Deck Description

Hello! This is the first ever standard deck that I have constructed. It is also the first ever deck outside of the origins prerelease that I have built by myself. Suggestions are very welcome! Hope you'll find something worthwhile in there.

How to Play

Newer version: No dragons, too slow. MOAR EARLY AND MIDRANGE!

New version: A tried and true thopter deck, with a hint of dragons. Thank you all for the help!

Old Version: The idea is pretty basic: Survive long enough to turn your Thopters into Dragons!

Deck discussion for My First Standard Deck

Evolving wilds is a good card... in limited (draft/prerelease). Outside those formats, it has much better counterparts. Shivan Reef, Temple of Epiphany, or even Swiftwater Cliffs. Because when you use Evolving Wilds, yes, it allows you to fix your land, but it comes in tapped, when you can use a dual land that provides BOTH land types.

Otherwise, the deck looks solid for a first time. Only suggestion (other than the lands) I may have, is if you are relying on Descent of Dragons for a win condition, you should probably run 4 of them. ?

Thank you so much for taking time with my deck! And thank you so much for your insight, getting rid of evolving wilds next and adding another Descent. We'll see how it'll do at the store next week, thank you!

for a deck with 4 cards that have a converted mana cost of 6 and the bulk of your spells being at 2 or 4 cmc, I suggest getting more lands.

Drop 1 of Descent of the dragons and both sword of the animist. in their place get 3 lands. you dont need 4 copies of Descent of dragons, I see what youre trying to do but more often than not this deck wont have the mana and having 4 copies means you'll more often than not have a copy in your hand. for something that big you want to draw into it when u got your artifact thopter army in place, which im guessing is what youre going for.

theres no point having sword of the animist in your deck if youve only got 2 copies of it. More often than not you will never draw it and imhpov the card is more relevant early in the game.

If I were you I would sideboard all copies of Psychic Rebuttal. The card seems good but many times will just be left in your hand, because their aren't that many spells that will target you, unless you are going up against a burn deck or some sort of deck like that. What I would put in place, I'm not really sure. Besides that though seems pretty solid. Blue/Red is my favorite color combo.

Not bad for a starter. Fun synergy !

I hope you have same fun in the future ! :)

I'd say drop two of your Descent of the Dragons and add two Dragon Tempest. Gives your thopters haste, when they enter, also you could do some serious damage sacking the thopters to make dragons. Also, maybe impact tremors?

Yah, Dragon tempest would be good here.
Maybe you could cut blue entirely and use pia+kiran for more thopters, and then pack some more burn

I must disagree with cutting blue because thopter spy network is the glue of the thopter deck. It's probably the best card in the deck.

I feel like this deck is good but lacks an identity, as in what do want the deck to accomplish in general. Is it going to be aggro thopter? or that being more midrange? Or are you looking to control tempo/ priority.

I think if you go the thopter route you just want enablers that help the cause of overloading a board, like pia and kiran, a play set of rogues and engineer plus gearcrafters are all good thopter enablers. Disciple as good as she is, is very clunky without having the deck built around her(play tested her) and you can find better, more smoother fits to whatever identity you choose.

The second is land count, 24 is the number to aim for, especially if your curve is over 4 cmc in multiples. Maybe running one copy of descent is ok, since it is a big win-con if resolved, but 4 isn't good, which hence can go to lands.

so here is a mini example of:

4x whirler rogue
4x thopter engineer
3x pia and kalan(legendary rule for not running 4x)
4x hangarback walker

this with spy network will probably make your deck pretty thopter-esp.

You should add darksteel citadel to set off the spy network.

0
Posted 22 July 2015 at 22:08

I was hoping that the other thopters were going to trigger the spy network, is that too flimsy of a trigger tho?

0
Posted 23 July 2015 at 07:20

No, the thopters will trigger, but Darksteel citadel gives you another way to trigger it. Id add in the citadels tbh

Nice job it looks really good

Oh my only suggestion would be Purphoros, God of the forge. Let your little guys still be heavy hitters even without haste and then buff them next turn

1
Posted 22 July 2015 at 22:53

I agree. I would also like to say that you should have a bit more burn and have a very controlling element in this type of deck. Purphoros will also increase your aggro. And I am now basing a deck around that sort of idea.....

That's cool

I was contemplating it, but since he's out of standard pretty soon (and I hope to keep this deck for a while) I decided against it. I dunno, it is really cool tho... hmm...

If purphoros is too expensive and you are worried about rotation I would consider impact tremors as a budget replacement that will not be rotating any time soon :)

That's a really cool idea! I might end up switching out the fiery impulses for it! I still wanna play with the deck as-is a little longer to get a feel for it, but that is a great suggestion!

Hello everyone! Thank you all so much for all of your replies and encouragement! I will admit that I didn't expect all of this support and that I am a little overwhelmed by all of the suggestions, but please, keep the suggestions coming! I'm trying to slim it out over the next few days and will be getting some playtime with the deck to better figure out what works for me and what doesn't.
Again, thank you all so much!

Add 3-4 Artificier's Epiphany, it's instant speed Divination.

If you're dedicated to red than you should be including Fiery Conclusion or Shrapnel Blast.

The deck needs both better mana and Darksteel Citadel ( I know, counterintuitive.) Grab 4 Swiftwater Cliffs and the 4th Shivan Reef. If you can afford it, pick up some Temples of Epiphany.

4 Negates is at least 2 too many.

Sidisi's Faithful, Turn to Frog, and Descent of Dragons are not really worth including.

The ornithopter that isn't in the deck. Then you can shrapnel blast it later.

Another wincon with Descent. If you're going to have Thopthers everywhere might as well use it.

0
Posted 28 July 2015 at 17:02

You can still turn 1/1 Thopter with flying into a 5/5 with flying for 2 mana. Just because the Ensoul Ornithopter is an oversued combo doesn't mean you limit to just that combo

0

u can also ensoul darksteel citadel, aye?

True......
But an imdestructible land is best left making mana

0

Or now you have an indestructible 5/5 creature that could still tap for a land if needed?

Interesting deck, I have never seen anything like this before.

One small suggestion though:

Add at least two or three draw card spells (steam augury?) in place of some of the burn. You can set up some neat combos but you need the cards to take you there.

Sweet deck.

You should almost never play a card that gives your opponent a choice. Unless they have to choose which of their stuff to lose

If the name is wrong, it's an instant speed Divination that you have discard if you don't have an artifact

I really like the fact of tribal thopters. My friends didn't listen to me when I told them about it. Why not try to get 2-4 Obelisk of Urds and 4 Ornithopters?
Oh! I could use some help making a standard goblins deck. Please see what decks I have to offer!
