fire but has no magical abilities! Pretty apt description for Viserys Targaryen if you ask me. Lol.

Besides, the deck is meant to be a picture of Viserys' state of mind. Despite the Targaryen's colors being black and red, black and blue seems to be a better fit for someone who is on the brink of losing his sanity. :)

Did some strealimining-of-sorts. Here's an update of the changes:
Engineered Explosives out, Sensei's Divining Top in;
Dimir Guildmage out, Vampiric Tutor in;
Lord of the Void out, Mystical Tutor in; and
1 Swamp out for a Cavern of Souls.

I'm basically trying to get my combo cards or cards that will help me improve my position in the game out ASAP.

Opinions will be very much appreciated.

All you really need is a way for him to be Unblockable and have him do 21 damage. 21 commander damage is the same as 10 poison counters, they loose

Ashiok and Oona are good choices. They have excellent library removal. Also, you could go with Archive Trap. Fairly good card in a format where deck searching is key.
