If this is casual, looks great.

Needs a lot of work for legacy.

you have very little reason to run the Bannerets, and Currents really isn't that great. I'd go mono-Blue, and run some Counterbalance / Sensei's Divining Top.

I dont really see how counterbalance is a good card explain please. and for the sensei's i do like that card but its an expensive card thats why im not running aether vial.

With Sensei's Diving Top, you can change your top card to the same mana cost as the spell they are playing so it gets countered by counterbalance. Hence the deck type "CounterTop"

Pretty much what kaim_arouet said. the CounterTop lock can give you very cheap counter magic, without having to spend cards in hand. This lets you build up on card advantage, which is how control decks win. Granted, Merfolk in Legacy doesn't need the CounterTop package, but since I don't expect your willing to put in Daze / Force of Will, it seemed the best option to suggest.

I like the currents cause where i play at people have burn spells and vampires stuff that can do direct damage so life gain will put a good stop to that.

yea forces are a bit out of my range for a deck,. but i do understand it now and am thinking about adding them cards to my deck i just like the white blue though cause of the tokens that will all get +1 +1 and the life gain since i should have a fair amount of merfolk out.

0

Lullmage Mentor can give you tokens, as well as give you some "free" countermagic in a pinch though. When you start adding colors to a deck, it starts to become vulnerable to stuff like color-screw, so unless you grab better spells from that color as well, there's no reason to run other colors. A rason to splash White is Path to Exile, not lifegain. A CounterTop lock should be able to stop burn (for the most part) in it's tracks.

I'd say:
+4 Curse Catcher
+4 Lullmage Mentor
+4 Counterbalance
+3 Sensei's Divining Top

for:
-3 Summon the School
-4 Judge of Currents
-4 Stonybrook Banneret
-4 Stonybrook Schoolmaster

Then of course the mana base becomes strait Islands, with maybe 4 Wasteland thrown in if you feel like it.

Ok just gonna start rolling these out, you can play a merfolk counter deck, or the white/blue merfolk deck and have access to a bunch of other cool cards.

I read the comments and it seems your going mono-blue, which is good, counter merfolk is hard to deal with too. Have you ever thought about throwing in some of the lorwyn merfolk blue spells?
I would definitely recommend the following:
-Merrow commerce, so you can attack with everything in the same turn, and have defense the next turn, or more mana with grand architect.... which brings me to my second point.
-Maybe adding a merrow harbringer, so you can fetch out of your library any merfolk card you need, and if it's a tribal merfolk spell you can get those too :]
and last but not least
- I would highly recommend throwing in some cryptic commands, since the versatility of it's effect can really make the difference in a game, if you can't counter something with it, you can tap all of your opponents creatures and flood them with damage the next turn if you choose too, more options = more win chance. This would be a devastating card to go along with Surgespanner, return target permanent after you attack with him, (unblockable with soveriegn of course so he doesn't die) then pay the 2 to send back something, have merrow commerce out, and everything you just attacked with, or tapped, including the soveriegn are now untapped and ready to block again. :]

And lastly:
If this was my build, I would try to abuse grand architects second ability, throwing in some artifacts so you can tap all of your blue creatures for 2 mana each, why not lol.

If you really wanted to throw in artifacts, pair it with the merrow commerce, and watch the massive amount of colorless mana flow from all your blue creatures.

Awesome deck! Good luck!

it might just be me but it looks like u have a lot of merfolk buffing creatures of course but you dont have any creatures to buff i guess.. what i mean is practically all ur creatures r buffing so you wouldnt want to loose any seems like you need a creature that can be ur hard hitter id say replace banneret with one .

Ok I have a merfolk deck(http://www.mtgvault.com/ViewDeck.aspx?DeckID=112859) that I'm pretty proud of, it was my first deck, it really not the same, and now it running like a charm, so heres a few tips that I think should prove useful.

Merrow Commerce is awesome.
Fallowsage is the best draw for merfolk.
Lulmage mentor is the absolute counterspell.
Drowner of Secrets is also awesome.
Rite of replication is a must have.
You don't need more colorless mana with merfolks, even less since your running so many banerets, and that architect is not a merfolk! I like sticking to the theme.
Lord of Atlantis is hard to find, and if your going to run it, I suggest spreading seas.
Actually spreading seas anyway since it awesome to disrupt the enemy's mana, and make you draw.
If you are going to stay like that but want a hard hitter, try Wake Trasher.

Nice deck it has given me some good ideas for a Blue deck thanks. I have on here a couple of decks that i would really appreciate any advise on you could give as im new to deck building. Mainly i have one called elf-ish has left the building and another called deathbringers revenge, hope you can help. One thing on your deck it looks great but whenever i build a blue deck i find it hard not to include Capsize but i think thats just a personal thing

Love merfolk.

Spreading seas is interesting... I'll have to consider that for my own Merfolk deck.

I play a lot of aggro decks around me, so this would be too slow in my area. I seriously recommend getting Force of Wills gradually, they're such life savers.

Here's my deck:
http://www.mtgvault.com/ViewDeck.aspx?DeckID=110904

The differences:
Umezawa's Jitte, Mutavault, Stifle, Force of Will, and Cursecatcher.

Like I said, I face a lot of aggro so Jitte is awesome for that. Mutavault gets boosts from all your lords so you might want to consider it. Stifle is just a good card that I threw in to get from 58 to 60... slows down decks with a lot of fetchlands. Force of Will is the best blue card out there. And Cursecatcher is a nice 1 CMC card that gets you some extra negation occasionally.

In my testing, I found that Sovereign was the least useful Merfolk of the 5 you have + cursecatcher. Maybe it works better for you.

Hope I helped.

Indeed force of will is crazy good, but it expensive and the same applies for Jittle, Mutavault.
Stiffle is good, it really your choice, but I don't like cursecatcher much.
Please comment on mine if you can (http://www.mtgvault.com/ViewDeck.aspx?DeckID=112859) but don't mention the cards that you mentionned here, I don't have the budget for that.

Not really, his mana cost is 1/2 and a bit of 3, and in there are merfolks that lower by 1, and vial that pays for them right after....

u should really have 4 cursecatcher. Merfolk sovereign is good but not that much. U could also replace ur brainstorm with standstill(works great with aether vial). If u have the money, change ur counterspells withforce of will

0

Not my deck but I think the purpose of his deck is to have merfolks that give +1/+1, so sovereign seems a good idea, and personally I still don't like cursecatcher.

yea gorick is right i have it built so almost all my creatures will boost eachother so i dont have to wait for one that does,. force of will is out of my budget and standstill im having a hard time deciding why its good ya i get the draw power but my deck dont have anything that is needed to win it pretty much boost itself.

If you put in force of will instead of brainstorm and standstill instead of spreading seas you would end up with a deck that is very much like my Fun with Merfolk deck. You only would lack what I consider one of the best creature support cards of all time Kira, Great Glass-Spinner add a 2 of her and your deck will be shiny.

My fun with merfolk deck is a a very slight modification (all blue no white) of a 1st Place Legacey Pro Tour see (http://magic.tcgplayer.com/db/deck.asp?deck_id=679661)

Haha I'm replying instead of the actual owner of the deck... but he doesn't seem to reply and I have a merfolk deck myself... Once again, force of will, standstill, Kira are all cards that are either hard to get, or expensive.

Hey, thought I'd leave a little present for you that I stumbled upon..... A really awesome card draw/ free damage card to throw in, Cold-Eyed Selkie, a blue/green creature spell (you can pay with either mana) and whenever you deal damage to an opponent with Cold-eyed Selkie, you draw that many cards, and she already has islandwalk built in, so you can spreading sea's something, get all the +1/+1 from your other merfolk like lord of atlantis, since selkie is a merfolk as well, and draw on average atleast two cards after getting free damage.
If you did throw her in, I would take out the Silvergill Adept since he only gives you one card, you have to show your hand, and then does nothing after chilling on the field other than attacking.
With selkie you can cast, (yea you have to wait a turn to use her draw, but by that time you should have lord of atlantis or sovereign already out so next turn you already drew two cards and are in the same spot as silvergill, except, you can use her everyturn after for more and more cards.
Just thought she was an awesome little card.
Hope I helped!!!! Good luck!
Happy Camping!!!! :]

I think in his case it actually a good idea! In mine not so much because that would mean just too much agro (I mostly play in multiplayer, and I aleardy get too much agro since they know my deck , and they know that if you let it out of control for 2-3 turns, I win, plain simple. if I actually start using my merfolks too attack early on, I'd get focused like crazy)
