Tribal challenge! Whats yours?

Main Deck (60 cards)

Sideboard (0 cards)

No sideboard found.

The owner of this deck hasn't added a sideboard, they probably should...

Submit a list of cards below to bulk import them all into your sideboard. Post one card per line using a format like "4x Birds of Paradise" or "1 Blaze", you can even enter just the card name by itself like "Wrath of God" for single cards.

Deck Description

What is yor favorite creature type?

SO I want to start a Tribal seck Budget challenge. to broaden the range of cards i want to increase the available price to $75 or under.

Tribal rules will allow any set but the Un-sets, but it must contain only one creature type(ex. Myr) and you must have a minimum of 2o creatures. ifcreatures may have multiple types, such as elf warrior. in which case they can be in a warrior deck, or an elf deck.

i will list decks in the description as i see them posted in the comments!

That's because Faeries, like elves, has a really cheap core, it's the things like bitterblossoms, or gaea's cradle that hurt your wallet.

The elemental deck is just fun. Nobody likes it when I harbinger into nova chaser, because nova chaser dies easily, but swings for 10 with trample, and when it dies harbinger drops back on the field and I fetch another chaser. There are no easy answers unless you're running a lot of counterspells.

Re-posting my decks from the other discussion.

Red, Goblins, Tokens - http://www.mtgvault.com/panik8/decks/krenkos-mob/
Green, Elves, Druids - http://www.mtgvault.com/panik8/decks/renegade-elvish-druids/
Blue, Wizards, Draw - http://www.mtgvault.com/panik8/decks/wizards-of-the-draw/
White, Samurai, Legendary - http://www.mtgvault.com/panik8/decks/legendary-shogunate/
Black/Red, Goblins, Graveyard - http://www.mtgvault.com/panik8/decks/grave-goblins/

I used a theme for each deck, as well as a Tribe, in order to keep things somewhat original, despite Goblins, Elves and Wizards being among the most popular tribes in the history of MTG.

Love themes and tribal decks. I play casually with friends and we always try to come up with those sorts of decks, and never use the same theme/tribe as another player. I have some for you to take a look at if you're interested. I also always try to make a deck on a budget and try to keep it around $20. Hope you enjoy!

Satyrs: http://www.mtgvault.com/cspence1010/decks/satyrs/
Ninjas: http://www.mtgvault.com/cspence1010/decks/try-and-stop-me/
Ogres: http://www.mtgvault.com/cspence1010/decks/game-ogre/
Beasts: http://www.mtgvault.com/cspence1010/decks/its-a-beastly-deck/
Elementals: http://www.mtgvault.com/cspence1010/decks/elemental-mastery/
Fungus: http://www.mtgvault.com/cspence1010/decks/fungus-tribal/
Skaabs: http://www.mtgvault.com/cspence1010/decks/stitched-zombies-15/
Skaabs V2: http://www.mtgvault.com/cspence1010/decks/stitched-zombies-20/

The Skaab decks were a personal joy to make. No one else was trying to run them and even the rarest cards for the tribe became very cheap. Same with the Satyrs, they seem to have been shoved under the rug, but I wanted to make them into a deck since I first saw previews for the block. Fungus, Ninjas, Beasts, and Elementals I had inspiration from other decks, the rest are original.

Illusions. This was standard then I added counterspells when it rotated
http://www.mtgvault.com/spensersportsguy/decks/now-you-see-them/
Finally is a little short of the standards but when you are working with dwarfs you are left a little short...

Starfish Tribal!

http://www.mtgvault.com/savajcabbaj/decks/spineless-courage/

It doesn't fit the challenge because there are only two starfish creature types ever printed. Everything else is a "spineless" tribe though, barring the Razorfin Hunter (replacing Stinging Barrier, which was "spineless," due to /needing/ a stable and reliable pinger) and Purphoros (because he's only ever an enchantment).

I'm also brainstorming ideas for an "advocate tribal" but again, advocate isn't a creature type but a name-word shared by a cycle of white creatures. Perhaps, tomorrow, I'll sit down and approach this challenge with a deck following the rules proper ^-^ Until then, I hope at least one person appreciates my cheaty contribution :D

Meanwhile I think the true challange is to build a creature deck with a theme that is NO tribal deck!

Let's face it, you are extremely limited in what to use when you build a tribe deck and the cards give you direct hints at what to include. Never understood the appeal of this and always hoped tribal decks would just be a fad but they just keep on infesting casual ever since Onslaught and are the standard by now.

0
Posted 26 June 2014 at 14:20

I like the whole limited thing in casual, because if you don't you end up with things like Protean-Flash which is strictly a casual deck, since the full list is banned in every format.
http://www.mtgvault.com/couch312/decks/turn-0-win/

0
Posted 26 June 2014 at 14:24

I beg to differ. If the people you play with don't get what "casual" means, no limitations and format rules in the world will change that. They'll still munchkin the shit out of it, no matter if it is tribal decks, EDH or whatever.

For example, if I want to "break" this challenge, I would pick goblins and build a deck with the bare minimum of 20 creatures (Piledrivers and all) and fill the rest with the most efficient burn I can find. Basically any Legacy gobo-burn deck slightly modified to meet the 20-critters-rule. Or I pick "thopter" and build a thopter deck including the infinite token combo (Thopter Foundry and Sword of the Meek) which would vilate the spirit of this challange but not the given limitations and rules.

As soon as you say to yourself "man, that's boring, I'll do an insect deck even though it's not competitive because this is casual, damnit" you realized an important thing and format limitation become obsolete. Because, if you are able to tone yourself down and play an insect tribal, why can't you tone yourself down in a less restrictive environment as well?

AS stated above Puschkin, I totally agree. That is why I have been trying movie/song themes lately.
Did a Harry Potter Slytherin deck.
Wanted to do a Ravenclaw deck, but they are blue and gold and represented with Eagles.
But there are no blue eagles.
Anways, I also did a Wizard of Oz deck.
As well as a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle deck.

Working on others as we speak.

But i see the lust to build a tribal deck...especially if you are new to Magic.
Here is what a new magic player asks his friends,
"What is a good magic deck to start out with?"
Every time the answer is, "What about a Goblin or Elf deck?"

No one recommends a blue control deck, or a black discard deck, or any such thing.
Tribal decks are easy to build, easy to like, easy to recommend.

Here is what I hate. The actual word "TRIBAL."
Pretty sure they just said, back in the day when i played, "what creature type are you running?"
The word "TRIBAL" seems so freaking lame It makes me embarrassed to have a Goblin Deck.
Sounds so formal!

0
Posted 26 June 2014 at 14:41

Nobody recommends blue control because it's boring, sorry to say. Yes, it wins, but usually the only players that play it are the players that have been around for a while and are willing to grind the game out. Same with death and taxes. Easy to build, easy to play, just really grindy and difficult to like.
Same with discard decks.
Both decks win games, but you have to be willing to grind, and quite frankly have to be okay with minimal interaction.

0
Posted 26 June 2014 at 14:55

Regardless, you get my point, right?
That Tribal decks are easy to recommend to new people.
Easy to build.
Easy to do research on.
Sound interesting.

"Tribal" was introduced with Onslaught which focussed on creature types. During that time "creature mania" decks were a thing (decks that run nothing but creatures and lands) and that idea was modified into "tribal decks" - creature decks limited to one creature type. "Tribal deck" was the official word for it from the get-go because prior to Onslaught, the creature type didn't really matter with some few exceptions. Before that, if you ran just one creature type for any reason, it was called a "theme deck". Since the things you mentioned are also themes, that term isn't exactly specific, so people stuck to "tribal", even though tribal originally referred to a specific format.

Anyway, I didn't post this to spoil anyone's fun, my initial comment was more like a piece of snark highlighting the fact that tribal decks are so common and easy to build that it's hardly a challenge. Please don't stop building them and have fun in this project, I am just an oldfart that needs to rant a bit here and there :)

Well, I can't speak for others, but I started playing Magic during Onslaught. So, as far as I'm concerned, nostalgia is a big part in my passion for Tribal.

Let's face it, even before Onslaught/Tribal, it didn't take a genius to take a hint and match cards with obvious synergy. In fact, I think I still remember my friends' mono-black deck down to each card he played and I haven't played him in a decade.

Norrit, Royal Ass, Hypno Specter, Sengir Vamp, Nightmare, Terror, Dark Ritual, Tourach, Duress, Drain Life and Swamps. I think all the cards in his deck were pre-Onslaught, too. Yet, you'll notice how it looks and feels like a Tribal deck, AND a deck meant to battle Tribal decks, with all the creature removal it has...

http://www.mtgvault.com/rocco/decks/instant-heroesjust-add-water/

Human Soldier "tribal". Doesn't meet the 20-creature requirement, but it'd be pretty easy to just play 4 of every creature, & remove 2 spells. I've gotten it just the way I want it, though, and won't be making any more official changes.

That one isn't budget but it'd be easy to reduce the price by running the gold border Rishadan Ports, playing cheaper lands otherwise, and perhaps dropping 1-2 Bloodghast.

Pauper Blood Money
http://www.mtgvault.com/savagethecabbage/decks/pauper-blood-money/
And that one is the all commons version of the previous deck, which /is/ within budget.

Okay, budgetized a few of my tribal decks. (I have 60+ that are a bit less budget-friendly, mostly because they virtually all run Cavern of Souls. ;-) ) Tried to narrow it down to tribes that haven't already been covered above....

*cough* Budget? Not to be nitpicky, but you're like 4x over with that deck, although that's pretty much only because of the lands. Playing 5-color on a budget is pretty slow, so I can't really blame you. Still, I'd "sideboard" your current lands and try to come up with a budget-ish alternative for this challenge. Odyssey dual lands lands are pretty cheap (but not Modern...), while stuff like Pentad Prism fixes a lot of mana problems and can even "ramp" it up. (ie. It enables T3 Legion (or Overlord, in the case of my Sliver deck), which can be pretty annoying, for opponents.)

Otherwise, it looks like a pretty solid deck.

Leviathans

But it's fast, considering how long it usually takes to have a turn where you can drop a half-dozen leviathans in one turn.

Oooh, Tribal format! Though it's typically more skirmish-based with small combos (Much like the ridiculous Myr combo that wrecks face here), it's a format I have always loved.

Here's some of mine:

Shamans http://www.mtgvault.com/azraeltheslain/decks/emberwrought/

Jellyfish http://www.mtgvault.com/azraeltheslain/decks/tentacles-anyone/

Specters http://www.mtgvault.com/azraeltheslain/decks/haze-of-specters/

Though some don't *technically* fall into your guidelines of Tribal (20 creature minimum), they'e all uniformly of the same creature type and the other cards of course add to the overall effectiveness of the decks to not want to take them out.
