Where's Doorkeeper and mind grind?

I'd agree with Doorkeeper, certainly a classic for the deck. Mind Grind is a tricky beast, the mana ramp in the deck certainly works well for it but until you have board superiority or an enormous stack of unused mana I'd want to swap it for any other card in the deck. Control is paramount where as Mind Grind always seems like a great fast forward to an already guaranteed win condition.

Yeah true. I've just always enjoyed it, and the lowest I've ever spent on it was 2 and still milled for 6 cards, but yeah might be better in sb here.

I don't think so. the deck is a mill deck but its meant to be a truly competitive deck which means I want to have multiple win cons. I just don't see the point in door keeper when I can play better cards and mill without paying mana. the most important part of a competitive deck is to be able to interact with the game and still have answers for any troubling cards my opponent might have. that being said, I don't play cards like mind grind (though its very good) because spells that help me control the game help me win.

This makes no sense.. You're trying to be competitive with mil and defenders, but don't want to use the one defender that actually mills? True there's better cards out there, but that's your whole theme in one card. As of right now the only win con I see is the little bit of mill you'll get when phenax hits the field? Apparantly I'll just never understand standard.

What you should run is a fourth Phenax or a way to fetch him, like Diabolic Tutor or Jarad's Orders, considering it's kind of hard to win without drawing him.

I have similar deck but I added Thassa for the scry each turn. It makes me draw Phenax faster.
(2 Thassa and 2 Phenax in my deck)

dusk mantle guildmage? dont think its needed really once you have enough creatures and phenax just mill out right?

I'd guess the Guildmage is there for something to burn mana on. With Axebane Guardian and Sylvan Caryatid there is a potential for a good stack of mana and little to spend it all on other than getting either of the 2 Phrophet of Kruphix earlier than usual. An alternative would be the classic Doorkeeper - gives something to burn mana on and increase the number of defenders.

On that note however, throwing in Oracle's Insight (BotG) would give that Scry and Card Draw to get to Phenax.

I am surprised there's no Psychic Strikes. I'd personally suggest taking out the Triton Tactics, it does up the mana curve but provides an option of removing threats which can't be dealt with. It's a personal thing, but I'd take out Doom Blade for Ultimate Price - it's slightly more versatile. Alternatively Devour Flesh is another alternative but less target specific.

should play thassa, and 4 of ea scry land just to make sure you can combo off with Phenax ASAP

I feel like you need more draw power, or you need 4 phenax, because without him your deck doesn't do much.

This is basically the deck I've been dreaming of making, but there needs to be a better way to grab phenax. Personally I was thinking omen speakers would be a good way to dig and play nice with phenax thanks to their big butts.

I agree with all of you. a way to get phenax is needed. but Im not sure what I want to take out. I think I want to drop the mage to the sideboard. but then I have to drop something from the side board. I feel like kiora needs to be cut because she isn't there for anything in particular. shes just there because I like her so I think she needs to go for the benefit of the deck. I think ill drop one incursion along with her. as for main, I think I wanna take the tutor route. but the question is whether to play 2 and bump up something else or play 3. again I don't want to play doorkeeper because I think there are enough alternate win cons. plus ive never really been a fan of doorkeeper. so guys... 2 tutors or 3?

So i decided to go ahead and make changes and i decided to add 3 tutors and drop tower defense. I added 2 hybrids 1 rift and 1 psychic spiral. I also added slaughter games to the sideboard since i have 8 red sources inthe deck. Slaughter games is mainly for the mirror match.

Oooo, Psychic Spiral is an interesting addition. Shame to remove Tower Defence - it worked nicely with Phenax for an increased draw rate and for helping against flyers. If you can afford to bring more green in, maybe swap Tritons Tactics for Tower Defence? Depends I suppose if the untap is more useful.

Psychic Spiral feels more like sideboard material against another mill deck. I'd probably switch that and 1-2 of the 9 removal instants for a single Aetherling and/or 2-3 Reap Intellect in it's place (It's fine since you've got mana). Switching to Slaughter Games after you know what opponent is actually playing. If that feels like it's gonna mess the curve too much, then maybe some counterspells instead. Anyway the point is to keep Phenax alive and graveyard shenanigans out or to just play around them with Aetherling.

Normally id agree but the decks worst matchups are anything with b/r and when ur forced to discard your hand and all ur creatures are getting shot its nice to have a way to get stuff back. Milling is just a bonus.

How about Jace, Memory Adept? He mills 10 cards per turn and you can draw cards for +1? Urban Evolution for draw power and additionals lands?

I built a pre BotG version of this, using ramp into very early traumatize, and curse of the swine so my defenders could block their attacks. Then Mind grind for 10 or so. Best run was traumatize turn 4, with mind grind for 18 turn 5. The defenders definitely work to ramp and mill. I'd maybe rethink the prophet part. It works, but holds the game a bit longer. Urban evolution will help you draw to phenax and keep the ramp going.
