Deck Description

A long time ago, in a website far, far away, there was a deck building competition in the Magic on line magazine. The competition was to build a deck that exploited Nacatl War-Pride. I didn't enter in the contest, but I took some ideas from the contest, along with a handful of newer cards, and made my own deck.

I've loved War-Pride since its sneak preview prior to its release, and I wanted to build a deck that would exploit it as much as possible. I've tweaked it over the course of about 1.5 years and would appreciate any comments or advice. I find that the deck really synergises well with itself and is a lot of fun to play!

The cards in this deck all help each other out, and they NEVER get redundant. With this deck, more is always better, the combo just gets bigger, and bigger, and bigger, while avoiding going infinite. BTW, I hate infinite combos.

This deck can easily clear an entire 4 player table in one attack without going infinite and while only attacking one player. I have done it many times.

The best thing is, they never even see it coming...

PS. Thanks for putting two of my decks on the front page guys! Please check out my others, especially if you like Zombies, or Treefolk, or Elf Tokens, or Elf Archers, or Overwhelming Stampede, or Enchantment decks. :) Links below!

How to Play

Directly from one of my posts below, an explanation of the synergy in this deck and how multiple things serve to keep Nacatl alive and maximize its effectiveness.

Way number 1: Pandemonium.

Pandemonium's effect takes place when creatures come in to play. The nacatl tokens come in to play during the Attack Phase, before blockers are even declared. You can use pandemonium to blow up any scary blockers you want.

Way number 2: Oran Rief, the vastwood.

When Nacatl comes in to play, pop oran's ability! It'll be a 4/4 for the rest of the game. That not enough? Well, imagine if you had 2 orans, an oran and a doubling season, 2 orans and a doubling season... You get the picture. Nacatl gets big enough that most creatures would happily get out of the way, if they could, but they can't, because Nacatl won't let them. :)

Way number 3: Primal Forcemage + Lightning Greaves. Nacatl comes in and swings as a 6/6.

Way number 4: Edric.

Aww, you just lost your poor Nacatl? Gonna' miss the little guy? Don't cry too hard, you just drew two more, along with 5 cards that combo well with him and make him bigger and scarier than ever. Aaand you just gained a dozen or more life from those two essence wardens hiding in the corner, so you'll probably live long enough to see all your new cards swing. That is, if all your opponents aren't already dead.

Way number 5: Pandemonium.

Didn't we already cover this? Oh yeah, direct damage your opponent during the attack phase, killing him and removing his blockers before he can even declare them. Then Mycoloth all your delicious Nacatl tokens before they get sacked at the end of turn. Then look at your next opponent in a nasty way.

Way number 6: Doubling season

(I think I mentioned this one before as well... short term memory loss... I'm 27 tomorrow, must be getting old). Who cares if your nacatl dies? Your opponent is still taking 12 other 6/6 nacatl tokens to the face.

Honestly, this deck wins in multiplayer against 3 other opponents if Nacatl even attacks once (providing any kind of decent combo cards are out), often killing them all during the declare attackers phase.

If you're playing a larger game than that, then just hole up and gain life and and tell people "don't attack me and Edric wil luv you..." while you build up your combo to incredible heights until everyone else has taken some damage and you can wipe the board!

If you wanted to, there are enough elves in here that you could easily sub something out for 2-4 immaculate magistrates to:
A-Pump Nacatl so he doesn't die to blockers
B-Pump an unblocked token to finish your opponent
C-Pump your Mycoloth every turn so he doesn't even have to devour your other elves (and your fiber filled Dryad Arbor).
D-Pump up the specific creature that is blocking your Nacatl and laugh like a Howling Banshee while you kill your opponent anyway.

There is a secret 7th way of stopping Nacatl from dying that I almost forgot about because I've never had to use it and it's not all that convenient. Good luck figuring out what it is.

If you're still worried about your nacatl dying after all that, Asceticism.

I like this deck! Maybe add something to keep war-pride alive from a creature blocking it, like slagwurm armor or darksteel plate.... I've always wanted to build a deck to abuse war-pride, you've done a fine job at that

I was concerned with Nacatl death too, at first...

This deck deals with that problem in a number of ways.

Let me explain.

Way number 5: Pandemonium.

I'm really glad you like this deck, play with me on Cockatrice some time and I would also be glad to show you how it works live over the internet, lol.

That was a great explanation haha

Tell you the truth I don't know how i missed it, but I didn't really notice pandemonium. That card is ridiculous for this combo, especially with primal forcemage. I'm really liking that combo, the opponent has 4 creatures out and you have forcemage it's an instant death =p

And I figured you would use mycoloth in that way, I'm pretty fond of Mycoloth... It's a very overpowered card.

I've never played on cocktrice, what is it? An online card playing program I assume? is it free to join and play?

And give me a lil bit and I'll figure out the 7th way to keep him from dying haha
But very nice explanation and rebuttal to my comment =p

Cockatrice is a free to play and free to download online MtG program. http://cockatrice.de/ It has all the cards in the game and you can copy your deck lists from there and easily upload them here.

The program doesn't do anything as far as card abilities or phases automatically, it relies on the players to take care off the gameplay. It has built in functions to allow players to easily keep track of things like life points, mana, creature power/toughness, token generating, etc... But again it's all manual. If you've never played on it before you'll want to take some time to learn the hotkeys (I could teach you or you can play a solo game). They speed things up greatly!

I'd tell you to add me on skype or facebook, but I don't want to post my details here and there doesn't seem to be a PM function...

Hmm it def. sounds interesting for sure. I would have to look into this when I get some time. I work 8 to 10 hours a day on second shift, It takes a large portion of my time away =p

So is it like the stack moves on your time and you have to rely on the players to keep track of whats happening.... like let's say I sac a creature with infernal plunge, is it up the opponent to just know what that card does and that I now have 3 mana in my pool? I'll look into more and see how it plays out. You have my attention with it tho. I imagine it has a text speak so you can communicate with your opponents.

and ya it's too bad this site doesn't have private message abilities so you don't have to always share all your info if you want to tell someone specific something.

Players do have to keep track, but all the card info and images are there so it doesn't matter if you don't know what a card does, you can read it. It even has an oracle function. There are tools for manually keeping track of your mana pool if things get complicated.

Nacatl will die!! My removal deck where I dot just remove your cards from play my friends when they play (not so affectionately) start an exile pile Against this

Defense of the heart is so cheap compared to tooth and nail it's not even funny espically double nacatl with any combo piece out there and kamahl fist of Krosa is dirty I might even add a second one if you could find room

Man, you like to challenge me don't you!

Yeah, in 1v1 a straight creature removal deck like yours would give me a VERY hard time. I will go so far as to say you might just destroy me without hope. However, as I have said (perhaps not to you), I design my decks for multiplayer! :)

In multiplayer removal/counterspell/burn decks aren't quite as strong because there are more targets to choose from, and often, by the time I've played my Nacatl (if hard casting) all those spells will have been spent!

In addition, I do have lightning graves to protect against sorceries, and I find that a LOT of people will start targeting my essence wardens with their removal once they figure out that I'm at 30 life on turn 4, lol.

The second thing that I will say is that I don't like to play with or against decks that become unbeatable! Every deck you will see me design should have some weakness or vulnerability, however small. I try to make fun and original decks, and to me, becoming invulnerable is not fun. In fact, one of the most fun things I have had to do with this deck is try to figure out how to get my War-Pride all the way to the attack phase! War Pride is a particularly fun card for be for two reasons.

1 - It is really, very powerful.
and
2 - It is really, very vulnerable.

Lol for the longest time the goal was to create the fastest (in my play group) deck turn 4 consitent was the standard so I built that deck to break the meta and I removed all there creatures til they ran out of gas lol and the deck is normally slightly modded for multiplayer with increasing devotion and 4 honor the pure buy otherwise left alone

Beacon of Creation may be fun in this deck

0
Posted 07 September 2012 at 19:30

It might, but I like War Pride over Beacon of Creation because, for beacon of creation to work with my combo, I would have to play Pandemonium BEFORE I played Beacon of Creation, either requiring me to have 8 mana free (greatly slowing down my deck) or forcing me to wait a turn to play Beacon (which leaves me open to my own Pandemonium).

With Nacatl, I can drop Pandemonium the moment I'm ready to swing, typically the turn after I play Nacatl, thus I'll have the mana open and won't be vulnerable to my own card.

Yeah, pretty straight forward and lots of synergies :)

* Fun combo with Nacatl would be Varchild's War-Riders but it is off-colour

* Saproling Burst is a must for this deck, I think. It is insane with both Doubling Season and Pandemonium (the latter one is an outright kill, if you do the math a single Burst does 21 Pandemonium damage right out of the bat). Unless of course you don't want to enter the realm of combo.

* I just don't know what to cut since the deck is so tight already.

* You are talking about beefing up the Warpride with Oran, Forcemage and so on. Just to be clear: The copies of Nacatl will NOT copy any +1/+1 counters of the original Nacatl! For this reason I think the Oran-Riefs and maybe Doubling Seasons would be the first ones that could get cut (although Doubling Season would go well with Burst - damn!)

0
Posted 15 June 2015 at 08:43

Lol, high praise, sweet! This deck even has permanent removal that you mention lacking in almost every other deck, lol.
Yeah, this deck made front page way back when.
Note that Oran can beef up the tokens after they come in to play before they deal damage, so at times I use it for that (it's not uncommon for the tokens to be dealing 8 damage each). Of course, the +1 counters only apply after the tokens have resolved, so it doesn't help trigger pandemonium. It also serves to defensively buff up my weenies early game.
This actually isn't the current build I use for this deck any more, I believe this deck currently runs Bramblewood Paragons, which give warriors +1/+1 tokens when they come in to play, and any creature with a +1/+1 token gains trample (more synergy with Mycoloth, and the Orans mean my tokens can have trample as well). I think I cut Kamahl and one other copy of a card, but I'm not sure what.
Also, no way can I cut doubling season, it puts double Nacatl tokens in to play. This means that no matter what I'm attacking with more than twice as many creatures than my opponent can block (including my original War-Pride). It also makes great fodder if I want to devour them in my second main phase. TBH though, I can probably count the number of times I have devoured my Nacatl tokens on one hand, a single swing always kills 3 opponents in multiplayer (could probably kill 8).
Saproling burst would be interesting, but it would require playing Pandemonium first then waiting a turn and I hesitate to play Pandemonium when it might benefit my opponents (particularly when my other creatures would be so very susceptible to targeted burn). Typically, I keep Pandemonium in my hand until the main phase right before I'm ready to swing with Nacatl, you know, just so I can see the last shred of hope drain from my opponent's eyes. I don't even typically use Pandemonium with Mycoloth because one never knows how much damage an opponent could do before Mycoloth drops all his saprolings.
I think this deck is closer to what you could call casual, at least from what I understand of your meta. This is certainly one of my favorite decks.
What decks would you like me to take a look at next?

BTW, I enjoy your deck building philosophy for multiplyer. Iv'e pointed out a number of times that your decks lack focus and have a lot of one ofs, but it's legit that a strategy like that also keeps others from focusing you down early and allows you to pull out unexpected win cons. I really enjoy the politics of multiplayer and politics should be taken in to consideration when building one's deck.

1

Yeah, but I would do so anyway, the main reason is that I have more ideas than deck space, seond reason the limitations of my card pool. That it can also come in handy to veil the actual content and potency of my deck in multiplayer is a welcome benefit but not the reason why I do it.
Philosophy-wise, however, it IS my belief that it is good both for your deckbuilding skills and health of your casual envornment if you built around the limitations of your card pool rather than trying to invest more money or trade singles away to get playsets of the staples. So, for example, when my two Sylvan Libraries are in use and I build a deck that needs more, then I won't trade for more, instead I use Mirri's Guile and Preferred Selection and so on. And if I run out of those, then it's time to use other alternatives, dunno, Commune with the Gods for example, or splashing blue or becoming creative otherwise. I might also change the deck structure and remove the need for yet another Sylvan Library.

While my deck building philosophy, in contrast, is "screw buying cards, just create a reasonable ban list and proxy, then everyone's an equal footing and saves heaps of money and you can try ALL THE IDEAS!". If you go to a print shop they cut out the cards for you really quickly, and there are a load of sites on line that will instantly create printable proxies from the deck lists that you can pull off of this website (or just click the "proxy this deck" link on every deck on the site).

Well, I am almost as much a collector as I am a player. That and I actually like to be limited in card pool (because it helps with creatitvity). Finally, printng proxies also costs money and meanwhile you can get the majority of the real cards for 10 or so cents apiece.

0
Posted 17 June 2015 at 20:11

The majority of real cards you can get for that price, printing in color costs about 50 cents for 9 cards. It may be worth it just to proxy the most expensive cards to see if you really want to buy them.

0

But expensive cards are the ones that you can sell again after you used them, oftentimes with a gain. Unless we are speaking of Type II relevant stuff (here it's the opposite - I immedeatedly sell all expensive cards that I get from boosters as long as they are hot and then buy the ones I like 2-3 years later when they are cheap). I just sold my Liliana and Snapcaster Mage for a total of 141€ which allows me to buy a ton of other cards I need. I invested that money in Flagstones of Trokair, Gravecrawlers and other medium priced cards that I am sure will only raise in price. That way I build up my collection without investing much (about 80 € every 3 months for a display of the latest set). I wouldn't be able so if had proxied Liliana and Snapcaster Mage 4 years ago. And if I proxied those Flagstones and Gravecrawlers now, I wouldn't be able to sell them 4 years from now for the 10 or 20 euros the will be worth by then.
And each time I make a deal, I skim the inventory of the seller for cheap rares and uncommons. You wouldn't believe what you can get for a few cents. I didn't have money to spare back when Avacyn Restored came out so I didn't boost that set, however, meanwhile I have about 2/3s of that set just by accumulating throw-ins I got when making the bigger deals.

Seems legit. I really like to be able to focus a strategy in my decks so even when I was collecting I never bought boosters, just the specific cards I wanted. I only bough boosters when I was just starting out.

Which is a legit approach, too. Trading requires more time but it is also fun. Buying display boxes (just one per edition) also comes with the benefit that at least own every common 4x (which is already a third of all cards ever printed) and usually each uncommon at least once. Which is handy because, while you can get them for 2 cents apiece, the shipping costs would make them way too expensive.

Shipping costs for just 4 cards would be prohibitive, but if you are designing at least one full deck then the shipping cost is negligible, even if you have to source it from two different web sites. If you design More than one deck in a go shipping costs are often included with large orders.

Even better yet, I take MUCH time to assemble my decks (that's why I need MTGVault, I mainly use to keep track of deck content, what to trade for etc.). So I actually wait until a seller has a certain more valuable card plus some chaff to fill the order up to the next postal limit. Because, if you buy entire decks, you'll end up paying higher prices (the sellers that have most cards in stock are typcially twice as expensive as private sellers).
It's a science by itself :P

Out of curiosity, what would you do to make this deck modern compatible? And Impact Tremors would be incredible in this deck.

You are so right about impact tremors, it's been side boarded. Lower mana cost and doesn't trigger for opponents are both large advantages, however it does much less damage than Pandemonium. Pandemonium, however, is very often overkill, I think impact tremors could do the same job just as effectively in most cases, especially in larger multiplayer games. Thanks for the great suggestion.

As for making this deck modern legal, firstly replace all alpha lands with equivalent shock (or preferred dual) lands.

Replace Fyndhorn elves with Llanowar Elves.

Replace Defense of the Heart with 3 Oracle of Mul-Daya in order to accelerate mana and card draw so you can get your critters and play them faser.

Replace Kamahl and Edric with 3 Sword of Fire and Ice for protection, creature control, and card draw.

That should make it nice and modern, while keeping it late game powerful.

Also, Seedborn Muse would be a good add to any green Legacy deck.

Seedborn Muse is powerful in general, but my creatures don't have tap abilities to take advantage during opponent's turns, and this deck is designed to swing once and win, not swing, defend, swing, defend, so no need to untap my creatures.
