Deck discussion for coming in

I've seen Fieldmist Borderpost in a few decks, and I think there's something I must be missing. If you vanilla cast it for 3 mana, it comes into play tapped and can be tapped for W or U. I'm guessing you plan to alt-cast it, so it will cost 1 to cast, but kick a land to your hand (though it can be a tapped land) and it still comes into play tapped.

Azorius Signet on the other hand costs 2 to cast, but it can be tapped the turn it comes into play (provided you have one free mana). It also doesn't kick a land to your hand.

I'm just not seeing situations where I'd rather have the former than the latter.

Right, but how is that better?

In a perfect world, T1 you drop a land, tap for 1, kick it to your hand, and play FB. T2 you play a land, and now have access to two mana. T3 you play another land and have access to 3 mana.

vs.

T1 you drop a land and can play something with it, T2 you drop a land and play a Azorius Signet, and have access to 1 mana, T3 you drop a land and now have access to 4 mana.

In a best case opening hand scenario Fieldmist Borderpost gives you an advantage of 1 mana on T2 at the cost of having 1 less in T1 and 1 less in every turn from 3 onward.

And that's just with a Signet; Sol Ring is going to be an infinitely better choice than either, and if you have room to run both Sol Ring combos better with a Signet because you can T1 land->Sol Ring->Signet giving you five mana on T2.

I actually run Borderposts in a couple of decks and like them, but I run them in decks that also have Sol Ring, Signets, Talismans, Medallions, Monoliths, Thran Dynamo, and in some cases Worn Powerstone. It's a good artifact, but it's not one that when faced with a choice becomes my number 1 choice. Clearly it is for some people though, and I'm curious because I personally can't find the math to support it.
