Deck Description

After toying around, trying to make a killer life-gain deck, and with some help from a pair of awesome guys' suggestions (dudeface1369 and HotPoloPlayer), come up with this natural beauty.

From play testing it over a day with several friends decks, the final version is whats seen. There's several ways I was getting a win con. These 3 were the most common;
1. Archangel of Thune, Path of Bravery, Fiendslayer Paladin, Desecration Demon or Lifebane Zombie enchanted with Gift of Orzhova.
2. Using Path of Bravery for its second ability to gain life, Vizkopa Guildmage paying its cast for his second ability.
3. Desecration Demon.

Those three players, Archangel, Guildmage, Desecration are the rally for final in this deck.

Much prefer Archangels for the ability she carries. a +1/+1 for each instance of lifegain. make little creatures big quick, Desecration Demon can become enormous a 10/10+ in one turn.

How to Play

I no longer have mutavault in this deck. It was, as much as I love that card, was bad for this deck. My how to play is in the deck description.

Deck discussion for Angelic Desecration

Been contemplating adding in Crypt Incursion. Common from Dragon's Maze "Exile all creature cards from target player's graveyard. You gain 3 life for each card exiled in this way." Either to sideboard it or remove one each of Archangel of Thune, Fiendslayer Paladin and Lifebane Zombie?

I like this deck, a nice use of extort. I think you made a great sideboard for it too. Great mana curve for it as well. Now with that being said i would like to ask a few questions and make some suggestions.

I'm not fully sure why Mutavault is in here. You said that "Mutavault is good for the fact I have any creature I need," but what creature types do you need? Nothing in your deck is effected by creature types.

I assume you have Tablet of the Guilds in here to trigger Archangel of Thune's ability? If so, you could replace it with Souldmender. Soulmender adds a turn one play to your deck and its cheeper cost makes it easier to extort, it is also a way to make sure you'll gain life every turn.

Desecration Demon is a great card, but do you think there might be something else that fits this deck a little bit better?

Thank you! I have been contemplating removing Mutavault for Orzhov Guildgate. I may be misunderstanding Mutavaults tap ability, but I'll have around 400 different creatures I could make it. I believe it gains those abilities as well but its only 2/2. Could be wrong I've heard it different ways with Mutavault. But I do believe the colorless mana it gives could hurt my casting time and thus brought me to Orzhov Guildgate.

Tablet of the Guilds could give me, if I cast Gift of Orzhova, 2 life. Its not so much there for a
Archangel of Thune as it is for -- well hmm. Gift of Orzhova, Doom Blade, Orzhov Charm and Archangel of Thune will trigger Tablet of the Guilds ability. Its why I picked it over Soulmender. I like Soulmender's 1 cost vs Tablets 2 cost. Oddly about an hour ago I was contemplating the change. I'll play test both. Soulmender might be better as it would trigger Archangel of Thunes ability every turn.

I love Desecration Demon. He's cheap for the horror he would inflict. Basically a turn four 6/6 creature that I could make bigger quickly by Archangel's ability while sending a tithe drinker to the graveyard in a turn he could become an 8/8. With Soulmender I could make him bigger quicker. The thought oddly would be, if with soulmender, Desecration demon (turn 4), Archangel of Thune (turn 5), tap soulmender Archangel and desecration demon get +1/+1 turn 6 gift of orzhova to desecration demon. By turn 7 he'd be a nightmare. Either thered have to be a sacrafice made to tap him, which would make him stronger, that's his catch. One card been thinking of is Lord of the Void. By turn 7 I could cause target player to burn 7 cards off his library pick a creature of his for my control. I'd remove Desecration Demon for him. The way I'd play Desecration Demon it wouldn't be until turn 7 for the final outcome.

also in the thought is Angelic Skirmisher a 4WW angel which will grant "Flying At the beginning of each combat, choose first strike, vigilance, or lifelink. Creatures you control gain that ability until end of turn."
and Angel of Serenity a 4WWW angel with "Flying When Angel of Serenity enters the battlefield, you may exile up to three other target creatures from the battlefield and/or creature cards from graveyards. When Angel of Serenity leaves the battlefield, return the exiled cards to their owners' hands."

Angelic Skirmisher might be a better fit for this deck as I can give vigilance to everyone.

but again soulmender would be the better buff over tablet of the guilds.

those are my thoughts and where I am at right now. You're right about mutavault. He is a hindrance in this deck. I'd really hate to wait a full turn until being able to get mana from a gate but it would be quicker in the long wrong. After work I'll play test with soulmender and orzhov gate in.

lemme know what you think about the other choices to replace desecration demon?

I believe you did misunderstand Mutavault's ability. It becomes a 2/2 creature with all creature TYPES. So Mutavault will benefit from cards like Diregraf Captain and Stromkirk Captain. They give creatures that share their creature type (Being vampire and zombie) certain abilities or stat boosts. Having all creature types makes Mutavault a zombie, vampire, human, angel, demon, dragon and anything else you can imagine. But unless you have a card on the battlefield that effects a creature type, then he is just a 2/2.

Angelic Skirmisher is a great card! She can give you what you need for each situation. Angel of Serenity is awesome, but her mana cost is so high i'm not sure if you'll ever be able to play her. I looked over your deck again and noticed that a lot of your cards have a small power/toughness, but that is the way of creatures who have extort. Since you have only a few powerhouse cards (i.e. Desecration Demon and Archangel of Thune) i would say that Desecration Demon will actually work fine in this deck.

Good call on removing mutavault. The best deck for him is a sliver deck. That being said, Blind Obedience is the best extort card available. Sphere of Safety would also be a solid add for this deck. Also, Strionic Resonator can copy Archangel's ability, giving all your creatures +2/+2 for 2 mana. Path of Bravery and Angelic Accord would also rock in this deck.

Sphere of Safety? He doesn't really have enough enchantments to make goof use of that... Blind Obedience is pretty awesome, though. Path of Bravery could be good as well, but i don't think Strionic Resonator is a good idea. I think it would just be unneeded overkill, and a dead card if you don't have an Archangel of Thune out.

Sphere of safety is good in the sideboard, if nothing else. If you play it, your opponent has to pay at least one mana for each creature, which limits options until late game. Also, the resonator can copy extort on any card, as well as High Priest of Penance's ability, letting you destroy two permanents for just 2 mana.

I feel that Sphere of Safety is too expensive to just make an opponent pay one mana. I wasn't thinking about Strionic Resonator working High Priest of Penance, but its useless with extort. It would only copy the extort of one card, and it would cost you two mana to activate it. It would be way more efficient to just activate your extorting cards twice more with that two mana.

Good point. I forgot extort can be used as much as you want. Maybe leave out the Resonator. I still hold that Sphere of safety is a good card though, because it is one mana per creature trying to attack you. If you get out even one Gift of Orzhova, it becomes two mana per creature. And if you add in Path of Bravery, you start to get enough enchantments to give you some serious control over the battlefield. Plus, I like to run more than one, since the ability does stack. Like I said, it would be best to sideboard it in against a creature heavy deck as a saving grace.

When I was first constructing this deck Path of bravery was in it. Mainly for its gain 1 life for each attacking creature. Blind obedience is a card in considering adding in and possibly the path of bravery as well. Sphere of safety would make a better addition to my sideboard, I never thought of adding it in, thank you. Just one thing that makes me wonder with it is its cost. Its expensive. Angelic skirmisher is a card in still highly considering. I'd remove the desecration demon for her. But again desecration demons cost is 4 and I can make him mean quickly. By later tonight I should have it figured out. I may even add Angelic Skirmisher to my sideboard. Path of bravey I may add in by making this deck a 64 card mainboard. I try to not do that but I may have to.

You have enough low cost creatures that you may never have to put out Archangel, so if you want path of bravery, I would replace mutavault with it.

I'm going to be changing mutavault with orzhov guildgate. Considering removing 2 archangels and either a fiendslayer or life bane for 3 path of bravery. Also looking at underworld connections for card draw to speed up the deck. But I don't know yet. There's also Solemn Offering I completely forgot about. It could be a nuisance with this deck as to could be underworld connections. And I'm really liking rest in peace for this deck as a possible sideboard in this deck.

Adding in another desecration demon and 3 path of bravery sped up the deck considerably. Didnt think it would as much as it did in play testing. I am a little flooded out in mana sometimes. about 1 out of 3 shuffles i wind up flooded out. With the play testing, its a win everytime with path of bravery, archangel, soulmender, that happens to pop up by turn 7. still looking at making it a 60 card mainboard. could remove a plains a swamp, tithe drinker and desecration demon. maybe remove plains a swamp and two desecration demon?

That why I said take out the mutavault, you really don't need more than 20 mana in a deck that will wind up being this fast. Honestly, Guildgates would slow it down since there is no way for them to enter untapped.

The land count is really up to the creator and their personal taste, but if you do think you could stand to remove a few that is a really good place to start.

The choice between Angelic Skirmisher and Desecration Demon is really up to you. Giving all your little guys first strike could help keep them alive, and lifelink will make Archangel of Thune trigger like crazy. Desecration Demon can come out earlier, is larger and helps with an entirely different things. Desecration Demon helps with removal, but that's only if you opponent want it to. If they don't, they get their faces smashed in by a 6/6 flyer.

I'm going to remove Orzhov Guildgate and see how the deck handles 20 land. It'll probably be faster for sure. And with Angelic Skirmisher, I won't add her in. Path of Bravery (for gaining 1 life for each attacking creature), Gift of Orzhova (for giving flying and life link), would make Angelic Skirmisher slow this deck down. I could (thinking it could work), remove Soulmender and add in Angelic Accord. It'll trigger Path of Bravery, causing more life, causing more 4/4 angel drops, more life. A good cycle? I know Archangel would own with it.

I woudn't take out the Soulmenders. They are your only one drops and trigger archangel's ability before you attack, up to three times in one turn. I would take out one Paladin, and 2 Lifebane Zombies if it were my deck.

Honestly, i'm not sure if Angelic Accord is good for this deck. I'm not saying it's bad, i just want to make sure that you can gain four life each turn to use it properly. It's another high mana costing card and would be almost dead if you can't gain that four life. If you have Archangel of Thune out then it's great, but relying on her too much will make this deck unreliable. However if you do gain a solid four life almost every turn then go for it! If you do add Angelic Accord, i would take out one Desecration Demon, one Fiendslayer Paladin and one Lifebane zombie. The reason i suggest you take out one Desecration Demon is because he is mainly just a big bomb in this deck, but so is Angelic Accord. Having 12 different big bomb cards in a deck is too many, but 10 will be a little more manageable.

Angelic accord, while play testing crippled this deck so not keeping her in. Blind obedience went really well. I removed 1 lifebane zombie 1 desecration demon and a fiendslayer paladin for 3 blind obedience. (that's also with the 4 orzhov guildgate removed). That setup worked insane. Faster over all. I may change which cards are removed but blind obedience I may side board, its good for big creature decks.

Since Archangel's ability triggers for each instance of life-gain, in theory by turn five I could achieve 3 +1/+1 counters on each creature I control. By turn 6 or even 7 I could by as much as 6-8 +1/+1 counters figuring path of bravery triggering as well for +1/+1 and for attacking creature lifegain. Wich again has brought me angelic skirmisher :/

Isn't 6 to 8 +1/+1 counters enough? And as i said before, you don't want to make a deck that is too dependent on one card.

True true. Played against a few buddies decks. Archangel was becoming my most relied on card then life and zombie for peeks at his hand, then desecration demon. Viskopa guildmage oddly was my end game paying his second ability. Hopefully Theros has good cards I can play with.. My biggest problem was facing his mill deck. Hoping theros will solve that and bring in more lands other than Nykthos, shrine to Nyx. Erebos, god of the dead would murder this deck and any lifegain extort deck. Hopefully I could counter her. She's gonna be in sideboard for sure!

If you have trouble with mill, sideboard in some Witchbane Orbs. Watch the look of disgust on your friend's face when he can only mill himself.

That'd work until the 27th. I do have three in a modern deck in building. I'm hoping theros will have something similar.

that's the comment I'm referring to, it's what caused me to add it back in. Granted if DudeFace never mentioned it, it more than likely never would have come up. okay okay, how about 50/50?

Oh, and.. about Angel of Serenity, with Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx she would be come easy to play, same with Angelic Skirmisher. I'll proxy it with both, see how that outcome turns out.

Ok, haha! I'll accept a 50/50 credit. If you can add Angel of Serenity after Theros comes out that's be great! But adding in Angel of Serenity and Angelic Skirmisher might hurt the mana curve.
