Do you mean akroan crusader? He certainly would fit the token theme better.

Definitely make room for elixer of immortality.

If you're going to go b/w then the only commander option I see here is Athreos, who I think would be really cool with a bunch of sac effects and stuff like that.

You want cards that have definite, and immediate impact on the field. Unless you're meta is full of tokens, then cards like bile blight and illness in the ranks aren't that good. (And most people dont like it when you build just to hate on one particular deck) heroes downfall should move in, and doom blade isn't bad either.

I like cards like merciless executioner, as he helps me put creatures back into my graveyard just to pull out again.

To tell you what cards to pull out and swap in all depends on you. If you go two colors then obviously cards like lashwrithe and corrupt lose value immediately. If you do use Athreos as a commander then cards like Champion of Stray Souls gain value. You almost always want to maximize on your commander. Athreos has big potential. I actually really like the idea.

Just play it and figure out what works. Practice makes perfect!

Fog will always buy you more time, which control decks love.

Plow under is one of the best control spells in magic and should absolutely be in this list.

Pelakka Wurm is good here, or even Thragtusk. The etb/ltb will help smooth out your life total and help with card advantage.

No love for exploration or harmonize?

Personally, I would go for more of a turbofog/hippie deck and just deck my opponent but I still really like the idea behind this deck. Its out of the box and against the norm and all about screwin your opponents permanents lol.

If you had a deck description of what you wanted your deck to do, I could give you more targeted advice. Since I see a somewhat consistent theme of lifegain I will go with that, and I will keep budget in mind.

Soul Sisters. Soul Warden is a good card, and she has a sister named Soul Attendant or something very similar to that. They both do the same thing. Neat, huh? Run four of each and you're off to a good start.

Ajani's Pridemate. He gets bigger everytime you gain life and if you have two sisters out, he will trigger for each of them. That is to say, anytime a source you control causes you to gain life he will get a +1/+1 counter for each source.

Now, those three cards can be a real solid start to a good deck that anybody getting into magic should be able to afford and abtain quite easily. White has lots of cards that produce tokens (for the soul sisters) and gain life (for the pridemate)

Token cards: gather the townsfolk, raise the alarm, triplicate spirits, increasing devotion, blade splicee, captain of the watch

Life gaining: cathedral sanctifier, lone missionary, traveling missionaries, riot control, congregate, true conviction

And one of the best cards for this deck to protect your beloved army is brave the elements. Its fantastic. It gives all your white creaturws protection from the color of your choice until end of turn.

I hope this gave you some ideas and inspiration. Most of these cards are pretty cheap and you should be able to find and trade for them pretty easily.

Good luck!

In my experience running discard you either want to commit to nihil stone, affliction, or rack. I'm the biggest fan of nihil stone. Sure, it needs quest counters so you can't surprise your opponent like you can with affliction and drop three of them in one turn when their hand is empty but the five life is great. Running all three of these conditions just feels like too much. Drawing into these without ways to make them effective is just devastating.

Where are your one drop discards? Inquisition, duress, thoughtsieze, despise? Knowing what your up against and anticipating the next moves are crucial. Why waste a lightning bolt or terminate on a creature when you can just dispose of it turn one without ever having to think twice about what mana you should be leaving open later.

Blazing Specter has haste ;)

Liliana's caress? Pretty nasty whenever you unload a return and you get an extra two damage for each card they drop.

Liliana's reaver? Forces a discard or a block and even if they are empty handed you STILL get a zombie.

Liliana? Lol.

I understand im throwing a lot of heavy black options out there but thats just where the best discard support is. Don't gete wrong, I LOVE splashing red for blightning, terminate, and return.

Just some suggestions from my own experiences, I hope you dig it man! Like the deck!

Also, sanguine bond, and another five drop black enchantment whose name eludes me combo off.

The orzhov guildmage would also be good for you. And since gaining life is your goal, cards like congregate, riot control, and war report will net you huge results in a big edh game.

So you purchased the black commander and now you're thinking, now what? Lol. That's alright.

I'm also using the base of this deck for my commander so I can tell you what I've done with mine.

First, I switched my commander to Gisa. I'm just in love with her ability. Necromancy is my favorite playstyle in magic. I put in a lot of creatures with etb/ltb effects like solemn simulacrum and shadowborn demon and put in a lot of ways to reanimate them and bounce them. Rise from the grave, whip of erebos, rise of the dark realms. I keep my opponents shut out with an army of 2/2 zombies and pick off threats with removal and sweepers. Heroes downfall, malicious affliction (I looooooove it), and mutilate.

Basically just decide what you want to do and focus on it. You want to leech your opponents? Then some orzhov commander would certinly be best for you. Ghost Council might be the best. Cards like exanguinate, blood tithe, debt to deathless, and gary are your best friends. Extort stuff would be sweet, and blind obedience is a good candidate. Also, unmake would be one of your better removal cards.

Don't be afraid to have fun with it. EDH is meant to be full of shennanigans so just goof around with different cards and see how they interact.

Very nice outlining the difference between mid range and aggro. It's a gray area that a lot of players don't seem to grasp.

What I would like to see would be an article as to what makes a card good, and a card bad. I played against a kid who was running four meditation puzzles and I was running a UB. He laughed hysterically as I let his life climb to over thirty while I fended him off at ten, and then chewed at him with a Stormtide Leviathon.

See what I'm trying to say?

Also, why Sarkhan over Elspeth here? I would think she would be worth at least one slot mb

I saw a guy run a "lost in the woods" deck with 59 forests. He was miserable by the end of the night.

Satyr hoplite would be huge in this deck.

So would any of the other r/w cheap heroic dudes.

Its a deck centered around broodkeeper. Broodkeeper is never going to see play at a Grand Prix. What this deck is going to do is fill your mom's kitchen table with a bunch of little 2/2 fire breathing fliers.

Sure, it dies to removal and one infest will ruin your day, but you get to tap mana, bounce your cards, make an army, and most importantly have some fun with your friends with some cards you dont normally use.

The phrases "casual" "budget" "just for fun" come to mind.

I remember when I used to play Magic for fun. Things were simpler then.

Some other options to think about are inquisition of kozilek, and wrench mind. Both are great discard spells.

Ive used liliana's caress + painful quandary to effectively lock out my opponent from playing spells.

Also, im not entirely sure on your meta or modern in general but some sweepers will take you a long way like mutilate and the new krux of fate or something.

Ive also seen a lot of people use victim of night in place of doom blade, and dismember can really pinch some turds off.

Another card that I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE is smallpox.

Just spitballin ideas, nice deck bro!

Oh, and swap cremate for surgical extraction.

I like it, but even though you're only running one waste not I don't think there's enough consistent support to make it viable. Maybe if you cut two Sorin for a pair of mind rot?

I think what would be a better idea would be to cut the waste not for Elspeth, suns champion. Token queen right there.

Cathar's Crusade cost five, but has the potential to make your army MASSIVE especially once you start rolling with a mentor of the meek.

Also, im not sure how the rulings still work but you if your exile creatures use a delayed trigger then run cloudshift and keep breaking balls.

Bro, +7 life and +7 cards in a control deck that late in the game is oftentimes the extra gas you need to squeeze a win. His ultimates in this deck could very often look like drawsevengainseven lilly, palace siege, gary. Boom.

Or a big fat leech in the mix.

But ALWAYS a new hand full of removal, and a comfy new life total.
