Deck Description

Is EDH too expensive for you? Wanna play a fun deck that doesn't cost a fortune? Then allow me to introduce you to....Poor Man's EDH. For under $75 you can own a cool, powerful, and fun EDH deck that isn't too limited. In this installment, we visit the color combo of WB in a vicious Life Drain deck. Featuring a brand new Commander, as well as a few favorites from the past, this deck is sure to spice up any game of Commander and make for a fun night at the shop. Enjoy!

How to Play

The Orzhov Syndicate has remained in Ravnica for years as an economical figurehead. With the Ghost Council leading the Syndicate to wealth beyond your wildest dreams, it's good to be in the Syndicate....as long as you can pay the right price. Karlov has decided to take a public seat to the battlefield to watch the enemies of the Syndicate wither into empty husks thanks to this life draining masterpiece. The first thing you should learn about this deck is that it's all about the life totals. Your prime goal is to have more life than everyone else combined. Let your inner Scrooge out and try to suck every point of life you can out of your armies and opponents! Cards like Nyx-Fleece Ram, Soul Warden, Zulaport Cutthroat, and so much more make gaining life as easy as can be.

The prime reason you should be gaining life is because your cards in this deck all help you benefit from it. Cards like Bloodbond Vampire and Defiant Bloodlord have abilities that go off whenever you go life, so go forth and gain! Another benefit to a high life total is that cards like Damnable Pact use life for some sort of benefit, like drawing cards or watching your enemies suffer! And the best part of gaining life is that your commander, Karlov, get's two +1/+1 counters when you gain life! This can make him a huge threat early on, but he only gets better! If you take off 6, he can exile any creature! Is that pesky Wurmcoil Engine ruining your life total? Drop a few counters and exile him forever, even getting past his annoying abilities to make lesser wurmcoils! Did the Azor Elocutors start trying to win over the crowd with a Filibuster? Exile them into the Undercity, along with their infernal Filibuster! Karlov is a powerhouse of a creature, and you should have no problem with these pathetic dregs!

Speaking of powerful creatures, this deck features two other potential commanders! The complete Obzedat and the mighty Vish Kal stand beside Karlov to end the resistance against Syndicate control! Obzedat is a great life drain card, draining 2 life from an opponent whenever they enter the battlefield, and at the end of the turn, they can fade back into the spirit world until the beginning of your next turn, fueling a powerful turn-based draining strategy! Vish Kal has lifelink and flying, as well as the unique ability to remove all of his +1/+1 counters to give a creature -1/-1 for each removed, adding another powerful removal master to the mix! If Karlov seems to not be working out, the best part of this deck is that either Obzedat or Vish Kal can switch out to give you options in your next game! Just remember, as long as the Orzhov Elite benefit, any price is the right price.
