Deck Description

Dating myself a bit here, but my best days of Magic were when th crw of the Weatherlight were still discovering the Plane of Rath. I always loved the storyline back then, and it raly drew me into the game. By far my favorite villian back then was Volrath.

Unfortunately our time ith Volrath was limited. Spoilers alert, he dies in a not so wonderful fashion at the end of my favorite Magic novel, Nemisis. Ever since coming back to the game a year ago and discovering the Commander format, I wanted to build a deck around Volrath, heck it seemed like a ludicrous idea that more decks were not built around him.

However, the format does not really lend itself to a one hit wonder. Volrath is susceptible to the infinite board clears, bounce spells, token blockers, etc... that exist to prevent that massive crush from a commander.

But you know what, to hell with that, Volrath was never meant to rule the multiverse. As long as he takes down a couple heroes on his way down, he served his ultimate purpose. So here it is, Volrath, the one hit wonder.

How to Play

This deck reads as though it has 26 creatures, but in reality it has 26 instant spells that should read:

Cost: B1, Text: Volrath gets +x/+x here X is the converted casting cost of this card if you decided to make it a creature.

Add in some graveyard to hand goodness, some mana ramp, and a bunch of protection equipment for our not long for this world Evincar, and you have the making for the deck that will cheese at least one player off before you are eliminated faster than a Mogg deck hand aboard the Predator.

Deck discussion for Volrath, 1 Hit Wonder of Rath

It's funny how things work out, I am currently on the hunt for volrath and was before you posted this deck. Later today I plan on posting a new deck that is lacking volrath but if he were in it the deck would be more complete. I will leave a better comment about this deck later today as well, right now I have to run errands/do chores but be looking for something on here from me before midnight.

So I have taken a better look at the deck and I must say good job. Earlier I walked away from the computer thinking why doesn't he add some bring back into play from the graveyard cards but I got to thinking about it and it hit me duh, he wants it in his hand so he can wash, rinse and repeat. Now I am going to have to look for yet another card, the embrace. Since you are using a good amount of demons I would say you could also use cover of darkness and if you have a space for another a card you know I love is conspiracy. And if all creatures are unblockable or if volrath is the only one that would ever be attacking then find a way to add poison to make the kill even quicker. I am going to have to do some serious work to get a volrath but this deck really has me wanting one now.

Once again you have inspired me to build a deck I might not have ever thought of on my own.

Thanks for the praise. And absolutely I had originally put in "return card to play" effects in the deck, and had the same realization - "what good is it there?"

And glistening oil, grafted exoskeleton, and phyresis are good infect adding cards. that would make it much easier to make Volrath a one shot killing machine.

I had not even really considered the fact that a lot of these guys were demons. I may take a peak at the tribal implications.

Woooooottttt, I just got a copy of volrath. Now I owe my friend because he gave it to me before he went out of town and said we can settle up when he gets back. Now my playgroup and you will be looking for a deck with volrath as the general and I will have it built very soon.

I am in the beginning stages of looking at cards that could go in a deck similar to this and I have run across one that I am not sure about. The one I might add is Darksteel colossus but I am wondering why you are not using it. Does it's when hits grave effect not work with volrath? Or is there another reason you decided not to run it, you might have found some thing better to fill the slot. Either way let me know what you were thinking.

No good reason. They were originally (bloghtsteel and darksteel), and make perfect sense, but in the end, they drew the short straw and got taken out. It that betrays was another one that could easily get slipped back into the deck. No really good reason, their lack of going to the graveyard was a factor, but not a huge one. That was my because my return to hand spells would not work on them, and sometimes I'll want to use a fatty twice. (Discard Draco to Volrath, return to my hand with disturbed burial, discard him again... Hahaha.)

Yeah after thinking about both of the cards you listed above (about 30 minutes time) I realized that both cards are for the most part one shots. I keep forgetting about what this deck is supposed to do, I need to start reading old comments before leaving new ones.
